Orville Harrold, who will appear in concert at the Gennett On Thursday evening, Sept. 12th, as "Romeo, one of his moat successful grand opera roles.
The Theaters The Murray. Minstrelsy has always been popular and always will be. For it appeals to a variety of tastes and is frankly what it is with no pretense of being something, theatrically, that it has never aspired to be. Hence the minstrel show still lives, although modified by the prevailing tendency for vaudeville and theatrics "in the little," if it could so be put. The annual engagement of Gua Son's Minstrels at the Murray, therefore, is an interesting one for the patrons of that theatre, who received them with demonstrations of approval. This t aggregation of singera and comedians is modeled on the vaudeville plan. Not entirely on that of the old time minstrel company, although the performance is divided into the time hon ored first part and olio. The song numbers of a minstrel show are always one of its attractions and in this it did not fail yesterday, "Take Me Back to Dreamland," by Earl Dodds, "The Nightingale Yodell," by Justin McCarthy and a quartette in "The Rosary," being especially good for the sentimental, while Tom Powell's "Rag Time Soldier Man," was funny enough. Powell, in fact, is an excellent comedian of this class and was extremely diverting in his single appearance. The bass soloist in that part of the program put down as "The Singing Five," who played his piano accom paniment, sang with effect. The travesty on a village band which closed the first part was highly amusing and Jimmie Wall as the other "end man" showed himself a versatile comedian in both his talking and song numbers. Altogether the performance was entertaining throughout. E. G. V. ANCIENT ARITHMETIC Problems Schoolboys Had to Solve Thirty-six Centuries Ago. There Is a ray of vindictive comfort for the modern schoolboy in the fact that for over 3.600 years his schoolboy progenitors have been worried by Just such problems In arithmetic as annoy him most Among the archaeological discoveries made in Egypt is a papyrus roll, in excellent condition, dating from about 1700 B. C. This roll, which had a long heading beginning. ' Directions how to -attain the knowledge of all dark things," proves beyond doubt that the Egyptians of that time had a thorough knowledge of the elements of arithmetic. Numerous examples show that their principal operations with units and fractions were made by means of addition and multiplication. Subtraction and division were not known in their present form, but correct results were obtained nevertheless. Equations are also found in the papyrus. Here is one that brings the Egyptian schoolboy home to us: Ten measures of barley are to be divided among ten persons in such manner that each subsequent person shall receive one-eighth less than the one before him. Another example given is: There are seven men; each one has seven cats; each cat has eaten seven mice; each mouse has eaten seven grains of barley; each grain of barley would have yielded seven measures of barley. How much barley has been lost? The papyrus also contains the calculation of the area of a circle, attempts to square the circle and finally calcula tions of t!ss nblc mensr.rptnents of Iyrucii.-.- .v Yirk Triluiuuk A Mistake. "The Yankee Girl." Charles J. Winninger, the principal comedian supporting Julie "Ring in the big musical comedy, "The Yankee Girl," is a product of the middle West, born in Warsau, Wis. He made his first appearance upon the stage in Milwaukee at the early age of seven. Mr. Winninger is the youngest - of live brothers, all of whom are prominent in theatricals. Success crowned the efforts of this naturally funny comedian from the very start and at the present time he stands in the front rank of America's select entertainers. For the past five years he has been almost continually employed in big Broadway musical comedy successes in the New York theatres and the demand for his services is. such that he seldom appears away from the great metropolis. Mr. Winninger is a comedian of the new school his methods of creating fun are original and up to date; he is distinctly an entertainer of the most advanced type and there is no suggestion of the buffoon in any part of his performance.
