Work at Night, i It is a great thing to learn to shut off the mental steam when you quit i work, says Orison Swett Murden in j Success Magazine. What would you think of a factory manager who would leave all of his power turned on after the operators bad left the factory, the ; delicate machinery running everyj where, pounding itself to pieces, grinding out Its delicate bearings without 1 producing anything? Many of us do not turn off our mental power after ;we are through producing or creating ' for the day. And Many Are the Voices of Richmond People. Thirty thousand voices What a grand chorus! And that's the number of American men and women who are publicly praising Doan's Kidney Pills for relief from backache, kidney and bladder ills. They say it to friends. They tell it in the home papers. Richmond people are in this chorus. Here's a Richmond case. John Goins, blacksmith, 1326 North G street, Richmond, Ind., says: "I have found that Doan's Kidney Pills live up to the claims made for them. The action of my kidneys was irregular. When I stooped I had sharp, twinges in the small of my back. Reading about Doan's Kidney Pills, I began using them and my trouble soon disappeared." Mr. Coins is only one of many Richmond people who have gratefully endorsed Doan's Kidney Pills. If your back aches if your kidneys bother you, don't simply ask for a kidney remedy ask distinctly for Doan's Kidney Pills, the same that Mr. Goins had the remedy backed by home testimony. 50c, all stores. The city of Gloucester, in England, annually presents the king with a pie. Almost from time immemorial Gloucester until the year 1834 followed the custom of expressing its loyalty to the throne by sending to the sovereign a lamprey pie. In 1834 the custom was suspended, but it was revived in 1893 and has since continued. It was felt that the 3 ear of the dlamo'nd jubilee required some special effort, and therefore the 1897 pie, which was in May dispatched to Balmoral upon a gold dish, was of a more than usually elaborate character. This pie weighed twenty pounds and was adorned with truffles, fine prawns on gold skewers and aspic Jelly. On the top was a representation of the royal crown and cushion, with a scepter to which were attached streamers of royal blue, and at the base were four golden lioire. By the survival of an ancient custom the town of Yarmouth is bound to furnish to the sheriffs of Norwich annually a hundred herrings baked in twenty-four pies, which are then sent to the lord of the manor of East Clareton, who conveys them to the king. Harper's Weekly. The Transformation of Porcy. His name was Johnny, and his ambition was to be grown up. He had watched Cissy and Percy, but that's another storiette, as Kipling says. "Papa," he piped as he walked with his dad on the beach, "what's under those rocks?" "Limpets!" snapped papa. This was not the first question. "Wouldn't they rather walk about, pa?" "No!" rapped out pa. "They prefer to cling where they are!" "Is everything that likes clinging to something else a limpet, pa?" "For goodness yes!" roared father. Johnny thought. "Well, na," he concluded, "Is Percy a limpet, pa, when he says goodby to Cissy in the passage?" London Answers. Thers Was a Coolnoss. Aug. 30, 31 Special Motion Pictures. The Murray. For Saturday of this week Manager Murray has secured for the Murray Theatre one of the best feature films ever produced, a film which has broken all records wherever used, and which will no doubt be appreciated by the Richmond patrons: The name of the picture is the "Redemption," in three reels and full of interest. The story deals with a beautiful young girl who has fallen from the straight and narrow path and who at last is redeemed by the loving kindness of a Sister of Charity, afterwards becoming a nurse, and at last, when the plague strikes the city, nursing the victims and giving up her own life in nursing the Sister Superior who had saved her from herself. She dies surrounded by those who love her, and, too late, she is decorated by the Cross of the Legion of Honor, whish has been conferred upon her for her remarkable work during the ravages of the plague. Today the feature film "The Glass Coffin" is being shown. No Heat Prostrations Here. An opportunity to escape the broiling sun and flee, in fancy, to the frigid regions, the land of the midnight sun,, is offered by the management of the Gennett Theater next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The Carnegie-Alaska-Siberia motion pictures taken by Capt. Kleinschmidt while hunting for game in the far north will be displayed. There will be the Eskimos at work and at play, harpooning the walrus, stalking the polar bear and indulging in their favorite pastimes. A moose hunt in Alaska, in which the huge beast is shown wounded and at bay is one of the thrilling scenes. There will be herds of mountain goats, mamalukes harnessed to plows, primitive railroading in Alaska and the totom poles of the Indians in weird and fantastic designs. In addition to the pictures on land, an island in the Bering Sea, with walls hundreds of 'feet high, upon which the huts of the Eskimos are perched in sheltered nooks, will be shown. Black Patti. The Black Patti Musical Comedy company will be at the Gennett next week. They have played to opera house audiences in most all the playable cities and towns in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe, and now this is the fifteenth season or trans-American tour. The Black Patti Musical Comedy company is the most exclusive and famous of all Afro-American organizations in the amusement world. Mme. Sissieretta Jones, the diva of her race unequaled, who has sung before all the crowned heads of Europe, and whose unquestioned art and beautiful voice has won for her a unique place in the world of song, has surrounded herself with a troupe of sweet-voiced singers of her race darkey comedians with the gift of fun inborn, all contributing to a program of extraordinary variety. They will appear at the Gennett Saturday, September 7, matinee and night, in the new musical comedy, "Captain Jasper." Visiting Cards For Young Women. The cardboard now in use is of medium thickness. The very thin cards popular a little while ago bad the advantage of taking up very little room in the cardcase and of weighing very little, but they were too easily bent. Old English type and block letters are fashionable at the present moment. Script Is now and always in good taste. Many people prefer it because it is simple and unostentatious and never goes out of fashion. Old English is by far the most ex pensive style in the beginning, as complicated letters take more time to engrave than plain ones. Some sta tioners charge three times as much for It as for script, block type costing twice as much as the last named. The let tering should be of medium size, nei ther very large nor very small. The card of a young single woman is smaller than that of a married woman and nearly square. Reservoir Osprrteht, Wit, National Highly Prized and Carefully Pretoetsd by Martial Law. Major is the name of the chief of the highly prized and carefully protected tribe of Barbary apes that inhabit the rock of Gibraltar. Theje is a saying in the fortress to the effect that it were "better to kill the governor than Major." There are only about twenty left of this band of monkeys, which in some mysterious manner came over from Africa many years ago and claimed citizenship in Europe. They are protected by martial law, and any addition by birth to their number Is carefully chronicled and announced In the local paper. The apes change their place of residence from the highest peaks of the rock to lower and more sheltered portions and back again, according to the 6tate of the weather. They show their sense of humor by throwing stones at the soldiers, but they are often not seen for weeks at a time save in the early morning. A few years ago, on account of the diminishing numbers of these animals, some apes were procured from Barbary and turned loose upon the rock. But -resident monkeys killed them all. Although so fierce to intruders of their own kind, they never attack human beings and are greatly beloved and esteemed. New York Press. A Double Exit. Mr. Staylate The lamp is solus out. lAXEft FAMINE. Impulse That Moved the British Lan csrs at Aliwal. The Sixteenth lancers, than whom there is no more famous regiment in the British service, performed a flnt feat at the battle of Aliwal. In tb Tunjab, in January, The gallant Sikhs had thrown them selves into squares and in this formation for a time resisted the desperate charges of the English cavalry Just as stubbornly as the British infantry had resulted the- French curalselers at Waterloo. Again and again did the Sixteenth lancers strive to break through the masses of the Sikhs, and again and again scores of saddles were emptied, and the British were beaten back with slaughter. As the lancers got close enough to deliver their thrusts their weapons would splinter like matchwood upon the stout shields of their swarthy foes. Suddenly an inspiration came to the troopers. Without receiving any orders to that effect, but as if controlled by a unanimous impulse, they shifted their lances to the bridle band and charged in once more. The Sikhs, entirely unprepared for this sudden and masterly maneuver, received in their bodies instead of on their targets the speai points of the horsemen. Into and through the squares swept the Sixteenth, with lances as crimson as their tunics. Even so, It is recorded that the resistance was so desperate and sustained that the Sikh square had to be ridden through again and yet again before it was finally overcome. Exchange.
