Summer should be the period of perfect health, but impure water and imllk. unripe fruit, and the tendency to (indulge in acid foods and iced drinks, produces a contrary condition in many 'people. The effect of the average summer dlet is to constipate even normally -regular bowels, and this results In disarranging the entire digestive system. When the bowels are choked rwith the stomach's refuse, indigestion is almost sure to follow, and the waste jmatter that should pass out through jthe bowels, not finding passage, ferpments in the stomach and the poisons Are forced into the blood, causing much distress and often serious illness. , To xeep the bowels free, there is no more effective remedy 'than Dr. Caldywell's Syrup Pepsin. This is a pleasant-tasting bowel stimulent and laxative tonic that is very gentle in its oction, bringing relief in an easy, natural ananner, and without discomfort A poonful of Syrup Pepsin will quickly rheck summer diarrhoea by cleansing fthe bowels and removing the foreign natter that irritates and inflames the tissue. It is sold in drug stores for flfty cents a bottle; a large family size, jconsiderably more than twice the (quantity, costs a dollar. If you have hever used Syrup Pepsin and would lke a free trial bottle, postpaid, write to Dr. W. B. Caldwell. 406 Washington ktreet. Monticello, Illinois.

DISHONEST CASHIER Is Trapped by a Clever Advertisement.
(National News Association) NEW YORK, Aug. 23. Trapped by an advertisement after he had eluded capture for two years, John A. Flack, former cashier of the Abilene State Bank, of Abilene, Kansas, is a prisoner today in the Mulberry Street police station, pending the arrival of officers from Kansas who will take him back to face the charge of stealing $80,000. .Flack declared that he would not compel extradition, according to the police. Detective J. J. Allen, of the National Surety company, and A. M. Birdsall, manager of the claim branch of that company, rapped Flack at Third aveiue and Twelfth street by a carefully worded advertisement. Flack made no attempt to deny his identity. When Flack was taken to police headquarters, but three cents were found in his pocket. . Flack said he had been wandering over the country for two years working at whatever he could find and changing his name frequently. He spent the money which he is charged with embezzling in real estate speculation. He does not drink or smoke. KEEN SIGHTED GULLS. Teats That Proved the Wonderful Vision of the Birds. There is perbap no other bird of land or sea so keen of sight as the common gull. To convince a skeptical friend of this, an American naturalist once made some interesting experiments. The two men were passengers on a steamer where the spring ebb aided them to run twenty miles an hour. A dozen gulls followed them in the steamer's wake without apparent effort and circled In graceful curves over the water. Breaking a cracker biscuit Into fonr parts less than an Inch square each, the naturalist banded one piece to his friend and told him to drop it into the seething waters on the starboard. Immediately the bit of biscuit became invisible to human eyes, and yet before it bad gone thirty yards astern a gull detected it and. dipping into the foam, secured it. One by one It picked up the other bits of biscuit, though neither of the two men could see them. Tearing off a postage stamp from an old envelope, the naturalist dropped it overboard. The gull detected the waif and made as if to pick it up. But when within a yard or so of It the bird saw that It was nothing In his line and glided npward again to his favorite station on a line with the topmost truck. New York Tribune. Bizefs Rod Ribbon. Bizet, the author of the popular opera "Carmen. who died a month after its first production, was not at any time a lucky man. He was even decorated through a mistake, says a writer, "for bis friends, presaging the failure of 'Carmen,' bombarded the minister before the production and begged a decoration for M. George Bizet. 'Bizet?" asked the minister. 'Who Is Bizetr A remarkable genius.' was the reply, "who has already produced several extraordinarily fine works. Among them the most popular is perhaps "L'Arle-sienne.-' "L'Arlesienne ?" interrupted the minister. 'Why. it is a perfectly fascinating book. 1 read It with extreme pleasure. Tell your friends that the thing is done. The minister was not musical, but he had read a novel by Alphonse Daudet, and Bizet won his red ribbon." Real Chivalry. Men passengers in the old horse omnibuses of years ago had greater opportunities than at present of showing their politeness to women, especially on wet nights. One remembers the conductor's request as he swung his dripping form from the "monkey board to the doorway. "Will any gentleman ride outside to oblige a woman r And there was always the gentleman whose chivalry prompted him to give up his seat climb the steep steps to the "knife board" on top and complete his journey in the pouring rain. HOW. TO MAKE CANNA BEDS. Do Not Plant For Many Varieties or Colors. As cannas are subtropical plants they thrive only in warm weather and should be planted only when the season is well advanced. May 20 to June 15 is best for the territory between latitudes 40 and 45. The plants are deep rooted, therefore the bed should be dug deep. It also is important to provide pleuty of plant food. Three Inches of well rotted manure spaded into the soil is not too much. Do not elevate the center of the bed, but leave level so water will not run off. If the bed is to contain several varieties of caunas much care should be given to the selection of the varieties. If the bed Is to be viewed from all sides put the taller varieties in the center and use the shorter kinds for the border rows. Your florist can give advice about the varieties best suited for the purpose. Do not plant too many varieties. Unless it is an exceptionally large bed two or three will be better than more. For small beds a dozen to eighteen plants are enough. It is good taste to use some other plant for a border. If tall growing cannas are used the fountain grass is unsurpassed, and for dwarf kinds such plants as coleus, dwarf salvias and dusty miller are serviceable. How to Walk Correctly. To attain correct carriage one must walk erectly, and to achieve this there Is nothing better than trying to walk with a book or similar article on the head. This is sure to keep one from developing the swaying of the body more to the one side than the other. Stays that force the opposite of this rule should be discarded and destroyed, for they are not fit to wear. If they work against the erectness of the carriage they are really a menace to the health. Throw out your chest. Better to have people say that you are so straight you appear to be falling over backward than to be round shouldered in appearance, if not in fact. Feel My Iron Grip?
