ilGHT EXECUTIONS IN JUSTJOHE WEEK Iwholesale Electrocution Record to Be Established in New York. (National News Association) NEW YORK, Aug. 10 A record for j Wholesale official electrocution in New .York will have been estblished next jweek when E. F. Davis, of Corning, n. Y., the official executioner, snuffs tout the lives of eight murderers condemned to die by the New York courts. Besides these men there are eighteen additional murderers now in the death cells of Sing Sing, Auburn and Clinton prisons who must shortly pay the death penalty unless new trials are ordered by the highest court of the state. The eight doomed men all are guilty iof crimes which at the time of their j perpetration excited wide interest. (Five were implicated in the murder ! of Mrs. Henry Hall at Yorktown, West chester county, on November 9, 1911. They are Italians, who with robbery In view, entered her home in the ab- , sence of her husband. One stabbed I her to death as she was being held J by the others. The sixth member of (the gang, Santo Zanzo, has already I paid the death penalty, it having been (established that he actually did the i stabbing. He was executed on July !8 last. These are the Italians who will be strapped in the electric chair for the murder of Mrs. Hall: Lorenzo L. Call, Vincenzo Cona, Flipio de Marco, Salvajtore de Marco and Angel Guista. All jare in death cells at Sing Sing prison. The three men who complete the (list of doomed are, Joseph Ferrone, (also an Italian, who murdered his wife In New York city on October 24, last by cutting her throat; John W. Collins, a negro, who on July 1, 1911, shot and killed Policeman Thomas Lynch In New York, and John Matuszewski, a prisoner, who shot Policeman Charles Schaeffer of Buffalo, on September 11, last. According to officials of the state rprison department, little more than an hour will be necessary to execute seven of these men who are at Sing Sing prison. They will probably be killed on Monday. Karuszewski, who 'is awaiting his end at Auburn prison, jwill be executed on another day, as Electrician Davis, who alone arranges for and conducts the electrocution of Ithe murderers in New York state, will RECORD OF A GREAT MEDICINE (Doctors Could Not Help Mrs. Templeton Regained Health through Lydia E. Pinkham's Compound Hooper, Nebraska. "I am very glad to tell how Lydia E.Pinkham' Vegetable Compound haa helped me. By the time I had taken the .aeventh bottle mv health had returned and I began doing my washing and was a well woman. Atone time for three weeks !1 did all the work for eighteen boarders with no signs of my old trouble returning. Many have taken your medicine after seeing what it did for me. The proprietors have so much faith in its curative powers that they offer Onz Hundred Dollars for aiiy case that It fails to cure. Send for list of testimonials. Address F. J. The torpedo fish, known to scientists ss the Torpedo electricus, are the electric catfish of the Nile. They can give an electric shock similar to that of an electric Leyden jar. This is useful to the fish in stunning prey and in confounding their enemies. This shock, like any other electricity, may be conducted through a metallic substance and is often unpleasant, though not dangerous. It is conveyed through an iron spear or knife, so that the person holding either of these Implements may receive a shock when it comes in contact with the fish. St Nicholas. " The disease of chestnut trees now causing serious injury in the eastern states was first noticed about the year 1904 in the vicinity of New York, and is believed to be due to the growth of a hitherto unknown fungus described by Morrill in 1906 under the name of Dt&pertfc parasttca,
T. P. A. Notes BY W. H. Q. Are your dues paid? The committee on picnic is very busy, and a splendid time is promised every T. P. A. who will attend. Remember the date Saturday, August 17th; the place Glen Miller Park, and be there by 2:30 p. m. John A. Ratliff, of Pasadena, California, vice president of the Richmond Baking Co., will in the future be a citizen of Richmond, having accepted a position with this firm. J. E. Thatcher, prominent aomng T. P. A.'s as one of our most efficient "City Dads" and all around sport, went hunting last week up near Whitewater. Ed brought home squirrels, but it is reported that he had all of Franklin township after them. Gee, but those squirrels must have cost a "heap." Ed is a good old "gumshoe" hunter that gets the game. John Minnich is spending his "between seasons" in Richmond sometimes playing Rhum and some times looking on. John is a prepossessing, well groomed, well kept sample of bachelordom that is a mystery to some of his Benedict friends, who have not been so lucky. M. L. Hasty seems to have left his happy home and is now rooming at T. P. A. headquarters. May be our secretary won't pay his room rent at his old boarding house. Jim Lewis is very busy planning fishing trips for 1913. Any one interested should consult Jim as he is information headquarters. Among the doners to the Homer Wilson fund at Peoria, appears the names of Post C and J. E. Thatcher, of Richmond. This is certainly very commendable in our delegation and Mr. Thatcher in particular. This fund is a splendid proposition and many a widow or orphan may benefit by it. Copying from our friends, the U. C. T.'s, it can be said to be a "Ray of hope across a" dreary prospect" to those who have lost husband and father, who fortunately belonged to the T. P. A. We thing a meeting of the board of directors should be held. It won't be long "till the winter's activities will begin and perhaps there are several questions that should . be considered before hand. When the press commute is short of news biographical sketches will be written. This is 'done because we believe post mortem boquets are appreciated the more if given while the patient is still among us. BIOGRAPHICAL. John B. Hegger It can truly be said that the above subject of this sketch is inimitable. When this sample of his particular kind of humanity has "cashed in" there will probably never be another. He is a big kicker and at the same time easily pleased, a "big I" yet thinks nothing of his many achievements, a knocker from "Hammerville," yet the beet friend you could have; the laziest man in Richmond, yet always busy; a man who jaws and scolds, yet the best natured chap in town. This remarkable piece of humanity originated in Cincinnati about 60 years ago. He grew up in a fashion fitting to a mischevious German boy of that day and place. At 18 he began "peddlin " and kept at it steady for 25 years, during

For fifteen years he has sold fire insurance most successfully at the same time looking after his protege, Post C, as he is the acknowledged "Dad" of the Post. He is considered the most thoughtful and kind natured of Post C's members and no one is ever sick or confined at home by injury that Johnnie B is not calling around adding cheer and offering his and the Post's services in any way that will add cheer and comfort. Would that the world could have had more samples of this very remarkable combination of manhood before the molds were broken. We would not suffer in consequence thereof. May he have many more pleasant years of usefulness and cheer. Story of a Nail Keg. A hundred years ago Jeremiah Atwnter was a leading New Haven merchant, buying his supplies in Boston and receiving them by vessel. Among other goods received were several casks of nails, one of which on opening, it under a layer of nails at each end was found to be filled with silver dollars. Mr. Atwater. who was a conscientious man. immediately wrote to the Boston merchant that there must be some mistake In the invoice of nails, as one of the casks contained other articles besides nails. He was promptly informed that the nails were bought for nails, sold for nails and nails they must be. Forthwith Mr. Atwater bad a basin made of the silver and presented it to the Center church, where It has been used in the baptismal Service from that time to the present. Art and Nature. Art 1s the revelation of man, and not merely that, but likewise the revelation of nature speaking through man. Art pre-exists in nature, and nature is reproduced in art. As Tapors from the ocean floating landward and dissolved In rain are carried back in i rivers to the ocean, so thoughts and the semblances of things that fall upon the soul of man in showers flow oat again in living streams of art and lose themselves in the great ocean, which is nature. Art and nature are not, then, discordant, but ever harmoniously working in each other. Longfellow's "Hyperion."

Carrrtckt. 112. "CROSSING THE BAR." "It Came In a Moment,1 Said Tennyson ef His Great Song. Parallel to the thoughts on immortality and the hereafter as Dr. Lowry expressed them is Lord Alfred Tennyson's noble death song. "Crossing the Bar." One of the three-greatest death songs ever written, it comes to us as a sublime prayer, a bumble petition, a sacred belief of a great man. It was while crossing the Solent with bis son Dallam late one October's afternoon that the words came to the mind of the poet, who had just recovered from a siege of sickness. Reaching his home, be at once sat down and penned the lines. Showing the poem to his son. be declared. "It came in a moment.'' Three years after the birth of the lines Sir Alfred passed away, but the prayer he uttered on that memorable afternoon remains a fitting memorial not only to the English poet laureate, but to the memory of those who have gone before us and who helped to lay the foundation of our liberal faith and liberal education. In it are blended the unfaltering trust and belief of all humanity. The last lone man on this terrestrial sphere will utter no grander words when he sett sail to seas unknown than those dropped as faith's anchor by the silent man of the yester age: I hope to see my Pllo face to (ace When I have crossed the bar. "Songs Inspired by Sorrow." George Leon Varney. in National Magazine. A Wonderful Painting. In the WIertz gallery in Brussels is a wonderful painting, dating from the time of Waterloo, called "Napoleon In neil." It represents the great marshal with folded arms and face unmoved descending slowly -to the land of the shades. Before him. filling all the background of the picture with every expression of countenance, are the men sent before him by the unbridled ambition of Napoleon. Three millions and seventy thousand there were in all so history tells us more than half of them Frenchmen- They are not all shown in the picture. They are only hinted at And behind the millions shown or hinted at are the millions on millions of men who might have been and are not the huge widening wedge of the possible descendants of the men who fell in battle. France used up, during 1911, more than forty-six billions of matches. CHICHESTER 8 PILLS W-- THE DIAMOND BttAMk. JL 1 Ladles! Xatioaal 2ia AmocUVum Shakespeare as an Actor. About the year 1590 one of the London companies received an addition in the person of a young man who was not only a skillful and useful actor, but who also possessed the accomplishment of being able to adapt older plays to the taste of the times and even proved to bare the gift of writing tolerably good plays himself, though older and jealous colleagues might hint at their not being altogether original.
