PROGRESS V
E CONGRESS (National News Association) WASHINGTON, D. C, Aug. 9. Nearly all of the progressive Republicans in the senate and house of representatives will oppose the election of Taft and Sherman in the presidential campaign. Some will support Roosevelt and Johnson openly and unequivocally, all, and less than half a dozen all told will work for the re-election of Taft. A few of the progressive Republicans will join the new Progressive party, but most of those who will support Roosevelt and JohnBon contend that they can do so more effectively as Republicans who repudiate - the fraudulent nomination of Taft and who maintain that Roosevelt is the actual choice of progressive Republicans as well as of the Progressive party. Two Senators Quit Old Party. With the formal launching of the Progressive party, the nomination of Col. Roosevelt, his declaration of views, and the adoption of the party platform the issues of the presidential campaign are Joined. Progressives of both old parties now know what the new party and its candidates stand for and can decide whether to enlist in the new cause. The Tribune correspondent today interviewed most of the progressive Republicans in congress with a view to determining how they will line up in the campaign. Of the thirteen progressive Republicans in the senate Senator Dixon and Senator Poindexter are the only ones who have joined the Progressive party. Senators Bristow, Crawford and Clapp will support Roosevelt and Johnson, but will remain in the Republican party. Senators La Follette, Cummins, Kenyon and Gronna will support neither Roosevelt nor Taft. Senator Borah is for Taft. Senator Works declined to be interviewed. Senator Brown, who was defeated for renomination, is for Taft, and Senator Bourne, who also was defeated, has not decided what course he will pursue. Cummins Opposed to Third Party. "As I have stated before, I am unalterably opposed to the organization of a third party for the purpose of furthering progressive principles," said Senator Cummins. "I believe that progressives can accomplish more by working for reforms within the Republican party. "As to the stand I shall take with reference to the national ticket I may say that I am studying the questipn of the contests in the Republican national convention for the purpose of determining for myself whether President Taft was rightfully nominated. The conclusion I reach I shall make public either here or in Iowa after the adjournment of congress." In response to an inquiry as to his attitude Senator Kenyon replied: "I am a Republican and am not for the third party." Close friends of the two Iowa senators say these carefully guarded utterances mean that Cummins and Kenyon will support neither Roosevelt nor Taft, but will confine their efforts to work for the Republican state ticket. Bristow for Roosevelt. Both senators find themselves unable to indorse the methods by which the renomination of President Taft Kennedy's "The Busiest, Biggest Little Store in Town." OF TO FIGHT TAFT was procured. At the same time neither senator is an admirer of Roosevelt. Kenyon is a candidate for re-election. T am for Roosevelt and Johnson and the Republicans of Kansas have gone on record in an overwhelming indorsement of Roosevelt," said Senator Bristow. "Roosevelt will sweep Kansas." As in Kansas, the progressive Republicans of South Dakota are in control of their party and are committed to Roosevelt. Senator Crawford said: "I shall not join the party, for that is not necessary in South Dakota. We progressive Republicans are for Roosevelt and he will carry the state." Senator Clapp of Minnesota replied to the Inquiry thus. "As soon as congress adjourns I shall take the stump for Roosevelt and Johnson and work for their election as hard as I can." La Follette Attacks Colonel. The attitude of Senator La Follette is contained in this statement: "Mr. Roosevelt appeals to progressives to join his party. Roosevelt's whole record demonstrates that he has no constructive power; that he is a progressive only in words; that he is ever ready to compromise in order to win, regardless of platform promises or progressive principles. He will not last. In the end the people of this country will get his true measure. No party was ever successfully organized about a man. Principles and issues must constitute the basis of every great movement. "I appeal to progressive Republicans everywhere to maintain their organization within the Republican party. To maintain such an organiza tion blind allegiance to every party nomination and to every party declaration is not essential." In his magazine La Follette has made it plain that he condemns the fraudulent nomination of Taft and the Republican national platform, but he no less vigorously attacks Roosevelt and the new Progressive party. Borah to Remain Regular. "I am not going to join the new party," was the reply of Senator Borah. "That is all I have to say." Although this is all the Idaho senator would say for publication it is well known that he intends to maintain his regularity and support President Taft. Senator Gronna issued a statement

in which he deplored the organization of a third party on the ground that it will split the Republican vote, but he denounced the nomination of Taft and indicated that he would follow the example of Senator La Follette in supporting no national ticket. BOSS BARNES SEES PROGRESSIVE EBB (National News Association) NEW YORK. Aug. 9.
