FIVE ACES BREAKS UP A R GAME "Lucky" Stranger's "Showdown" Brings a Shower of Bullets.
(National News Association) CHICAGO, July 24. Barring the "fact that five men were wounded, all the furniture was broken up and bullets flew like hail, Victor Barrons' little poker party at his roadhouse In West Creek, near Hammond, Ind., Monday night was a decided success. All those present held good hands In fact, such a lot of good poker hands being dealt at the same time was almost unheard of by most of the players. This fact might not have been commented upon, however, had not James Phillips, a lanky Kentucky visitor, noticed another peculiarity of the game. One of the "lucky" players had opened a pot and drawn three cards. Phillips drew one card and filled a flush. He bet half of his pile of chips and, to his consternation, was raised by the "lucky" stranger. "Let's see what you've got," said Phillips. "Four aces," said the "lucky" player," exhibiting his hand. But that was not the most remarkable feature of his hand. Two of the aces were hearts. "Got any more aces?" asked Phillips drily. The possessor of four aces angrily waved hjs arms to show that he could inot be trifled with In that way. The movement was an unfortunate one, (however, for another ace flew out of 'his sleeve. ' That was enough for Phillips. He
picked up a chair and threw it at the "lucky" man. Several revolvers were drawn and five men were wounded before the fight was concluded. Phillips made his way home, threatening to kill anybody who tried to stop him. He gave himself up half

j Animals That Ars Always Enemies. Many animals are born with an in
herent antipathy for other animals. The excessive fear shown by young rabbits which for the first time smell a ferret and of young turkeys -which hear the shrill cry of a hawk they have never heard or seen before are
proved examples of the strength of these Instinctive antipathies. But the case of the weasel and rat is, perhaps, more to be noticed because of the greater equality of the antagonists. The feud is so bitter that a meeting between them almost certainly means death to one or both. Friendships are 'not uncommon between the cat and dog and have been known between a dog and wolf, but the mutual attitude of the weasel and rat is invariably warwar that Is waged to the death.
Great In His Line. Robert Barr once showed a portrait of Mark Twain to a silk merchant of Lyons. "Tell me who that Is," Mr. Barr said. The merchant gazed at the portrait and answered, "I should say he was a statesman." "Supposing you wrong in that, what would be your next guess?" asked Mr. Barr. "If he ls not a maker of history he is perhaps a writer of it a great historian, prob- ! ably. Of course it is Impossible for me . to guess accurately except by acciflent, I but I use the adjective 'great' because I I am convinced this man Is great in his line, whatever it Is. If he makes silk ; he makes the best" Mr. Barr told the ! French merchant who the portrait rep- ' resented and said, "You have summed him up In your last sentence." London

URGES COURSE IN INDUSTRIAL EDUCATION
State Superintendent, While
in This City, Says Coarse Should Be Put on Curriculum of Schools.
"Industrial education is the great need of the public schools in the state of Indiana," said Charles A. Greathouse state superintendent of public instruction while in the city yesterday visiting the Educational department of the Earlham summer school. Mr. Greathouse Is making his annual tour of the Universities and normal schools which offer special preparatory work for teachers, for his annual report for the state legislature, so that certain recommendations may be made for the betterment of the educational work. Mr. Greathouse arrived from Rochester, Ind., where he visited the normal school. Indiana State University at Bloomington, Danville Normal school and Valparaiso have been visited during the past few weeks. Jn speaking about the plan to have school practically the entire year Mr. Greathouse said: "The school corporations over the entire state have an immense amount of money invested in school buildings and equipment. At present they remain idle during the
summer months vacation. What would people say if a business man with as much money invested would let his business rest in idleness for three months. "People have become accustomed to the present system and it is a very difficult task to bring about a change of this kind. The change must be made sooner or later so that the schools of this state will maintain their high position and rank with those of other states throughout this country. I expect to make a serious effort to secure legislation which will provide school for at least a half day during the summer months. "We need courses in Industrial work in every school throughout the state. There are two classes of students. Those who complete the common school branches and enter high school with the view of going to some college or technical school, and the other class consists of those who finish their high school work to enter their life vocation. The latter is the larger of the two classes. "It is for the good of these students that they should have the opportunity to pursue some professional branch of study. To do this manual training, domestic science, agriculture, and other branches of work should be given on the curriculum of the high school. "This is an opportunity for the schools of Indiana to lead in the educational work. The taxpayers of this
state should realize that this is a question which is to their interests and for their benefit." Superintendent Greathouse believes that if enough interest is taken by the people over the state, that , there is not the slightest doubt but that instructors from the technical schools can be secured to give the courses in the high schools. According to the plan which has been mapped out by Supt. Greathouse for the summer term of school, only those who desire, would necessarily have to attend. Regular work could be given for half a day, and then work on the play grounds under good supervision, work in the carpenter shop, forge, or experiments in agriculture would complete the course. This is a big experiment and if it is carried through by Supt. Greathouse it will mean much to those who are unable to take a college education it is believed. Richmond, he said, has courses in the industrial sciences now including manual training, forging, sewing and domestic science. He said Richmond also has one of the largest public school play grounds in the state and that is equipped for a few of tjie popular sports, but owing to the lack pf funds, it is not equipped as it should

be. The citizens, Mr. Greathouse believes, should give this their attenUon as it affords the place and the opportunity for their children to spend the day in playing games and enjoying recreations in a wholesome and beneficial atmosphere. His suggestions will be taken up by the school board.
