Progressives Adopt Splendid Platform and Place State Ticket in Field.

(National News Association) JACKSON, Mich., July 22. Michigan progressive Republicans, instate convention Saturday broke away from the Republican party, as represented by the Chicago Convention, and declared their devotion to Theodore Roosevelt for the presidency. . They declared a crime against popular government was perpetrated at Chicago and that fraud struck a blow at the very foundations of the republic. They declared they were cheated of the opportunity to elect a president by a repudiated national committee who acted at the beheBt of the special interests. By almost a unanimous vote the delegates went on record as favoring the placing of an entire ticket, both state and national, into the field. A few instructed delegates voted against the move in order to record the sentiment of their home counties, but explained to the convention that they personally were for separation from the old party. Delegates to the national progress

ive party convention in Chicago, presidential electors, members of the state central committee and a member of the national committee were chosen. The platform adopted was as follows: "We denounce in unequivocal terms the crime against popular government perpetrated at Chicago in the national Republican convention. We repudiate the action of that convention, made up in part of fraudulently seated delegates, and declare that the fraud there perpetrated strikes a blow at the very foundations of the republic, which can only survive through free and uhtrammeled popular government. We declare the action thus consummated can not be and is not binding upon any citizen. . "The situation thus produced makes it imperative that proper steps be taken to give to the people the opportunity to express their will in the selection of a president, out of which they were cheated by the successful fraud practiced by a repudiated national committee at Chicago at the behest of the special interests. "The constant effort of crooked business, in unholy alliance with crooked bosses, to usurp the powers of government, through control of party machinery, constitutes the greatest menace to real popular rule. Therefore, this body of Independent citizens here and now dedicates its efforts to the maintenance and perpetuation of those principles of social and industrial justice and equality of opportunity upon which the republic was founded, and which must endure and be transmuted into a rule of political conduct if the nation is to survive. '"We . are especially concerned in the election of a progressive delegation to the Senate and House of Representatives, and we repudiate as un

worthy of the confidence of the people of the state of Michigan any candidate now holding office who does not favor the progressive measures advocated by Theodore Roosevelt and the progressive delegation in Congress, and who do not make open and specific declaration of their fidelity thereto. "We pledge the delegates to the national convention of the party to the nomination of Theodore Roosevelt for president of the United States and instruct them to commend to the national convention " a thorough discussion and a clear declaration of progressive principles to be embodied in the national platform, and among others the following: f "The initiative, referendum and recall and direct nominations through primary elections," not only as applied to states, but also in the extension of these principles to' the nation as a whole, and the direct ejection of United States senators. ' ''' "The equalization of the burdens of taxation upon a property basis. "A universal parcels post. "The extension of the postal savings bank system. "Government operation of and ownership, of express and telegraph service. ' "The - reasonable valuation of the physical property of railroads and making such value the base line for determining reasonable rates and a fair return on the actual Investment. "The extension of the powers and the administrative control of the Interstate Commerce Commission. "The federal regulation of all corporations engaged in interstate business and the prohibition of the creation of artificial values by watered stocks and bonds.

"The extension of the civil service

law to me consular seryice or me United States. "Severance of the diplomatic service from such financial interests as are seeking to exploit defenseless nations.. "Opposition to the Aldrich currency scheme in the interests of competV tion in banking and insurance. "The maintenance of a protective tariff for the benefit of the industries and the laboring men of the United States, except where competition in trade has been destroyed by monopoly and the tariff is used to exact an 'tunjust tribute from - the people and Unjustly increase the cost of living. .) "We favor the conservation of the Ration's natural resources and the res"trie of public property; and public rights from private hands. "We favor the proposed amendment to the state constitution, providing for equal suffrage in Michigan." Watkins Favored for Governor, i Members of the state central committee recommended the following men for state offices: : For Governor State Senator L. Whitney Watkins of Jackson. For United States Senator Theodore M. Joslln of Adrian.

CHAIRMAN BECK IN A CONFIDENT MOOD

' He Even Thinks the Democrats Can Elect a County Ticket in Wayne. Contrary to the rule or precedent, as it may be considered, Richmond Democrats are ready -and willing to accept nominations for any of the county offices, according to Charles Beck, Wayne county chairman and Sixth District chairman of the Democratic party. Mr. Beck Btates that the county ticket for the Democrats has an excellent prospect of being successful. While Chairman Beck is not making a howl, as he puts it, about carrying the county this fall, yet he is looking for a big gain. lie says that in case Republican dissatisfaction increases, the Democrats will have the chance of their lives in this county, which has been . considered a Republican stronghold. Anyway, a county ticket will be put in the field, as usual. JuBt how the ticket is to be chosen has not been decided; that is, whether a mass meeting will be held, to which all Democrats in the county will be invited, or whether township meetings will be held to elect delegates to a county convention. The mass meeting or county convention will be held during the last week in August or the first in September. It is believed that if each township were to elect delegates to the convention, that a larger representation would be had at the county convention, as voters would take more interest. Already a great deal of work along the lines of organizing the county has been done, according to Chairman Beck. "Do you believe there is any doubt about Finly Gray being re-elected?" Mr. Beck was asked. ".There is not the least doubt," was the emphatic answer. "Finly Gray has done everything he promised to do and has been a representative of the whole people. Gray is a man strictly for the people and not the party. While he is on" the Democratic ticket he is no more a Democrat than a Republican when it comes to doing right. He can't see party lines in such cases. That's what we must get away from these party lines. "When Gray went to Washington he wrote his platform and he has

abided by it. Gray will carry Wayne county." In answer to a question as to how he found conditions in other counties in the Sixth district. Chairman Beck stated that everything is favorable to Democratic victories, or gains, at least. Mr. Beck said that he had sent out letters to each of the eight county chairmen in the district and had just received replies from them, in which they declared that prospects for Democratic success never looked better. Mr. Beck says that among those spoken of for the nomination for representative from Wayne county is Alonzo Bertsch, of Cambridge City, who was a candidate for joint representative two years ago. Earl Crawford, farmer and school teacher in Fayette county, is the Democratic nominess for joint representative of Wayne and Fayette counties.
