STEFFENS IS ANARCHISTIC"
(National News Association) LOS ANGELES, July 19. Stating his social theories in response to a searching cross examination by District Attorney Fredericks, Lincoln Steffens, the magazine writer, on tha fctand today in the trial of Attorney Clarence Darrow, charged with jury bribing, asserted he saw nothing wrong in freeing a man whom he knew was guilty of murder when the motive . was the result of class resentment against Injustice. Steffens, unruffled by the bruskness of the district attorney's manner, went through the long examination, smiling at times and always willing to answer and explain bis views as well as give the facts In the case. Steffens is the most important witness for the defense. Through him the hope to show that the arrangement for bringing in : pleas of guilty .in the McNamara case had been completed before the bribery scandal was sprung. Steffens today told of a conference between Darrow and Bert Franklin at a table in a hotel grill room where the McNamara jury list was openly discussed, and declared he heard no special reference to any particular name. On the cross examination Fredericks himself directed the fire of ques'tions. Fredericks asked Steffens if he were not an anarchist and the latter replied that he was "worse than that." In explanation of this remark Steffens said that after the McNamaras had pleaded guilty and before their sentence an officer of the court called on him at his hotel and asked him if be had not brought money from New , York for the ' Ilarriman campaign in Los Angeles and whether he did not vote the Socialist ticket. Steffens declared that he told the officer that he had brought the money but that since seeing the conduct of the court and the behavior of the people of Los Angeles and the whole country, the anger and violence and hate actual anarchy If there were an anarchist ticket in the field he would give it his support. Steffens acknowledged that he had represented all througn the negotiations that J. J. McNamara would have to go free. In answer to- further questions Steffens admitted that he knew that J. J. McNamara was guilty; that he found it out shortly after arriving in Los Angeles last November when he saw the McNamaras. Steffens said that he saw nothing wrong in trying to free a man guilty of a crime such as J. J. McNamara had committed, which was not an individual crime, but a social crime, the result of resentment of a class against injustice, which, he characterized as a revolutionary crime. Steffens said in his talk with the McNamaras it was evident to him that they represented a great class of American citizens who believe they cannot get justice except by crime. Steffens concluded by admitting that he had tried very hard to set J. J. McNamara free.

f llUll vil'Vii aviiuo irv iiiunvi Women Pale and Weak They Neglect Thefr Bowels and $. the poisons Vitiate the X Bl- i Hot weather has a very weakening effect on women. They become too languid to exercise and have appetite for light, tasty foods, like salads and other cold concoctions, which do not digest readily and tend to increase their natural tendency to constipation. At this season women, especially, need all their strength to resist the enervating effect of the heat. Good digestion and regularity of the bowels are essential. Some fruits have laxative properties, but they are uncertain in their effect, and are not generally advised. A mild bowel stimulant and digestant, 6flrh as Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin, is preferable because it is certain in its effect, natural in its action, and wholly safe. Take a dose of Syrup Pepsin at night and by morning the sick headache and indigestion will be gone. Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin is sold in drug stores everywhere, and costs fifty cents a bottle; a larger size, intended for family use, costs one dollar. If ycu have never used Syrup Pepsin and would like a free trial bottle, postpaid, write to Dr. W. B. Caldwell, 406 Washington St., Monticello. Illinois.
