SICKLESJDDRESS Protests Against Appeal to Sectionalism by New York Fire Eater. (National News Association) OYSTER BAY, N. Y., July 13. A protest against any hint of sectionalism in the new Progressive party was made yesterday by Col. Roosevelt, iwho said that he did not "care a rap" ! "where a man was born or whether his j father wore the blue or the gray, so ilong as he was the right type. Col. (Roosevelt was told of a speech made yesterday by Maj. Gen. Daniel E. (sickles of New York at the meeting !for the organization of the new party tin this state. Major Gen. Sickles was (quoted as saying Woodrow Wilson was h'born amid rebel surroundings and that we of the North have never been disposed to put such a man in the j White House." Col. Roosevelt said he could not disIcuss the speech, but that it was the Klesire of the founders of the new parity to make the movement one which would truly represent all sections of the country. j "The calU for the progressive contention," he continued, "stated that (this was to be a nation-wide, nonsecItional movement, free from any of the sectional or other jealousies and bitterne8ses of the past." I Cites Chicago Speech. "In my speech at the Orchestra lHall mass meeting in Chicago, in (which I stated that I would accept the jprogressive nomination if tendered to 'me, I also stated that we appealed 'alike to the men who wore the blue land the men who wore the gray and rto sons of the men who wore the blue and to sons of men who wore the gray. "I am myself by blood half a Georgian. (The brothers of my own mother served in the Confederate navy (just as the kinsfolk of my father servkd in the Union army, i "No man has been more prominent fin this movement than Judge Ben jLIndsey, born in the South, whose father served In Forrest's Cavalry. We appeal to Northerners and Southerners, Easterners and Westerners alike. "All L ask is that the man himself Te of the right type, and as an American he face, in patriotic spirit, from !a standpoint of one to whom all the ;citizens of this country are equally 'dear, the great and vital issue which inow cbncern all the American people alike. And I do not care a rap where he was born. Greets Many Callers. . "And whether a man's father wore the blue or the gray matters not to 'me if the man himself stands true in jthe great ideals which it is imperative;Jy . necessary that our people should .translate Into living acts." Former Senator Allee and nine othr Delaware men who have been interested in the new party came to see Col. Roosevelt yesterday. "They came in to talk over conditions In Delaware," said the colonel. ,'They said they would begin the primaries campaign soon and that they believed the Republican machine totally misrepresented the people." The former President was asked waemer ue woum commeni on me testimony of George B. Cortelyou before a committee of the Senate in "Washington yesterday concerning the source of the campaign fund of 1904 and whether he would be willing to go to Washington to give his testimony. "There is nothing I can say about that," he replied. "I will refer you to the letter which I wrote to Judge Parleer at the time, in which I denied that and contributions had been made by corporations in return for promises of Immunity. Every statement in that letter was true, and the subsequent events bore them out. Timothy L. Woodruff of New York ,fend A. F. Moore of Pittsburgh also called on Roosevelt. Luken & Co., Special Agents. of organizing the new party in Manhattan, and Moore discussed the situation generally. Mr. Moore said as he was departing that he would bet $500 that Taft would run fourth that is, behind the Socialist candidate. Dwight B. Heard, who was a Roosevelt delegate to Chicago from Arizona, was another of the colonel's callers ooday. Asked if he would comment on Senator Lorimer's attack on him in the Senate, the colonel replied: "I certainly have no comment to make on Mr. Lorimer." If you are a housewife you cannot reasonably hope to be healthy or beautiful by washing dishes, sweeping and (icing housework all day, and crawling into bed dead tired at night. You must yet out into the open air and sunlight. If you do this every day and keep your i tomach and bowels in good order by taking Chamberlain's Tablets when needed, you should become both healthy and beautiful. For sale by all dealers. A musements THEATRICAL CALENDAR At The Murray. Lewis-Oliver Stock company, indefinite. -. -.- Murray Theater. "The Village School Master" will never cease to grow old, and will always prove a splendid play from a box office standpoint, when it will keep the audience in the laughing mood that it has done for the past two days at the Murray theater. The Lewis & Oliver players were never seen to better advantage. The men and women of the company gambol around the room dressed as children in the third act, and their costuming and makeups are very clever. The play was written for laughing only and serves its purpose well. "Thorns and Orange Blossoms," Monday matinee. SHETLAND'S TAME 'GULLS. Each Family Has Its Own Flock and the Children Feed Them. There are many small villages in the world that have only one street, but Lerwick, in Shetland, besides having only a single street, possesses only one tree. There are no birds there, not even a sparrow, but the seagulls are plentiful. The seagulls are the sparrows of Lerwick, and as such they have a greater share in the town's life than the sparrows of London. In the morning you will note that a seagull sits on every chimney pot. Seagulls swoop and hover over every roof in town. The air is ful of their strange, high, plaintive, haunting cries. Every house has its own familiar seagulls and every street its own band of them. But they never mix. The children In each house have a pet name for their own particular seagulls, and having called -them by, those names, they feed them every day. Each seagull knows what is meant for him. No bird attached to one house ever seeks to eat the food scattered from the house next door. Fie does not dare to do so. So all day long the seagulls hover and call over the roofs of Lerwick. The people of the town, if they come across a little pile of rice laid upon the roadway, step over it with care. They know that it has been placed there for some seagull. And at night the seagulls leave their appointed chimneypots and fly gracefully away to their resting places on the rocks of the Isle of Noss. Fruit Magazine. How Fishes Breath. By means of their gills fish breathe the air dissolved in water. The oxygen consumed by them is not that which forms the chemical constituent of the water, but that contained in the air which is dissolved in the water. Fishes transferred to water from which the air has been driven out by a high temperature or in which the air absorbed by them is not replaced are soon suffocated. They require aerated water to maintain life and they take it in constantly through their mouths and expel It through their gills, retaining the air. It follows that if the water in a lake should be completely cut off from contact with the air long enough to exbaust the supply of air the fish in the lake would die. It would take a severe and pretty long continued freeze to accomplish this, but It might happen and doubtless has frequently happened with a nuH body of water. fit. Niche-1
T. P. A. Notes BY W. H. Q. At the last meeting of the post, arrangements were made to hold the annual T. P. A. picnic in Glen Miller park, Saturday, August 10. Various committees were appointed to look after the plans and arrange for- the different features of the picnic. Marion Shreeve's committee will have complete charge, the other committees selected working under the regular committee on arrangements. Mr. Shreeve will call as many ladies to his assistance as he desires. Many and various means of entertainment and amusements are being planned. Athletic contests will be a feature of the program. The annual picnic has become a fixed event in the social calender of the T. P. A. and is looked forward to with pleasure by all those who attend. While press chairman Quigg and his big gang are peacefully enjoying life at Crooked Lake in the T. P. A. camp, quite a few of the travelers are compelled to hustle up and down the hot, dusty roads in quest of an order for a box of prunes or a paper of tacks. To all insult to inujry and to cause the poorer brethren to all the more feel his poverty the genial press chairman sends word to one of the cubs that the T. P. A. notes must be written by this same over-worked cub for several weeks to come as he intends to stay at Crooked Lake until J tne rrost is on tne pumpkin down here in litUe old Wayne county. It is to be hoped that "Shorty" Shreeve will use all the power that is pent up in his little two by four body and prevail upon everybody to bring an abundance of chickens to the picnic. "Shorty" says the crop is a little late this year, but promises to have a few young frys fattened by August 10. Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Findley of Chicago, spent a few days in Richmond last week. E. D. was a very much welcomed visitor at the club rooms and all the boys at headquarters were pleased to see old Findlay. "Word comes from Crooked Lake that J. B. Heggar is not giving much of his time to fishing or bathing, but is found every day sitting on the large veranda of the hotel with a large circle of ladies gathered around him. His wonderful tales of the things he has done and not done, his stories about his large and vari-colored shirts and socks and trousers that he has at home are proving interesting to the ladies. It is understood the description he has given of his home and its bright and brilliant colors has caused many an elderly maiden to sit by the hour with J- B. and wonder if it were possible that all he says is true. Everything is quiet around Post C rooms these days. Nearly all of the old guard are away on vacations and only a few of the regulars, such as Hasty, Thatcher and Gordon are in at tendance. Don't forget the chicken August 10. Secretary Hasty has again come forward with his semi-annual warning to all delinquents of the T. P. A. Any one not having paid his dues by July 1 forfeits all benefits of the association. No member can afford to overlook this matter.. Accidents generally happen when one is the least prepared for them. A WEAK WOMAN ANDHER STORY In Roral, Ark., Lives a Lady Who Feels That Her Strength Was Restored by Cardui. Floral, Ark. "I must speak a good word for Cardui," writes Mrs. Viola Baker, of this place. "About a month ago I was in very bad health. I was so weak and nervous that 1 was not able to do my housework. "My husband bought me one bottle of Cardui, the woman's tonic. I took it according to directions and now 1 am in good health. "I think Cardui is a fine tonic for weak women." And you are not the only lady who thinks so, Mrs. Baker. Thousands, like you, have written to tell of the wonderful benefit Cardui has been to them. Cardui contains no minerals, or other powerful drugs. It contains no glycerin or other mawkish-tasting ingredients. It is just a pure, natural extract, of natural vegetable herbs, that have been 1ound to regulate the womanly functions and strengthen the female system. All druggists sell Cardui. See yours about it. Once having got a possible purchaser inside the door, they reason he should be made profitable to them. The floor manager does not assume that attitude of royal indifference as with us. He watches the struggle beween salesperson and customer. If the latter shows signs of escaping into the open with his purse Intact another cleric is brought forward as a re-enforcement Some establishments still lay fines on clerks who do not effect sales, but the system of inciting the sales force to Its utmost efforts by giving percentages is now coming into vogue. The method that London stores have of letting a cash girl conduct a customer who has finished bis purchases to a central cash desk and wrapping counter, where he stands in line, keeping an anxious eye on his goods till they are parcelled, seems to us archaic and cumbersome. An Oxford street merchant, however, reasons differently; "When a patron has finished his purchases he is better out of the -way of new customers. English men and women prefer privacy when they are making purchases, which would be Impossible were customers allowed to sit at the counter, awaiting their packages. Then the wrapping force works more rapidly when the patron watches and urges haste." I did not see how that particular force could work any more slowly, but his other argument might have some merit Business. CHICHESTER S PILLS eN. The Wood Nightjar Has a Way of Openly Concealing Itself. In his book A Naturalist In the Guianas" Eugene Andre tells of the tricky manner in which one bird fools the hunters. He says: "The wood nightjar is a difficult bird to detect during the day. He chooses for perching some mottled stump or branch so closely resembling bis plumage tfcat he appears to form part of the bough upon which he is sitting. I suppose that in my wanderings I must have passed quite close to a good many of these large nightjars, yet I must confess that only on one occasion did I get a good opportunity of observing the habits of this bird. "We had had a morning's duck shooting and were resting iu the shade of one of the mangrove trees which line the creeks, when what bad appeared to me to be a dry stump Jutting out of one of the branches seemed to move slightly. I threw lumps of clay and bits of stick at it, but it did not move until it was actually struck, when, to our surprise, a wood nightjar flitted a short distance away, alighting on a stump similar to the one which he had left a moment before. Be immediately flattened his tail against his perch and assumed an attitude which gave him all the appearance of being part of the stump on which be rested. "I disturbed him repeatedly, and he Invariably followed the same tactics. He always chose as resting places stumps or branches which his plumage resembled, and he took a position so suggestive of a piece of wood that 1 should certainly have passed him by had I not been watching bis movements and seen him alight." A BISMARCK STORY.
i It Show the Gentler' Sid af the Man of Blood and Iron. - The French surgeon Cxernicke in his reminiscences of the Franco-Prussian war tells a story that seems to place Bismarck in a new and mora gentle light. He says: "Seated on soma straw and propped np against a pillar-of the church of Rexonyllle was one of oar poor sol diers, a quite young man named RosalgnoL A shell, striking him like the lash of a whip, had carried away both his eyes and the bridge of his nose, leaving the front of the skull bare. This fearful wound was covered with a dressing. Ha lav there calm, silent and motionless, in quiet resignation. "Bismarck stopped in front of him and asked me what was his case. lie seemed really touched. "There is war for you. messieurs, the senators and deputies T Then, turning to one of his suit, he said, 'Please bring me soma wine and a glass.' lie filled the glsss to the brim, took a sip. and then, gently tapping the shoulder of the poor martyr, he said, 'My friend, will you not drink something? Bousing himself from the deathlike stupor that was creeping over him, the man assented. "We then saw Bismarck stoop and very softly and slowly give the wounded soldier the wine. Rising again, he drank what was left in the glass and said, 'What is your name, my boy, and where do you come from? Bosslgnol. from Brittany The count then took his hand and sald.1 am Bismarck, my comrade, and I am very proud to have drunk out of the same glass as a brave man like you. and, stretching bis band over the horribly mutilated head, ha seemed to give him a mute benediction.' A Wisconsin archbisop has spoken his mind about the habit of wearing craiy" hats to church. 'Some women who have been interviewed agree with the archbishop. They say that one should not wear "crasy" hats to church. But -none of the women have admitted that their hats were "cracy." i Hicko' Capudino , Cloars tho Mind By removing headaches.
