lEATOfl POSTOFFICE JOB IS HOW OPEN Postmaster Albright Has Resigned to Return to His Newspaper Duties. t HE : ,V (Palladium Special) EATON, O., June 27. To assume
the active management of the Eaton Register, a weekly publication, Charles E.'Albright has tendered his resignation, as postmaster, although such action is not generally known because of alleged efforts to avoid publicity. Who will succeed to the position is not yet known, although it is currently reported that Hon. Oscar A. Gale, an ex-county auditor and active worker in the county's Republican ranks, has become an enthusiastic aspirant for appointment. In view of the fact that the county central and executive committees have not yet been asked for an endorsement, it is not known just how far the efforts of Gale have progressed. X Recalling similar actions of these boards in endorsing applicants for like positions, it, becomes, readily apparent that Gale might win without recommendation. When the postoffices at Camden and Lewisburg were made vacant the committees named their choice, but in both instances Senator T. E. Burton, and his former colleague, Charles F.,- Dick, overrode the endorsements and selected their own appointees. Following the death of the late Edmund J. Albright, who was associated In the newspaper business with his brother, Postmaster Albright, the plant and business of the Register was J taken over by the latter. v. When your child has whooping cough be careful to keep the cough loose and expectoration easy by giving Chamberlain's Cough Remedy as may be required. Beauehamps had the honor of appearing as partner with the king in the minuet, a dance which was introduced in 1G50 in France, and no court ball was ope-ed in BJurope for a century and a half without it. About the 'year a Toyol academy of dancing was formed under the auspices of Beavhnmps. Lulli, Moliere and others, the. object of which was to elevate the art and check all abuses. The dogs are half fox, but they do nt seem to care very much for poultr. They have been known to turn" vp their noses at nice fat pullets and fo fishing for crabs instead. The dugs hunt in packs along tbe banks, of Jhe rivers in tbe Amazon alley, and tfce crawfish and land .crabs of that region are their especial prey. The crabs ffen put up a vigorous fight, but the dogs have a way of turning them ovr and biting them in a vital spot Just as the thoroughbred terrier, polishes off a rat New York World. A musements THEATRICAL CALENDAR At The Murray. Lewis-Oliver Stock company, indefinite. "Not Guilty" Tonight. Starting tonight, the Lewis & Oliver Players will offer the great English melodrama, "Not Guilty." The first act shows the brokerage offices of one of the biggest corporations in New York, and the killing of the old broker. The plot deals with the ambitions of an old man to marry his daughter to a man of . his selection. As is usual it is not her choice. This play adapts itself readily for stock purposes. It has just enough of the melodrama to make it intensely interesting, while its predominating assets are its splendid comedy, and its fine characterizations. New and elaborate scenery will be used in the play. Seats now on sale. Wanted Copies of Palladium of April 1st; leave at Palladium office. ( BROWNING'S "SORDELLO." Mystery of That "Colossal Derelict on the Ocean of Poetry." The impenetrable nature of Robert Browulng's "Sordello." published in 184 "ft colossal derelict on the ocean of poetry," as William Sharp terms it. has been tbe theme of many anecdotes. Tennyson declared, writes Lilian Whiting in "The Brownings Their Life and Art," that there were only two lines in it the opening and. the closing ones which he understood, and "they are both lies," he feelingly added. Douglas Jerrbld tackled it when he was Just recovering from an illness and despairingly set down his inability to comprehend it to the probability that his mind was impaired by disease, and. thrusting tbe book into the hands of his wife, he entreated her to read it at once. He watched her breathlessly, and when she exclaimed. "I don't know what this means; it is gibberish." Jerrold exclaimed. "Thank God, I am not an idiot." A French critic. Odysse Barot. quotes a passage where the poet says. "God gave man two faculties." and adds, "I j wisn wntle he was about it God had supplied . another namely, the power of understanding Mr. Browning." Mrs. Carlyle declared that she read "Sordello" attentively twice, but was unable to discover whether the title referred to "a man, a city or a tree." Oddi'tioa. Because a man cannot hear a dew drop is no sign that he is deaf, nor is it a sign of blindness because he never saw a horse fly, a board, walk, a stone fence, a dog's pants, a rope walk or a clam bake. - Not a Loan. This peculiar word is frequently found in Scandinavian communities as tbe name of a newspaper, such as St Cloud Budstikken. It is a Norwegian word. 1.200 years old at the least and has a very peculiar origin. In those days, when tbe coasts of Norway were ravaged by rlrates. tbe Inhabitants had to resort to all sorts of devices to warn those at a distance of tbe approach of these piratical craft. When one was seen on tbe horizon a man went up to the top of a mountain, where be lighted a beacon Ore. This could be sen for a lone distance and was known to be a warning. When it was seen in tbe distance another fire was lighted on another bill until all over the country fires blazed from every hilltop and tbe people prepared to defend themselves. They also had a system of messengers. The man who first sighted tbe sail would take an arrow and send it to bis neighbors. From town to town this arrow was sent until all were warned. These were rather primitive ways of telegraphing, bnt were so effectual that in the course of twentyfour hours all Norway knew of the ap- ! proach of pirates. This system of spreading the news was called "budstikken." and when there were no more pirates the newspapers became spreaders of the news and so were appropriately styled budstikken. Exchange. HARDNESS OF A DIAMOND. ProsMd Botwoen Steal Rails tho Gem Would Sink Into tha MataL It is difficult for one not Intimately acquainted with the brilliant and sparkling gems to really just how bard a diamond may be. A carn-nter runs his plane over a piece of wood and out come tbe pretty curly shavings. Now. if a plane Is made with a diamond blade Instead of a steel blade and the btade is set just right the plane when run over gta-s will turn out flee, thinnest shavinjrs something like those made by a plane on wood. This gives some idea of the wonderful hardness of a diamond, yet there Is something harder thau a diamond. It is another diamond or evn tbe same diamond, for a diamond may be extra hard In one part and not so bard a it ought to be In another part. . The Kohinoor diamond was in places so hard the cutters feared they might have to clve up work on It. Other parts of the stone were soft. If you could say nny diamond is soft. If a diamond is placed betweeu tbe ends of two heaviest steel railroad rails
and then by hydraulic pressure the i rails are forced closer together and then still closer until they touch, the dlamond will sink right into the steel almost like a key forced into beeswax. New York lress. COLLEGE LIFE TODAY. Studont Ideals Much Highor Than They Were Fifty Years Ago. Not only upon the shields of onrj American universities do we find "Veritas." In spirit at least It Is also clearly written across the face of tbe entire college life of our times. Gen tlemanliness. openmindedness, originalitv. hftnnr nntrintlam n t h rlioua nm increasingly round in Don tne serions pursuits and the play life of our Amer ican undergraduates. The department! in which these Ideals are sought is not so Important as the certainty that the student is forming such Ideals of Lhor oughness and perfection. Furthermore, the standards of morals and conduct among the American undergraduates are perceptibly higher than they were fifty years ago. There is a very real tendency in the line of doing away with such celebrations as have been connected with drinking and Immoralities. To be sure, one will always find students who are often worse for their bacchic associations, and one must always keep in mind that the college Is on earth and not in heaven. But a comparison of student customs today with those of fifty years ago gives cause for encouragement Century Magazine. Modesty should be tbe virtue of those who possess no other. Lichtenberg.
