the ordinary citizen against the powers that prey, and a born leader of men. lie said that Roosevelt did not

want to enter the fight against Taft,

'having reached the summit of human j ; ambition, and only went into it be-1 j cause of his patriotism and sense of1 duty. He compared him with Wash- J

pngton who. when he retired as comimander of the Continental army, said he would go back to private life, but j w ho, a short time later assumed the (burdens of president of a new country jbecause he had been called to this (high office by his fellow countrymen. Rev. 8. R. Lyons Spoke. The Rev. S. R. Lyons, pastor of Reid Memorial church, was the next speak!er. He said conditions today were similar to those in the early sixties, land that he had never felt more like Ipreaching. "Good," shouted some one. "Take ;as your text 'Thou shalt not steal.'" jThe crowd roared its applause.

Dr. Lyons said that until three months ago he had been a supporter of President Taft, but that he now realized his mistake and was going into the new movement with all his heart and ' soul. "God is with us in this work," he said. Dr. Lyons concluded his address by stating that the ques-

ition o? today had resolved itself as one ! between the man who wears what he j pleases andthe man who wears overlalls. Alfred Bawls, a factory mechanic,

was called upon, and he remarked that the stench v from Chicago was still in his nostrils and he was glad that there was a gseat west wind blowing

I "while the Democrats were in session !at Baltimore. He said he was born !ln England, ancDthat he had come to this country to enjoy the blessings rof complete liberty, but since he had ;tecome an American citizen he had, ;for the first time in his life experienced the feel tog of having one to dictate as to how he should vote. He pledged Ihis Bupport'to the new cause. Prof. Dennis in Fight. Dr. David W. Dennis, of Earinam college wast applauded when he stated there were ' three vital issues before the country, and that President Taft was wrong' on all of them. "That is the reason the crowd that nominated him support' him," he said. Dr. Dennis stated that Taft had done nothing to benefits the country, and laughingly remarked1 that) since the Standard Oil

BALTIMORE, June 26. Conferences were resumed today on the platform which the Democratic convention will adopt. From the outline of the various planks now available, it is plain that the tariff will be the chief point on which the party will take isue with the Republicans. The tariff plank will follow closely that embodied in the Denver platform, which declared a gradual reduction to a revenue basis and immediate material reductions in the necessaries of life, especially upon such articles of American manufacture as are sold more cheaply abroad than at home. The trust plank will be devoted in the main to a declaration that congress should make amendatory legislation to make the Sherman anti-trust law more effective. A vigorous enforcement of the amended law- will be insisted upon. A joint resolution by congress, providing for the direct election of United States senators will be endorsed. The action of the house of representatives in starting a thorough investigation of the money trust will be strongly endorsed with insistence upon the passage at this session of congress of the Pujo bill, giving greater powers over the national banks. The work of the Aldrich national monetary commission will be rejected insofar as it provides for a central bank, but certain of the commission's recommendations will be endorsed. Endorsement will be given the antiinjunction bill passed by the house of representatives. Legislation will be promised providing for jury trial of all cases where there is direct contempt of court. Other plank which may find their way into the platform are: Declaring for regular increase of the navy, probably the construction of two battleships a year. Improvement of harbors and rivers.

Favoring a national public health bureau. A plank has also been proposed declaring against a third term for presidents. The suffragettes are trying to nail in a plank declaring in favor of woman's right. . The platform is to be short, sharp and incisive. The resolutions committee probably will meet Wednesday evening following the first day's session of the convention. The trust plank reads in part: 'We oppose federal Incorporation or license to work monopolistic exploitation of the people as who?ly unnecessary and as a mere blind to fasten existing industrial evils on the nation. "Our evils are due to Republican departures ia the federal government and in the state legislatures from those Institutions. Our remedy is to return them by democratic watchfulness of corporation grants in the state legislatures and by virile exercise of the interstate commerce power conferred upon the congress of the United States constitution." The resolutions committee is" to hear

a vigorous appeal from the Reform club's tariff reform committee. The Reform club's tariff reform committee has Byron W. Holt as chairman and Henry Deforest Baldwin, Henry George, Jr., Frederick R. Coudert, John Jerome Rooney and several other men are members. One of the strongest points to be made in the tariff plank by this organization will be an attack upon the so-called "frauds" of the protective tariff. It promises that the man with the dinner pail should share in the tariff paid by the consumers. The Republican platform advocates some reforms along this line, but the Democratic plank, it is expected, will present some real remedy.

company had been "dissolved" the price of gasoline had gone up from 10 cents to 18 cents per gallon. Attorney Wilfred Jessup threw cold water on the third party movement. He said he was not a Roosevelt enthusiast and not a supporter of President Taft, although, he believed the president was an honest and sincere man. Mr. Jessup advocated the support of the Democratic ticket, providing Bryan or Wilson was nominated.

Ant Strength. An English scientist weighed a small ant and a dead grasshopper which it was dragging to its nest. The weight of the grasshopper was found to be sixty times greater than that of the ant. The force exerted by the ant in dragging the grasshopper along the road was therefore proportionately equal to that of a man weighing 150 pounds pulling a load of four and onehalf tons or a horse of 1,200 pound a load of thirty-six tons.

ALEXANDRA HONORED Former Queen Is Praised by Her Loyal Subjects. (National News Association) London, June 26 The love and esteem in which Queen Alexandra is held by all British subjects, was strikingily manifested today, on the occasion of the first celebration of Alexandra day. The day is designed to be an annual feature in commemoration of tbe anniversary of the arrival In England of the then Danish princess, to become the bride of the future King Edward VII. In accordance with the suggestion of Queen Alexandra herself the celebration was converted nto a one-day campaign for charity, the purpose being to bring the needs of the philanthropic and charitable organizations of London before the people. With this end in view, more than 1,000 la

dies of title and distinction inn the social world presided at flower stalls scattered over the metropolis, and from early morning until late afternoon sold artificial wild roses for the benefit of the London hospital fund. All of the flower sellers were dressed alike in white with wreaths of wild roses around their hats. The flower baskets that they carried were hung with ribbons of white and blue, the Danish colors, in honor of Queen Alexandra's native land.

Baskets of coin and notes were collected by Lady Mond and a bevy of pretty girls who had a stall on the terrace of the House of Commons, and who permitted no member to escape without paying tribute. Other ladies of title who were stationed at prominent points in the city included the Duchess of Marlborough, the Marchioness of Crewe, the Duchess of Westminster, the Marchioness of Dufferin and Lady Paget.

LAWYERS IN TILT IN CIRCUIT COURT

SAME OLD TRICK

"Your honor, I want to dismiss this case at the cost of the plaintiff," said an attorney to Judge Fox this morning in circuit court. "Dismiss it, dismiss it," gasped the attorney for the defendant In the case. "What right have you to butt in like this?" he continued, addressing the first lawyer. "I was instructed to do so by the plaintiff in the case." was the reply. "Never heard of such a thing." fairly yelled the defendant's attorney. You are a buttinsky." 'Aw, you're crazy." returned the attorney for the plaintiff, disgustedly. The judge smiled and ordered the case dismissed, while the defendant's attorney gave vent to his feeling by incoherent mutterings.

Perilous Prospects. Ton say I must ride horseback." said the man of quiet habits. Yes." replied the physician. "Otherwise I can not answer for your life." "But can you answer for my life if I try to climb on a horse?" Exchange.
