Political Camp Followers Are Marching in by Regiments and Companies. .f - .. (National News Association) ;. CHICAGO, 111., June 14. An army Jbf visitors that is expected to surpass ill records for a national political contention week in Chicago already is (marching into the city by companies nd regiments, and by Saturday the hotels in the downtown section will be killed to capacity. ; Within two weeks after the national committee decided last winter to give nthe convention to Chicago every room In the Congress hotel, where both the rTaft and Roosevelt headquarters have peen located, had been sold out for jthe convention week, an indication of the crowds that are expected to be attracted to the city by the big quadrennial meet of the Republicans. The Blackstone, LaSalle, Sherman (House, Great Northern and other big hotels report a similar demand on 'their capacity, and the proprietors predict that by Saturday night every (downtown hostelry, both big and little, will be hanging out the sign "Cot IRoom Only." Officials in charge of the passenger traffic of the railroads entering Chicago likewise are of the opinion that a new record for crowds "will be established in Chicago this areek and next. f No matter how great the throngs, Ihowever, Chicago expects to be able to give them accommodations. More than 15,000 visitors are expected to be cared for in the big hotels in the loop district, additional to the ordinary run of patronage. Outlying hotels and the larger rooming houses will take care of almost as' many more, according to the statements of hotel experts, while thousands of other visitors will be quartered in private homes with tfriends or relatives. There's little room in this great world of ours for the "fat" woman. She's a hindrance to herself in street cars, flats, elevators. Warm days he's just miserable. Hollister's Rocky fountain Tea makes fat people cool lend 'happy; fills them with life and jBnergy. Just try it. A. G Luken. Insomnia and Tobacco. The dominant characteristic of tobacco Is the fact that it heightens blood pressure. The Irritant action by which It does this sometimes leads to still more harmful results. Its second action is narcotic. It lessens the connection between nerve centers and the outeide, world. These two actions account for all the good and all the bad effects of tobacco. As a narcotic it tempora.jrily abolishes anxiety and discomfort by : making the smoker .care less about what Is happening to mm. But if is a well known 'law of medicine that all the, drugs which In the beginning lessen nerve action increase it in the end. Thus smoking finally causes apprehension, hyperexcitability and muscular unrest Here this inevitable law seems to give contradictory results. Every ; physician knows that an enormous amount of insomnia is relieved by smoking, even if it is at the expense of laziness the next day. At the same time every physician knows that most excessive smokers are troubled with insomnia. Century. iThe very beat ice cream you ever ftte. Seven flavors at Price's. Do You Knew What a Pomandor taf What Is a pomander? Originally it was a mix tare of aromatic substances, carried about to counteract bad smells, but by Xbi early part of the sixteenth century if had come to mean the case In which such perfumes or deodorizers were carried, these cases being usually shared, like oranges or apples and having four, five or six divisions opening ott on hinges from the center. The flrord is derived from the old French pome-amber, signifying amber apple, amber here being used in' the sense of ambergris and not the amber of which beads and the mouthpieces of pipes ate made. The pomanders in the days ft Henry VIII. and Elizabeth of England, were made of gold, ivory, glass, sifter or enamel and were generally ling from short chains. Their contents varied widely, but musk, lavender.roses, ambergris, nutmegs, cloves, mace and stores were among the most usual Ingredients. New York World. EDWIN WOLCOTT WITH THE LEWIS HOLES IN MACARONI. Device by Which the Hollow Strips of Dough Are Produced. Haven't you often asked. "How do they get the holes In macaroni?" Tea, you undoubtedly have, and unless you have visited a macaroni factory you are probably still in doubt Interesting methods are employed in bringing this food into the form In- which it is placed before the public. After the dough has been well mixed and kneaded in a powerful machine it is ready to form into macaroni, which is of a tube shape about one-fourth inch in diameter, or spaghetti, which is a solid stick shape of about oneeighth inch in diameter. This is done by forcing the dough under hydraulic pressure through a cylinder with a flat circular bronze die or mold at the bottom. The macaroni die is full of holes about one-fourth inch in diameter, and each hole has a small pin in the center of it, which is attached to one side of the hole. This pin forms the bole in the macaroni and divides the dough on one side as It starts through the hole, but before the dough reaches the end of the hole the divided side comes together and remains so, making a perfect tube. The spaghetti die contains only plain boles about one-eighth inch in diameter arranged in groups. When macaroni and spaghetti come from the presses or cylinders they are cut into certain lengths, the length depending upon whether the curing or drying is to be done oa trays or by banging over rods. In curing or drying macaroni the length of time varies according to the process employed and to atmospheric conditions outside the factory and the standard of quality maintained. Some makers require only three days, while others take as many as six days. Omaha Bee. , Legend of the Death of Kenith. i The death of Kenith. the half mythical king of Scotland, was one of the most remarkable in all history that Is, if it can consistently be called a historical fact. According to the story, Kenith had killed a son and brother of the warlike Fennella. She for revenge caused Wiltus. the most Ingenious artist of the time, to fashion an automatic death dealing machine, a wonderful statue tilled with bidden springs, levers, etc. When 5 finished and set up this "brazen image" was an admirable work of art. In its right hand it held a basin and in the left an apple of pure gold, both set with dia-v monds and other precious stones. To touch this apple was to dare death, it being so arranged that one guilty of i such vandalism would be immediately riddled by poisoned arrows shot from loopholes in the body of the statue. Kenith was invited to come and inspect the wonder, and. kinglike and just as FenneUa had hoped, be tried to pluck the precious Imitation fruit. The moment his hand touched the incrusted Jewel he was filled with poisoned arrows, dying where be fell. When Folks Feared Gas. In the early days of the last century, when illuminating gas was first used in London, timorous people talked of the dangers of suffocation and of explosions to which the gas. which was still imperfectly purified, exposed the citizens. Scientists confirmed these assertions, and the first gasometers erected in London by Samuel Clegg so terrified the people that no workman would venture to light the gas Jets which had been placed on Westminster bridge." But Clegg soon overcame this difficulty by lighting a torch and applying it to the burners with his own hands. On another occasion before a committee of the Royal society of London be bored a bole in the gas holder and put a lighted candle to it. to the grejft alarm of the spectators, but without causing the sligbest accident. Gradually the eyes even of the most prejudiced were opened to the truth. CARD OF THANKS. CURIOUS CONTRASTS. Authors Whose Writings and Methods of Life Were Contradictory. A man of genius when he writes a book and "all the god comes rushing into his soul" Is in an abnormal state. and hence lives of men of letters have often been in glaring contrast to tbelr writings. Montaigne tells us that he always observed supercelestial opinions to be accompanied with subterranean morals. On the other band, the most latirudinarian professors of epi cureanism have often lived like anchorites or trappists. Some of the best sea songs have been written bj men who never snuffed a salt water breeze, stirring war songs have been written by timid men and women who would have shrieked at the sight of a mouse, and hymns steeped in the very spirit of devotion have been written by men of doubtful morality, who were never less at home than in a Christian church. Charles Lamb was ready to wager that Milton's morning hymn in Paradise was penned at midnight, and we know positively that Thompson, who sang the praises of early rising in the "Seasons," used to lie abed till noon. Sir Richard Steele could discourse eloquently on temperance when he was not drunk. Woodworth In his "Old Oaken Bucket" sang the praise of cold water under the Inspiration of brandy. Dr. Johnson, who wrote so well on politeness, interrupted his opponents with "You lie. sir!" . "You are a vile Whig, sir!" Burns was a compound of "dirt and deity." Rousseau, who was always filling people's eyes with tears, betrayed and slandered bis benefactors in turn and sent his children to the foundlings hospital. When Moore proposed to Scott to go and see Melrose abbey, as Sir Walter had described it. by moonlight. "Pooh, pooh." said Scott "you don't suppose I ever snw it by Monday Chats. Doubtful Economy. Hans Schmidt, proprietor of a sawmill, used for fuel the sawdust from ihe factory. It cost him nothing, but it kept four men busy shoveling it. 1 Recently be was persuaded to put in a new equipment which would reduce the amount of fuel one-half. After the machinery had been installed the agent called, expecting to be congratulated. But the German eyed him gloomily. "Doesn't the new plant do all I claimed for it?" he asked. "Yah, but I oberlooks sometings," replied Hans. "What was thatr ' "Veil, it dakes only dwo mens to handle de fuel, but it dakes de udder dwo mens to haul away what we don't use und a team pesides." "I called to see if I couldn't sell you some baking-powder," answered the peddler with the straggling whiskers. "Well, you can't sell no bakin' powder here, an', furthermore, I ain't got no time to waste on agents nor no tramps whatsoever' "Come to think of It, madam," deprecated the seedy gentleman as he fastened his little black valise, "I wouldn't keer to sell you none of this here bakin' powder. Mr. Lewis as Dr. Goodwin, and Marion Milton as Grace were capital in their parts and do good team work. Ralph Jewell stood out quite noticeably as the spiritualistic medium. FIRST ANIMAL HOSPITAL
It Was Established In the Orient Ovee Two- Thousand Years Age. One mast go to the orient and look back more than 2.000 years to find the first animal hospital known. The famous Buddhist emperor of India. Asoka. whose long reign from 264 to 227 B. C abounded in many good works, was probably the earliest to establish a hospital for the treatment of animals, says Our Dumb Animals. Asoka was a true humanitarian as well as a most powerful sovereign and. although ruling a vast domain, became deeply Impressed by the horrors of warfare. He gave up his desire for conquest and the rock inscriptions, which are still extant, record such beneficent edicts of bis as the counseling of planting shade trees, the digging of wells, sending out of missionaries, appointment of special officers to supervise charities, the establishing of hospitals for humankind and animals. It is of interest to know that the last remaining of Asoka's hospitals was devoted to animals. It covered twenty-five acres and was divided into proper wards and courts for the accommodation of the patients. When an animal was sick or injured Its master had only to bring it to the hospital, where It was cared for without regard to the caste of its owner and where, if necessary, it found an asylum In old age. Where Name Spa Originated. Perhaps few people know that the term "spa" as applied to a watering place originated with the resort of that name in Belgium, which a hundred years ago was one of the best known resorts In Europe. Its vogue has continued to a great extent up to the present time, though the high play that once made it famous Is not now allowed by the Belgian government They call It the "pearl of the Ardennes," and its name Is merited, situated as it is in one of the most charming valleys of that range with a most beautiful country surrounding It Nothing could exceed the beauty of the walks and drives in the height of summer, for the well tended parks and gardens of Bejglum are famous, and the whole country is dotted with beautiful country houses. SHE WAS LOYAL.
Likewise Honest Enough to Tsll Lincoln the Truth. . Daring the war between the states Miss N, a high spirited Virginia young lady, whose father, a Confederate soldier, had been taken prisoner by the Union forces, was desirous of obtaining a pass which, would enable her to visit him. Francis "P. Blair agreed to obtain an audience with the president, but warned his young and rather impulsive friend to be prudent and not betray ber sympathy for the south. They were ushered into the presence of Mr. Lincoln, and the object for which they had come was stated. The tall, grave man bent down to the little maiden anil, looking searchingly into her face, said: "You are loyal, of course?" Her bright eyes flashed. She hesitated a moment, and then, with a face eloquent with emotion and honest as his own. she replied: "Yes. loyal to the heart's core to Virginia !" Mr. Lincoln kept his intent gate upon her for a moment longer and then went to his desk, wrote a line or two and handed her the paper. With a bow the interview terminated. When they had left the room Mr. Blair began to upbraid his young friend for her impetuosity. "Now you have done it!" he said. "Didn't I warn you to be very careful? You have only yourself to blame. Miss N. made no reply, but opened the paper. It contained these words: Pass Miss X. She is an honest sjtrl snd can be trusted. A.
