Heart to Heart Talks. By EDWIN A. NYE.

YOUR MOTHER-IN-LAW. The mother-in-law Joke is silly. ilotber-ln-law criticism is unmanly, and mother-in-law hatred is dangerous. No chlvalrlc man should permit himself to feel or act other than as a gentleman if not a son toward the mother of the woman whom he has made his wife. What if you cannot precisely see all things from your mother-in-law's point of view or that you sometimes feel she may be indiscreet? Never mind. Be kind Just the same to the -woman who bore in pain the wife you love. Be generous and courteous. If your mother-in-law has little weaknesses your wife knows, them better than you. And if you are manly and large hearted and Ignore these defects the woman you have married will feel that you are big and fine, and in her heart she will worship you. You are in debt to your wife's mother. . .': " , If your wife is helpful flnd sympathetic, if she is a good mother and a good housekeeper, she got those qualities and that training from her mother. What she Is to you her mother has made her. If you do not respect your wife's mother It may be doubted whether you love your wife. Certain it is that if you continually criticise her mother in the presence of your wife the first thing you know you will lose the love and respect of your wife. And you ought to lose it. The shafts of censure or of sarcasm you level at her mother go straight through the heart of the daughter. She may not resent it openly, but she keenly feels that a slight offered the mother is a fling at the daughter. Moreover If you are too tactful for open criticism, yet at heart are Jealous of your wife's familyyou cannot entirely hide the feeling, and your wife will think . less of you. What sort of woman -would your wife, be if when she married you she should turn her back on her family? Could you trust her? Are not the qualities in. your wife which bind her to her mother the qualities that bind her loyalty to you? This is plain speaking. Is It not true?

Sowing Before Reaping.

Four hundred of Richmond men might have read Harrington Emerson's "Efficiency" in one evening. "They might have read a summary of the experiences of a distinguished soldier, statesman, lawyer, banker and farmer. In a few periodicals Russia's trade with America and the Russian treaty has been summarized. Public playgrounds and the necessity for recreation, the relation of the young man to public life and the necessity for ideals are receiving attention on every side. But four hundred men engaged in the direction of the energy of Richmond, bankers, manufacturers; merchants, doctors, lawyers, would never have hit on all the subjects at once. The mental picture of Harrington Emerson will remain to fortify his philosophy of work- It will be hard to persuade the men who attended the Commercial club dinner last evening that the new science of business management is a fad or fancy yet business men who have never been confronted with it have laughed it to scorn as either "much ado about nothing," or agreeing with it, saw no application to be made in their own business. It is for these reasons that if the Commercial club had done nothing else or did nothing from now on its existence would be justified. Today, tomorrow, perhaps next year some fruit will be borne from the seed planted last night. Planted in the minds and hearts of four hundred Richmond men placed as they are oil the main paths of intercourse it will not take long to spread throughout the whole fiel d of Richmond.

Russia Richmond's Market

To have a man arise at a banquet and in fifteen minutes minutely detail a course of definite action by which a whole city may prosper is a thing not entirely unheard of. When this speech is so compelling as to create immediate action no comment is necessary for the comment has been made. But it is an example of the romantic opportunity ever lurking that Dr. Crawford of Cincinnati should come to Richmond at a time when the Russian treaty is at a crisis. That in a few well chosen words he sketched in the whole national field of trade with Russia, the underlying temper of the people and the necessity of immediate action lest America lose the trade of one-seventh of the globe, was a feat in itself. But how many people in Richmond ever stopped before to consider the relation of Russia to Richmond, Indiana? To have it thrust out into the limelight at such a crisis unexpectedly was quite as thrilling a tale as ever Marco Polo brought to the Venetian commercial princes. The Orient has always been the treasure house of the world, to reach it was the object of Columbus, and the discovery of America was merely a by-product of this quest for a short route. Now it appears that the people of America are just discovering the Orient. Inland men of business do not often discuss international politics. For a long period the United States itself was a sufficient field for commerce now the nation is forced to compete in the great markets of the world. Dr. Crawford's short speech has possibilities in it for every man in Richmond. It is an opportunity.

"As Emphatic as Possible.

Mr. Taft's announcement "I do- not need the delegates from New Jersey, I merely wish my nominatiqn to be as emphatic as possible." was answered yesterday. He did not get. the delegates. New Jersey made her protest as emphatic as possible.

The Finish.

What further repudiation of Mr. Taft and the reactionary doctrines that he stands for is necessary? "j. Under no circumstances now known can' Mr. Taft be nominated except by the gift of the Republican National Committee. In every state in the country where there has been a fair primary Lat which the people could express themselves he has been discredited. The verdict of New Jersey is the expression not only of her citizens but also of the disfranchised citizens of Indiana. For the tactics employed by Kealing and his hirelings have been part of the issue. Mr. Taft early in his administration made common cause with the Kealings, Cannons, Lorimers, and Penroses. He arrayed himself against popular government. Mr. Taft defeated himself and the people defeated the bosses.

DRISCHEL IS READY FOR AUTO SPEEDERS

Autos began passing through this city for Indianapolis early today to be there In time for the Memorial day races. Although no excessive speed has been noticed, the police will be on the look, out for violaters of the speed ordinances, and will watch this habitual violation by those attending the speedway entertainments at Indianapolis. Marshal Dan Drichel of Cambridge city has secured several additional trucks to place across the streets in front of speeders, it is reported, and the "hauls" of this enemy of speed will probably be as heavy as usual. Drischel will not get much sleep this week while waiting for his natural enemies, the auto scorchers.
