Green Scum of tho Nil. "Nile green is an opaque green," said traveler. "It isn't the green of a Wave breaking in the sun. It's the green of the scum that floats on duck ponds. Every year about the middle of April the Nile becomes covered with a green scum, a genuine duck pond cum. It strikes Khartum about April 20, and it floats on down to, Cairo a olid scum that is often 500 miles long without a break. This scum is made of minute lives, algae. It has an offensive smell. It is, in fact, as offensive to the nose as to the eye. How green the Nile is then! On account of this scum the expression, Nile green, rose- But It isn't the waters of the Nile that are green. No; they are always muddy. It is the scum."

HopaUss. "What la the matter with that poor fellow?" asked the man who was "seeing the lunatic asylum." "He has an Interesting face." "That's a poet," replied the attendant. "Queer case." "Tell me about him. Is there any chance of his recovery?" "No; it's hopeless. It seems he had written a pastoral poem Jn which the name of Oberon was used several times, but the proofreader was an Irishman, and when the poem appeared la print Oberon had been changed to O'Brien." Easiest and Cheapest Way to Proour Government Publications. No doubt most people interested in useful reading matter will thank us for Information, obtained through official sources, as to how public documents can be procured with least trouble and at trifling expense. The idea that prevails most generallythat this class of literature may be secured through the courtesy of members of congress is correct only In so slight a degree that it had best be corrected. There are nearly 500 senators and representatives; hence an edition of several thousand copies, if distributed pro rata, gives to each only a few copies. Some of these the senator or representative needs for reference, the few left over are soon exhausted, and those constituents who then write for them are necessarily disappointed, through no fault of the public man whom they have addressed. Now, as a general proposition, the reader who is interested In a government publication will serve himself best by addressing the official known as the superintendent of- documents, government printing office, Washington, who is authorized to have reprinted any government publication for which there is a demand, and sell the same at cost to all applicants. He will mail price lists, divided by subjects, free upon application, and remittance can then, as required by law authorizing such sales, accompany the order. San Francisco Chronicle. '

Ca member Cheese. Camembert is the name of a commune, a few houses about a Camembert church In the prefecture Vimoil tier and the department of Orne. The cheese got its name from the fact that It originated near there, but there isn't a cheese factory nearer than three miles away now, and not enough people live in Camembert to run one of any size. Caen, the principal Camembert market, is in Calvados. The cheese is carted to the shore and carried across the mouth of the Seine to Haver in boats. It is made, however, on the northeastern side of the Seine and from thero comes to Haver direct. The cheese is shipped unripe even to home markets near at hand in French cities. It is seldom over four weeks old when it leaves the factory and often only two or three. Argonaut.

The Proof. "Apropos of international marriages," said a Te$as congressman, "I am reminded of a saying of Vicomte l'OIgnon. ' " 'These American heiresses, grumbled the vicomte to his friend, the Chevalier Tete de Veau, 'are a cold, calculating, designing lot.' " Yes?" said Tete de Veau. " Yes, said l'OIgnon. 'I've just been accepted by Miss Billia Naro and. though Billia is worth twice as much ns I.otta Golde, the latter deellues positively to release me from our engagement.' "Washington Star.

Dr. W. L. Misener of Mechanicsbjirg, has formed a partnership with Dr. Jos. M. Thurston, of Richmond, and will locate in that city in the late autumn. The professional interests of Dr. Misener will be taken over by Dr. Gilbert Hoppes of Indianapolis. The proposition to go to Richmond was made to Dr. Misener about a year

ago, and, coming as it did from a man j

who is recognized as one of the strongest medical men in the state, he felt that it was an opportunity that Bhould not be passed by without due consideration. After holding the matter under advisement for several months, he decided to accept the proposition. Dr. Misener is recognized as a capable and conscientious physician, and a man whose professional duties have always been, performed in a manner that reflected dignity upon his profession. ' He is a graduate of the Physio-Medical College of Indiana, beta a member of the class of 1901. Following his graduation, he was elected to a chair in the institution for two years. He succeeded Dr. Pendleton in the practloe ot medicine at Mecbaaicsburg and has succeeded in establishing a large practice. He is amply qualified and specially fitted for the larger field of endeavor which he will enter, and will doubtless succeed in his new location. In leaving Mechaaicsburg Dr. Misener will be compelled to sever ties that mean much to him as well as to- his patrons and friends. During the eleven years that he has been a resident of that community be has .won the confidence and esteem of a wide circle of friends who will regret to lose his citizenship and associations, as well '.aa 1 the wholesome influence of his life in the community. Notice was received by City Clerk Bescher this afternoon from the Robin- J

eon Fire Apparatus company, of St. Louis, that it would repair without cost to the city the new auto fire combination chemical truckfi recently purchased by the city at a cost of $5,500 and damaged in the Saturday afternoon accident. The machine probably will be sent back to the Robinson factory within the next few days. It is expected the repairs will be made and the truck reurned within thirty or thirty-five days. John Forbes the driver employed by the Mather Bros, company who was struck by the auto Saturday when the heavy machine careened wildly east on Xorth E street, killing Isaac Parry and causing considerable damage, is much better and hope is entertained for his complete recovery. The coroner has not completed his investigation of the accident and therefore can not give out his verdict

upon the death of Parry. It is likely that the investigation will not be completed until the first of next week.

Just Like Heme. The two little girls, six years old or so, were playing housekeeping all alons the garden wall, says the Milwaukee Sentinel. On some principle that no grownup could realize one section of it was the kitchen, another the dining room, another the sitting room, and so on. One small maid was the mistress of the house, and the other was the servant girl. Then the big man came strolling along with a book in his hand and, all unconscious, perched himself on the softest stone in the middle of that wall. "Oh. look how he comes and spoils our play:" wailed one of the twain. "No, indeed." replied the other, with a happy inspiration. "He's my husband, and he's reading in his den. and he's not to be disturbed, so we needn't notice him." So the game went on.

His Incurable D . The late John Hay had been ailing one time, and a friend made bold to ask what the trouble was. "I am suffering from an Incurable disease," Mr. Hay replied with due gravity. Delicacy prevented the friend from making further Inquiry, but he told the story to acquaintances, and the report coon spread through Washington that a deadly disease held the secretary of state within its grasp. At last an intimate acquaintance determined to ascertain the nature of the secretary's ailment, and, meeting the latter one day. be said: "I have been told that yon are suffering from an incurable disease. Is it truer "It is." said Mr. Hay in a sad tone. "What is the incurable disease?" asked the insistent acquaintance. "Old age," said Mr. Hay, with a chuckle.

Hidden Treasures of th Tiber. The waters of the Tiber are said te cover many costly treasures of antiquity. From Lake Nemi, near Rome, many bronze armaments and statuary from the floating palaces of the Emperors Tiberius and Caligula have already been recovered. It has long been the dream of poets and the belief of antiquaries that the Tiber's bed conceals a vast amount of artistic treasures which have been flung into it either from wanton recklessness or for the purpose of preservation from sacrilege. There is a legend that Attila buried all his treasure beneath the river.
