The description of the first operation under ether In Europe as given by Dr. F. William Cook in the University College Hospital Magazine Is reproduced in the London Lancet, and the scene is referred to as the "most dramatic ever enacted in which medical men grouped- the stage." The operation was performed by Robert Liston on Dec. 21, 1S46. "At 2:15 Liston enters, that magnificent figure of a man six feet two inches in height, and says, 'We are going to try a Yankee dodge today, gentlemen, for making men insensible,'' so Liston introduced ether to a London hospital." The subject was a man. thirty-six years old. whose thigh was amputated. ' The operation was successful, and Liston uttered the epilogue, "This Yankee dodge, gentlemen,' beats mesmerism holler." Marvels of India. What a wonderful country is India! There is only one India. Its marvels are its own. There is the plague, the black death. India invented it The car of Juggernaut was also India's invention. jSo was the suttee, and within the time of men still living 800 widows willingly and. in fact rejoicingly burned themselves to death on the- bodies of their dead husbands in a single year. And 800 would ,do it this' year if the British government would let them. Famine belongs especially to India. India has 2,000,000 gods and worships them all. On top of all this she is the mother and home of that wonder of wonders, caste, and also that mystery of mysteries, the Satanic Brotherhood of the Thugs. Churchman. A Coral Pipe. While a United States warship was off Barbados a few years ago a sailor who was amusing himself fishing for sharks brought up from the depths a long "churchwarden" pipe that evidently had been lying at the bottom of the sea for a hundred years or more. It was unbroken and had either been accidentally dropped overboard or washed out of some old wreck. The coral insects had seized upon it and covered the long stem with delicate, lacelike branches and the bowl with fine "vermicelli" work. So completely Was it concealed with the coral coating that it was impossible to determine the original material of the pipe. Oddly enough, the Inside of the bowi oad been left untouched and still showed the stains of tire and nicotine. New York Press.

PHYSICAL ENDURANCE. Athletes, as a Rule, Reach the Zenith of Their Powers iarly. In athletic sports pnysical endurance plays the most important part This is particularly noticeable in the Marathon races. In boxing, wrestling and rowing ability to stand the tremendous strain ou the physical powers is essential. But every athlete has his physical limitations. He reaches the zenith of his powers early and then gradually declines. A victorious Marathon runner seldom repeats hi success, for he has impaired his endurance by his exertions, although be does not think so until he meets with defeat the second time he tries for first prize. A boxer, as a rule, cannot long re main a champion in any class, although a twelve year record has been made by exceptional men. A prominent wrestler said recently that he hoped to remain in the game five years, but could not exceed that limit and still be a topnotcher. Oarsmen win their greatest victories in the first few years of their career. The baseball player holds out well because the strain on him is less violent than on most athletes and he gets needful rest. Pitchers, however, are an exception, and some hold out for many years, but most of them do not Boston Globe. 9204 A Neat and Serviceable Frock. Girls' Dress with or without Waist Trimming. The trimming forms a yoke that is round or the front and pointed at the back, and finished with a standing collar that may be omitted. The pattern is cut in 4 sizes: 4, 6, 8 and 10 years. It requires 3 yards of 40-inch material for the 6 year size. A pattern of this illustration mailed to any address on receipt of 10c in silver or stamps.
