ANCIENT SURGERY.

fThey Uaad a Fil In Trepanning Op rations In Hippocrates' Tim. There is no doubt that some rough form of surgery must have existed from very ancient times, but It Is fitrnnire to find that ho comnlex and

delicate an operation as trepanning is one of the oldest So far as actual records go Hippocrates gives us the earliest account He wrote treatises on fractures, dislocations and wounds of the bead, ip which he described the method of procedure to be followed in the cnse of a fractured skull. His direction was to cut away a piece of bone so that the pressure on the brain might be re

lieved. There are also records about this time and later of a file being used for this purpose, which at a time when anaesthetics were undreamed of must have been, to say tbeJeast. painful. According to Dr. T. Rice Holmes, the operation of removing pieces of bone was performed long before . historic times. The effects on the skull are easily seen after death and are visible

so long as the bones are preserved. From inspection of certain skulls of the later stone age in ancient Britain Dr. Holmes hns come to the conclusion that some of these had undergone the

operation, which must have been performed with a stone implement London Standard.

' The Great Ice Age. It " has " been known during a long "time that in western Europe man ex- , isted during the glacial epoch. We now know that the great ice age consisted of different glacial times separated by interglacial times. In glacial times the snow line dropped 3,000 feet or 4,000 feet below its present level In the Alps, whereas in interglacial periods it lay about 1.000 feet higher than . at present. Thus the temperature seems to hare been higher in the interglacial periods than it is now.

The Star of Brazil. The most important cut stone of Brazil Is that called the "Star of the South." which was found by a negro woman in 1853. It was appropriated by the mine owner who gave her in return a pension for life. The stone was sold for $15,000. the new owner depositing it in the Bank of Rio Janeiro and receiving on this security a loan many times greater than the value paid for the gem. The diamond was at length sold for ten times the amount paid. It was finally acquired by a syndicate and cut in oval form at a cost of $2500 by a firm in Amsterdam. An Indian rajah offered more than $500,000 for it. but was refused. A little later it was bought for the gaekwar of Baroda.
