Real Music In Richmond. Richmond will have another May Festival this year. Other towns who can raise the money can have a May Festival If. they wish for there are May Festivals and May Festivals. The usual May Festival held by a email town is only an imported orchestra and a weak chorus with a few second-rate soloists from larger towns. Usually they have never had a chance to practice with each other. The local conductor is the sport of the imported orchestra and this conglomeration is called art. The Richmond May Festival is not like this for it presents the result of continuous practice for months. One might almost say that years of continuous playing together under the same leadership and the same friendly co-operation have been brought together for this occasion. In the same way the chorus is accustomed to singing together under the same leadership. ' The result of this is that it presents an even, and balanced front to the public such as is impossible with those quickly assembled and fly-by-night May Festivals.

Is It any wonder that musical critics are coming from not only all the surrounding cities but from the metropolis centers where such a movement is held remarkable? But the fact that these critics are coming means only that it is a genuine performance. It does not mean that ordinary mortals cannot understand and enjoy the product prese; ted The truth is that such music is the sort which people enjoy. The ordinary May Festival goes largely on reputation and it is supposed that only the cultured can decipher its myst ries. There is none of this pretense about the musical movement in Richmond. It is built on the principle that music is a pleasurable thing, full of meaning, the duty of those who perform it is to give this pleasure and its meaning to the people who come to hear it. Is it any wonder that in addition to the critics who are coming from the other cities that many delegations are coming from Dayton and Indianapolis and all the towns and cities within a convenient radius?

" Ofd time Versatility. Henry Watterson. In an interview In Washington on one occasion, praised the American journalist of the old school.
"The journalist of the old school." ! said Mr. Watterson, with his hearty
laugh, "was remarkable above all things for versatility. He, unlike your college bred journalist of today, never knew when be turned up at the office whether he'd be banded a mop. an opera ticket or a pair of shears, and he was equally at borne with all three."

' 8IR SQUIRE BANCROFT. Sir Squire Bancroft, who was until his retirement some years ago one of the foremost actor-managera of the English stage, was born in London, May 14, 1841. The premature death of his father put an end to his dreams of a college education and at an early age. he was obliged to seek his own livelihood. His inclination led him to the stage, and he got his first engage
ment In Birmingham in 1861. He continued in the provinces for several years, and won much applause as an interpreter of Shakespeare. In 1865 an engagement was offered to him in London by Miss Marie Wilton, the noted actress who later was to become Lady Bancroft. Together the Bancrofts appeared with much success for many seasons, first at the Prince of Wales theater and later at the Haymarket theater, both of which were under their management. Sir Squire Bancroft was the second English actor to be honored with knighthood. Congratulations' to : playwright. 50 years old today. Sir Frederick W. Borden, Canadian statesman, 56 years old today. A Japanese Decoration. Speaking of New Year's celebrations In Japan, the American Traveler's Gazette says: "Before each house entrance stand two pines, on the right a red stemmed one and on the left a black pine. Beside the pine trees stand slender bamboo canes, and the trees are joined above with a festoon of paper fringe and straw rope, ornamented with yellow, bitter oranges, bits of charcoal, lobsters and large bunches of red berries. This decoration Is supposed to bring good luck."
DIET AND HEALTH HINTS Bs DB. T. 9. ALLEN Pood Specialist SIMPLIFYING EVENING MEAL. "In the near future," says Dr. D. H. Kress, in Life and Health, "there will probably be lese cooking of complex dishes and dainties. Sensible men and women are discovering that the foods that require little or no preparation aside from mouth preparation are In every way the best adapted for man's needs. Supercooked foods ferment readily. Better health would be enjoyed if more foods were eaten In their natural state." A good way to' follew this suggestion Is to simplify one meal for some weeks or months snd then another. The evening meal may well be made of prunes, fige and dates or rice with raislne or baked potato and toast.
