MASONIC CALENDAR

Friday, May 10, King . Solomon's iChapter, No. 4, R. A. M. Stated'Con-vocation.

Jack Robinson. A. Foxton Ferguson of Oxford unlrersity. speaking of the old time ballads, said that as most of the public executions took place in some park or market place, where everybody could be present, the onlookers oftentimes amused themselves by singing ballads giving the entire history of the victim, and this is the reason why so many of the old songs are concerned with the hangman and the gallows tree. - Particularly interesting also was his description of the origin of the expression "quicker than you can say Jack Robinson," heard so often in both England and America. It came, be said; from an old ballad about a sailor named Jack Robinson, who returned to Portsmouth, England, to find bis old sweetheart married to another. The poor sailor vowed that he would roam the seas forever, which he set out to do hardly before his friends realized what he was doing. They called after him, but he had gone.

CURIOUS BITS OF HISTORY OUR DEBT TO SPAIN. By A. W. MACY. Americana sometimes forget how much we owe to Spain. Through Columbus, she discovered America. Through Balboa, she discovered the Pacific ocean. Through Magellan, she demon atrated that America Is a continent. Through D Soto, she discovered the Mississippi river. Before the year 1600 England had tried to settle America, and failed. France had tried the same thing, and failed. In 1600 Spain was the only power that disputed with the red msn the possession of the American continent. But after that she failed to maintain her advantage. She had Introduced the slave trade, and bigotry and Intolerance characterized all her actions. More enlightened nation forged head, and she gradually lost her territory, her prestige, her glory and her power in the new world.

Texas reports, almost flippantly and altogether joyously, that every county in which the Hon. Joseph Wildon Baley spoke for Harmon was carried by Wilson. If the Texans be inclined to regard this as a prosperity note and to use it in booming Texas, they will be Justified. When a state f nds itself yawning over the bunk that is Bailey's, or bored by it, untouched and unmoved otherwise by it, that state has come into its political manhood and no longer needs predigested foods or certified milk. The tear compeller, when demonstrating his abilities in the United States senate, but feebly reveals himself. He buds, but he does not blossom. It is only when he faces his fellow freemen on his native soil that the moist Bailey takes off the wrappings of his soul and stands forth in all his oleaginous grandeur. Bailey was Bailey at his moistest in endeavoring to persuade Texans to instruct their delegates for Harmon for Harmon, or, if not for him, for Underwood, or, if not for Underwood, for Clark for any one except Wilson. "O, rayt fellow countrymen" thus the tear compeller "I -have enemies. I do not understand why. I never have been able to understand why God had created snakes, frogs and flies. They must serve a purpose; there must be a reason for them. So there must be a reason for the existence of socialists, republicans, populists and anti-Bailey men." Thus the meek and humble Bailey, standing uncomprehending, but submissive, before the works of Divine Providence. "In this congressional district (any one he happened to be in) are to be found the blackest soil and the whitest people In the world." Thus the exultant Bailey, feeling the throb of pride. "Carnegie is trying to give money away, perhaps in an effort to secure the Lord's forgiveness. If Carnegie wants to make peace with his Maker he must go down upon his knees and ask it; that is one thing that is above price. But to return to Wilson: "He was giving up the office of professor to engage in politics. Can't he make a living? If he can't, he is not fit to hold the office of president. If he can;t make a living for himself, how can he make it for the country?" Thus the unanswerable Bailey; the I-wait-for-a-reply Bailey, the triumphant Bailey. "I used to tell you people that whenever you find a man who looks like he is sorry God made him, he is a socialist or a populist." Thus the mildly jocular but incisive Bailey. This and much more from the now sprinkling, now thundering Bailey and every county in which he spoke for Harmon was carried by Wilson. In a restricted sense Bailey has been a Texas problem. In a larger sense he and his kind have been national problems. When the arts of the demagogue are joined to the principles of the autocrat and the combination is given a seat in the United States senate, there is a national problem. The Bailey type is passing away. The nation is tiring of bunk and tommy rot, of sobs and sob masters, of flag wrappings and tears. The water cart, the thunder sheet, and the glass crash are losing value on the political stage. Chicago Tribune.

CANINE HUMOR. More Marked In Mongrels Than In Dogs With Pedigrees. I generally And, writes a well known English scientist, that mongrel dogs when they happen to be sociable have a keen sense of humor. An aristocratic dog with a pedigree may have some inherited smartness, but has no originality. A common yellow dog with no aneeatry to speak of. who has to gain his living by his wits, could give bim cards and spades at bis own tricks in two lessons. Once I took Into the house out of pity a mongrel yellow dog who insisted on Installing himself at my doorstep and always came back, no matter bow often he was chased away. 1 had at that time a pedigreed water spaniel, and I tried to teach him some tricks when I took him out along a quiet road at times. The yellow dog, who made friends with him, always came along and beaf the water spaniel at his own tricks without training. Then he began to play tricks of his own on the spaniel. When he had a bone he looked out for his comrade, and when he saw bim loping along he would lay the bone in his path and disappear. The spaniel always made for the bone, but the yellow dog, just as he was about to grab it, would dart from bis hiding place and, seizing it, run off with it This happened over and over again, but the high bred spaniel never rumbled to the Joke. TEN KINDS OF MONEY. But Net All of Uncle Sam's Assortment Is Legal Tender. Uncle Sam officially has ten kinds of money gold coins, standard silver dollars, subsidiary silver, gold certificates, silver certificates, treasury. (1S90) notes. United States (greenbacks) notes, national bank notes, nickel coins and bronze colna says the Indianapolis News. While some of tbis paper currency is not legal tender, minor coins are legal tender in small amount Legal tender is so called because in payment of a debt or obligation of any kind It can be forced on the creditor "in full of nil demand." Gold certificates, silver certificates and national bank notes, despite the enormous quantity in circulation, are not legal tender. So far as silver coin Is concerned, only 10 worth of 'halves," "quarters' and "dimes" are legal tender, and. as to nickel and copper coins, only 25 cents can be forced on the creditor. However, with the standard silver dollar there is no limit to the amount to be paid in liquidation of a claim. The creditor can refuse the silver certificate, but when it comes to the "dollar-of the dads" the dollar must be received at Its face value, even if a thousand weigh 58.92 pounds.

Save the Babies. INFANT MORTALITY is something frightful. We can hardly realise that of all the children born in civilised countries, twenty-two pee cent., or nearly one-quarter, die before they reach one year; thirty-eeven per cent., or more than one-third, before they are five, and one-half before they are fifteen t , We do not hesitate to say that a timely use of Castoria would car a majority of these precious lives. Neither do we hesitate to say that many of these infantile deaths are occasioned by the use of narcotio reparations. Drops, tinctures and soothing syrups sold for children's complaints contain more or less opium or morphine. They are, in considerable quantities, deadly poisons. In any quantity, they stupefy, retard circulation and lead to congestions, sickness, death. Castoria operates exactly- the reverse, but you must see that it bears the signature of Chaa. IL Fletcher.
