GRAHAM TAYLOR.
Professor Graham Taylor, one o f
the best known sociologists In America and a pioneer worker In many
movements looking to the uplift of
the masses, was born in Schenectady, N. Y., May 2, 1&61. His education was received at Rutgers college and the Reformed Theological Seminary at New Brunswick, N. J. After graduat- ' ing from the last named institution ho was ordained to the ministry of the Reformed church in 1876, For twelve years . he was pastor of a church in Hartford, Conn., and during a part of the time he was also a professor of practical theology in the Hartford Theological Seminary. For the past twenty years Professor Taylor's activities have been identified chiefly with the University of Chicago, where he has held the chair of sociology. He is the founder of the Chicago Commons, one of the most noted social settlements in the country.

Once more the Indianapolis Star, which has been trying for several moons to straddle the Republican presidential Issue like a tenderfoot astride a Texas cow pony, has grown dizzy and shrieks out that it can no longer maintain its position. It demands that both Mr. Roosevelt and Mr. Taft withdraw from the contest in favor of some candidate that both factions can unite on. But the Star fails to mention where such a paragon can be located. ' Before the Massachusetts primary the country was informed by the Taft campaign managers that the president would sweep the Bay State. They claimed 34 of the 36 delegates, and said there was a good chance of capturing the entire delegation. Mascachusetts was to deliver the knockout blow to Theodore Roosevelt. On the other hand the Roosevelt leaders frankly admitted that Massachusetts was a very doutful state. Tuesday the citizens of Massachusetts voted and Col. Roosevelt carried half of the state's delegation to the Republican national convention. Today the Taft press informs us that the vote in Massachusetts has conclusively proven that neither Mr. Roosevelt nor Mr. Taft can be elected if nominated. Their sole reason for making this assertion is because Mr. Taft only succeeded in securing an even break In a state which it had been claimed was solid for him in a state where every member of a great political machine, headed by the boss of the United States senate, shed coats and vests to help put Mr. Taft "across." In reality the showing Col. Roosevelt made in the Bay State was more remarkable than the way he swept Oregon, Nebraska. Illinois and Pennsylvania. If the Colonel can make such a showing in Massachusetts he can easily win the great west and central west, and the man who can carry those sections of the country can take up his residence in the White House. We hope the Star, which describes itself as a "loyal supporter of . President Taft," in the paragraph, "a loyal supporter of Theodore Roosevelt" will find relief from its agony, providing it does not cost the withdrawal of Theodore Roosevelt from the Republican presidential derby.

CUMOUSBITS OF HISTORY SOME OLD-TIME FASHIONS. : S By A. W. MACY. V In the" fourteenth century it was the fashion to carry silver toothpicks suspended from the heck by a chain. About the end of the seventeenth century magnetlo toothpick were used, to prevent pain in the teeth, eye and ears. In the latter part of the eighteenth century the women of England wore hoop petticoat o large that a woman wearing one occupied the pac of six men. At one time the custom of dotting the face with black patches shaped like suns, stare, creeses, hearts, etc., was very prevalent in England. Soma of the ladle of the court of Loul . XV wore moleskin eyebrow. At one time all English doctor were supposed to carry gold-headed cane a an emblem of authority. During the reigns of William 111, Anno and George I, In England, It wa Illegal for a tailor to make or a man to wear- clothe with any other
kind of button than bras.
; iCepyrlsbt, 11. by Joseph B. Bowles.)
Samuel B. Blythe states in an article appearing in the Saturday Evening Post that he believes William Jennings Bryan is for John W. Kern of Indiana for the Democratic presidential nomination. Blythe says in part: "The man he (Bryan)) is most likely to turn to is John W. Kern, senator from Indiana and candidate for vice-president with Bryan in 1908. Of course, he may have a totally different compromise candidate in view he is the only person who knows; but Kern is by far the strongest possibility. And Kern knows it, too and so do a lot of other people, including Taggart, of Indiana, who Is going to Baltimore at the head of a delegation supposed to be for Gov. Marshall. In reality Taggart is for Kern. He may deny that but he is, just the same. "A situation may easily arise when the contest shall narrow down to Underwood and Kern. It is quite unlikely that either Clark or Wilson who are the leading candidates at this time, will have two-thirds of the delegates when the convention assembles. Then, unless there be a combination of all other delegates representing all the candidates with either Wilson or Clark, it is inevitable that Wilson and Clark will kill each other off. "It may happen, of course, that Clark or Wilson will show such strength on the first ballot or two, that the delegates, wanting to get with the apparent winner, will turn to one or the other and thus assure his nomination; but the chances are that there will come a jab, which will make it extremely difficult for either Clark or Wilson to win, and that a compromise candidate will be selected. There is where Kern Is strong, he being an acceptable man, with nothing against him, no animosities stirred up and with a clean Democratic record; or, if not Kern, some other man of simiar qualifications somebody on whom all can unite. Kern is fully alive to the situation and so are his friends witness Kern's carefully prepared pension speech in the senate not long ago, a palpable bid for future support from the old soldiers in case anything turns up. "Marshall, of Indiana, will have a few other votes than the 30 of Indiana. He may get some others, but Indiana's 30 will about let him out. Tom Taggart controls the delegation. Taggart has no idea that Marshall can be nominated, but he has an idea that Senator Kern can be; and he will use those Indiana delegates with that end in view. They will be trading stock for Taggart, and he is an accomplished and versatile trader let there be no mistake about that. Also, he has a large number of friends among the managing Democrats of the United States. Also, he is on good terras with about everybody who will be active at the convention. If he can so manage it that Kern shall be injected into the situation as a compromise after the first few ballots, provided neither Clark nor Wilson can get the two-thirds, he will find a lot of willing and ready support for his real man, who is Kern; and the endorsement of Marshall by Indiana will keep Kern in the dark horse list."
