'FATHER MEETS SOU

ATI Both Murderers and the Son Will Be Executed Some Time Next Month. . (Palladium Special.) MICHIGAN CITY, Ind., May 2. E. J. Fogarty, warden of the state prison at Michigan City, presided a few days ago over what was probably the strangest meetine that ever took Dlace in his office. It was between Nelson Fritts and his son John, both murderers, the father sentenced for life and the son sentenced to be hanged in June. The father has been In the prison nearly 12 years. He was sentenced from Lawrence county after he had shot and killed an unarmed neighbor, John Feister, in a family feud. The Bon was nine years old at the time, and when 17 he committed a theft for which he was sentenced to the state reformatory. He killed a guard at the reformatory a few months ago, was found guilty by a jury and sentenced to hang. Pending his execution be was taken to the state prison, and had been there a month before the father knew of the crime or that his eon was near him. He had not seen him since the separation nearly 12 years before. An older son, George, who was 11 years old at the time of the murder of Feister, stoned Feister as his father shot him, and he was sentenced for life with the father for being an accessory. He was pardoned by Governor Durbin three years later. Boy Defends His Mother. For a time the father did not believe the man who stood before him vas the little boy he left when he was taken to prison. He bitterly condemned himself for the act that left his family under such conditions. Once he blamed the mother for not having taken better care of the boy. Instantly the boy's expression changed. "Don't blame her," he said. "She had . an awful hard time, you know, with you and George both here for murder, and we suffered a lot of things you don't know anything about. "We were made fun of, and the other families picked on, us, and somebody put In the paper thalwe were a"family of criminals by instinct. It was mighty hard, I tell you, and mother did about the beet she could." To his father the boy said he didn't know who had killed the reformatory guard. "I gueBS I didn't think much," he declared, "I was discouraged and sore and desperate, I guess. You know they kept me four years when my sentence aid only one to 14, and I don't know how much longer they intended to keep me. Then some of the officers, not all of them, talk awful rough to the boys, and it put bitter things into me. I wanted tobacco, too. Noticed Lack of Tobacco. One of the rules at the state reform atory is tnai tne inmates are not permitted to have tobacco and many disturbances have been reported, due to efforts to obtain it. Tobacco is distribtited at the state prison and the warden has said the money spent for that purpose is probably the best spent from the maintenance fund as far as discipline is concerned. Young Fritts is to be hanged in June. The father has implored the warden to intercede to have the sentence commuted, and if it can not be commuted, to have the execution conducted so the father will know nothing of It. The records of the state prison do not contain any account of a case similar to that of the Fritts family. Poor appetite is a sure sign of Impaired . digestion. A few doses of Chamberlain's Stomach and Liver Tablets will strengthen your digestion and Improve your appetite. Thousands have been benefited by taking these Tablets. Sold by all dealers. RECORD OF A GREAT MEDICINE Doctors Could Not Help Mrs. Templeton Regained' Health through Lydia E. Pinkham's Compound. Hooper, Nebraska. "I am very glad to tell how Lydia E.Pinkhaza'4 Vegetable Compound has helped me. For five years I suffered from female troubles so I was scarcely able to do my work. I took doetors' medicines and used local treatments but was not helped. I had such awful bearing down pains and my back was so weak I could hardly walk and could not ride. I often had to sit up nights to Bleep and my friends thought I could not live long. At my request my husband got me a bottle of Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound and I commenced to take it. By the time I had taken the seventh bottle my health had returned and I began doing my washing and was a well woman. -At one time for three weeks I did all the work for eighteen boarders with no signs of my old trouble returning. Many have taken your medicine after seeing what it did for me. I would not take $1000 and be where I was. You have my permission to use my name ii it will aid anyone." Mrs. SUSIK TemFLETON, Hooper, Nebraska. : ThePinkham record is a proud and peerless one. It is a record of constant victory over the obstinate ills of woman ilk that deal out despair. It is an established fact that Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound has restored health to thousands of such suffering women. Why don't you try It if you CeedgTwh m madlrina2

If she do read, let tt be good and wise books, which not one in ten thousand of the kind now called 'novels' is." And yet Carlyle was himself guilty of at least beginning to write a novel. Raphael is a young man not more than a boy, buthe possesses the deftness of touch and an appreciation of coloring that amount to positive genius. In addition to his abilities with the crayon, he has a tne baritone voice and when he sings he illustrates his songs on the big paper pad in front of him with lightning .strokes. The story of "Jpan of Arc," a simple peasant girl who became the deliverer of France, and at last, betrayed by all was burned on the public square on the false charge of heresy and witchcraft, is familiar to all. It is presented by Ringling Brothers in a masterful way, retaining to the end. its pathos, its sentiment and its thrilling dramatic interest. The play begins when Joan, just six teen jears old, comes from her father's pasture at Dormemy at the command of the Archangel St. Michael to the courof Charles VII at Chinon. In the light of a thousand torches she is brought into the presence of the king in the great palace which throngs with the nobles of France. The reception which the king gives to the peas ant girl is filled with impressiveness Ind ; suspense. The second climax of the great spectacle is reached when Joan, dressed in armory, crosses the rifMvat Orleans, and rides at the head of,he French army into the gates of the, beleaguered city. One of her heralds presents himself at the English camp. Respect to the messenger of a reputed sorceress is denied and the herajd is threatened with death.
