ODD FELLOWS CELEBRATE I LODGE EVENT
Ninety-third -Anniversary of the Founding of the Order Was Observed Here Last Evening. (Continued from Pago One.) critical friends were watching them. All this has long since passed away, and the man who does not identify himself with some fraternal or benevolent society is today as much of a curiosity as was the man who did belong in the early days. The credit for this change of sentiment largely belongs to Odd Fellowship. When the community observed the brethren helping each other, administering to the sick and distressed, burying the dead, and in every way elevating human character, all the prejudice quickly died out, and men everywhere were brought to know the worth of such societies as the Odd Fellows. This city now has four subordinate lodges, one Encampment, and two Rebekah lodges. Whitewater Lodge, No. 41, was instituted May 21, 1847. Herman Lodge, No. 199, May 20, 1858. Woodward Lodge, No. 212, November 15, 1859. Richmond . Lodge, No. 254, Maj 15, 1866. Oriental Encampment, No. 28, July 17, 1851. Hermania Encampment, No. 75, July 23, 1869, but was later consolidated with Oriental. Hermania Rebekah Lodge, No. 25, ' July 23, 1869. Eden Rebekah Lodge, No. 30, September 8, 1869. In round numbers the subordinate i lodges now have a membership of S50 j in the city, and the Rebekah lodges Sand subordinate lodges combined, have a membership of about 1100. Thrifty Organization. The Odd Fellows have always been a thrifty order. Go into almost any icity or hamlet and you will not only find an Odd Fellow lodge, but you will find them owning the principal business corner. Here the Odd Fellows are in possession of'the principal corner, worth in round numbers at : least $100,000. It is true the building , Is old but it produces the revenue that permits the lodges to meet their obligations and keep the initiation fee , and dues close to the minimum figure, j During the coming summer it is beilleved the lodge room will be placed on a par with anything of like nature In the city. It is estimated that the lodges not ;only have accumulated valuable proiperty, but have paid out in relief to ithe brethren and their families more ithan $225,000. The membership in Richmond have been twice honored by having Grand Masters elected from among the mem bership. Brother C. C. Binkley, of Whitewater Lodge, wasfGrand Master In 1889 and 1890. ThosiR. Jessup, of j Woodward Lodge,, was likewise hon ored in 1900 ana iui. The record of the past has been clean and progressive, and it Is up tc the brethren of today to try to keep ?up the pace. Don't be surprised it you have an attack of rheumatism this spring. Just rub the affected parts freely with Chamberlain's Liniment and it will iBOon disappear. Sold by all dealers. i Force of Habit. The professional humorist found himself in an open field with a mad bull at his heels. He was running for the fence. . "Shall I make it?" he asked himself. ; Then a thought occurred to him. ,"I guess it's about a tossup," he muttered. As he paused to make a note on his cuff the Inevitable happened. New Uorfc Times. VENICE, Italy, April 27. J. P. Morgan, the great American financier was among the notables who attended the solemn dedication ceremonies that marked the ringing of. the bells of the Campanile of St. Mark's Cathedral for the first time in nine years, during which time the work of rebuilding the famous tower that collapsed in 1902 has continued. The wonderful architecture of the old Campanile has been reproduced in every detail in the new tower. Of the five old bells only one remains, but the four new bells have been recast from the metal of the old damaged ones at the expense of Pope Pius, who is anxiously awaiting a phonograph record of the new chimes of his native Venice. Upper left is J. P. Morgan.' Large photograph shows reconstructed Campanile.
Escaped tho Bullets. Dr. Jnrues Craik. who was Washington's family physician, was Avith the Father of His Country in the expedition against the French and Indians in 1754. and the next year he attended General Braddock in his fatal campaigning. Fifteen yars later, while exploring wild lands in the western districts of Virginia. Dr. Craik encountered a band of Indians led by an aged chief, who informed the physician through au interpreter that he had made a long journey to see Colonel Washington, at whom in the battle of Mouongahela he had fired his rifle fifteen times and ordered all his young men to do the same. In fact. Washington had two horses killed under him that day. and his coat was pierced with four bullets, yet he left tho battlefield unscratched. Wanted Chamber maid, experience unnecessary. Apply Westcott Hotel. ! Thumb and Toe Nails. A lost thumbnail will be generally replaced in five months, and a great toenail requires twice as long. BETTER THAN SPANKING. Spanking does not cure children of bed' wetting. There is a constitutional cause I for this trouble. Mrs. M. Summers, Bos W, Notre Dame, Ind., will send free to any mother her successful home treatment, with full instructions. Send no money, but write her today if your children trouble you it, this way. Don't blame the child, the chances are it can't help it. This treatment also cures adults and aged people troubled with urine difficulties by day or night. Railroal Watches at JENKINS & CO. Mountain Tobacco. In Switzerland a weed called mountain tobacco is smoked in great quantities. It is powdered before using and causes the smoker to become a mental and physical wreck. The natives of South Africa are peculiarly affected by smoking the dried leaves of the camphor plant The smoker trembles with fright at nothing, weeps bitterly and uses all sorts of words which do not in the least express his meaning. The wild dagga. another South African plant, poisons slowly any one using it.

Adopt the Plan. (Continued from Page One.) eight common grade schools. Mr. Fairbanks spoke at the Whitewater, Starr, Vaile and Hibberd schools. while Dr. Coulter ws. taken to the Sevastopol, Baxter, Warner and Winley school buildings. At each of the buildings a large number of patrons and parents of the schools were present to hear the speakers. The teachers In each of the build-j ings worked out the programs for their respective schools. The exercises were opened at each building by singing of patriotic songs and songs apropos to the observance of Arbor Day. At the Baxter school building Dr. Coulter told the children that there are 125 different kinds of trees In Indiana. He declared that It would be
far better to lose iron or other pro- meet In state convention in Harrisducts of this kind than to lose the burg Wednesday to nominate canditrees. He urged the children to exer- dates for Auditor General,' State Treas-
cise care in planting the elms given them, saying that of the 100,000 trees planted last year by school children a large number died, because they were either planted too deep or the roots had become dry before planting. Dr. Coulter emphasized the Importance of trees in regard to health of persons. He said that the general epidemic of yellow fever a few years ago caused people to leave southern cities in large numbers and go to the country and that the country forests were largely responsible for ending the epidemic. At the Vaile school Mr. Fairbanks informed the children that those who planted trees did something which shed blessings on them. He 6aid that it was extremely gratifying to hirn to find that the school board had taken a hand in the observance of Arbor Day and that in order to preserve trees it is necessary to start with the school children. The names of all school children who took trees to plant were kept on record by the school authorities. Moors and Money. Moors are forbidden by their religion to deposit their money in banks. Instead, they hide it in the ground. A Noted Doctor Says, Everyone should use some little antiseptic powder in the shoes. Confining the feet in shoes, is In itself unnatural and causes a moist or smarting sensation. People of refinement now use daily, Allen's Foot-Ease, the antiseptic powder to be shaken into the shoes, and would as soon go without a dentrlfice as without the use of Allen's Foot-Ease. START YOUR

WASHINGTON. D. C. April 27. Massachusetts promises to furnish the most interesting political news of the coming week. Presidential preference primaries will be held there to select all delegates to the coming national political conventions. The primaries in the Bay States will offer a test of sentiment different from any kind. They are called for the sole purpose of electing delegates to the national conventions and they will not affect a single state or county office. They will not even be indicative of sentiment af fecting the governorship, or national convention is eliminated and the Massachusetts delegates to Chicago and Baltimore will not be governed even by a platform. Both Taft and Roosevelt have visited the State several times during the past two months and it is generally admitt ed that the race between them will be close. On the Democratic ballot will annMr the names of Clark and ' Wilson, though it is understood that the Massachusetts delegates at Baltlmore will vote for Governor Foss on the first ballot. The primary results will, determine who is to be second choice of the Massachusetts Democrats. Both Taft and Roosevelt are fighting for the New Hampshire delegates, who are to be" selected by the Republican state convention which will meet Tuesday in Concord. Pennsylvania Republicans are to urer and four Congressmen-at-Large, and to select twelve delegates to the national convention. 'Other events on the Republican calendar for the week will Include the state convention in Tennessee and the state convention In West Virginia.
