NOTHING BUT FISH AT-GAMEBANOUET In the Repast, the Speeches and Discussion, Fish the , Central Idea.
Two hundred followers of the ancient and honorable Mr. I. Walton, gathered last night in the banquet room of Odd Fellows' hall, partook of an excellent repast, listened to a number of short speeches and then smoked big black cigars while discussing matters more interesting (to them) and important than affairs of state. In the repast, in the speeches and in the discussion, fish was the central idea. It was a fishy affair from start to the conclusion and no crowd but one of real-for-sure fishermen will stand for an evening's entertainment which provides but one subject. Fishermen, however, dote on such affairs and are as enthusiastically "fishy" when It is all over as when it begins. True, there were many men there last night who never caught a fish, and there fere others there who have caught few, if any. but who have come to believe
NUSBAUM'S
even themselves that they are real fishermen. There were still others there last night who often catch them and who have authentic and air-tight records in the fishing business. But this rare combination of "nevers." "seldom" and "oftens" had- no trouble in getting along together on such an occasion as last night. Everybody was satisfied with everything and everybody and when the affair broke np tiere was real sadness written on every face. G. W. Miles, o Indianapolis, Indiana's commissioner of fish aad game, was the special guest of honor and the anglers paid handsome tri
bute when he arose to speak. Mr. Miles has great faith in the state of Indiana as a sportsman's heaven. He pointed out last night how much had been done in the past In the way of stocking streams and forests, and he predicted greater achievements for the future. He said that the way In which the state's stock of bass had been increased in a few years and the protection given fish of all kinds in every part of Indiana, had been accomplished through the hearty co-op ration of organisations such aa the Wayne County Fish and Game Protective association, whose guest he was. Mr. Miles said that the fl thing grounds of
Indiana could be made as attractive as those of Wisconsin and other states, and he told of a fancy he had that trout, the rainbow variety, would live and thrive as well In Indiana streams, or some of them, as to the waters of the north. Mr. VI ties even went ao far aa to say that he hoped the next general assembly would increase the appropriation for fish and game protection so that a trout hatchery might be established. He Is now looking for a suitable place for the location of such, and he hinted that Richmond fishermen might be able to potot out to blm a likely place along
some of the streams hereabout. Other addresses were made by Dr. . C 8. Bond. Judge L. C. Abbott and i George R, Williams. .Lawrence Hand-1 ley read an original bit of verse In t which an incident in the fishing ca- f reers of two local lawyers furnished the theme. Charles W. Jordan, secretary of the Commercial club acted as toastmaater at the banquet. Many new members were received into the fold of the association last night and its permanency is assured,
