WAYNE COUNTY FARMERS AD ARBOR DAY
BY ISAAC L. TOTTEN. April 26th. Arbor Day for you, Mr. Farmer, as well aa for those living in the city of Richmond. With a blue pencil, draw a circle around that date on your calendar. And when that day comes be prepared to set out a few trees to show that you are just as keenly alive to the value of trees as any one else. Arrange an arbor day program for the members of your family. Give to each member of the family a certain number of trees which her shall have for his own to be planted carefully and cared for properly. If they lack the information regarding the setting out of the trees, instruct them. If you do not yourself know how; then, of course, it is up to you to find out, and it would be best to get that information at once. Of course it is not necessary to confine the planting of trees to any particular date; but, in setting apart one day of each year as Arbor Day tree planting day one is more apt to bear in mind the importance attached to tree planting. How often do we hear farmers remark, that if they had set out trees when they had first come to a certain place, and continued the practice of occasionally setting out more trees, what a wealth of fruit and nut and valuable timber producers they would now have. The tendency has been more to devast the timber rather than to conserve It. The supply of trees at one time was looked ' upon in about the same way that many farmers looked upon the fertility of the soil. They thought that the supply was inexhaustible; but found out differently. We have no such wild dreams as to think that at some future time there will be a replenishing of the timber; but we have hopes to the effect that the movement now on foot to encourage the planting of treeB and to check the reckless waste of our timber will be productive of good. No man is too old to plant trees. Some farmers say that they have reached an age that if they planted trees now they would get no benefit from them. E. F. Holland of the Texas "Farm
and Ranch" publishing company says of such a man:
"A man so callous to his duty to posterity does no good while living, and does not deserve so grand a monument as a beautiful, fruitful tree to mark his last resting place. "If any man while living has not had the opportunity of planting and caring for at least a few beautiful fruit or other trees he has been truly unfortunate." James Stephen Hogg said : " "I want no monument of stone or marble, but plant at my head a pecan tree, and at my feet an old-fashioned walnut. And when these trees shall bear, let the pecans and walnuts be given out to the plain' people that they may plant them, and make -t his a land of trees." What is more beautiful than a farm home set among an artistic grouping
of trees? To ub a modest little house surrounded by judiciously selected trees that have been properly cared for and kept growing in places selected for them by those with an eye for beauty as well as profit, is more inviting than a modern mansion standing out bleak and cheerless in all its massiveness. There is no place that affords a better opportunity than on the farm for beautifying the home surroundings, yet many of us neglect the opportunity. As one passes through the country, especially on a train where an opportunity is afforded of noting the various farm communities, the general impression is that farmers surely are lacking in things artistic. So many, many homes stand out as an eye sore; because of the barren appearance. "Every land owner, no matter how large or small his tract, should plant trees for shade and ornament, and the trees should be selected for the value of their products. Trees that bear nuts or fruits valuable for food, should be considered first; and second, those that make abundant shade and produce beautiful flowers. If there is room only for a limited number of trees, only those that produce abundant crops of food-nuts or health-giving fruits should be planted." , There Is no greater argument for the planting of trees from an ornamental standpoint than a contrasting of the appearance of a farm home with beau
tiful tree surroundings and the home without the trees. Some homes surrounded by trees are not beautiful. There comes to mind now a farm home near Greensfork that almost gives one the creeps. The house is thrown in perpetual twilight by a mass of taU sighing cedars. We never pass that home, but what
we Imagine that the Inmates of . that house must have faces that appear as though they had been born in a pickle factory. There are extremes in all cases. A. short time ago we were conversing with a farmer who lives ju6t east of town near the driving partk, and he was telling of the good round price he asked for his farm.
He said: "A man came out here from Richmond the other day to buy my place. He asked me the price and I told him, and as one of the reasons for asking the price I did, I mentioned
the fact that the fruit and other trees on my place represented many years dilligent attention, and that It would if figured in dollars and cents, take considerable money to replace them." That man knows the value of trees, and so does many of his neighbors. Only a short distance from this man's farm is another farmstead on which the trees are valued very highly. There is a beautiful grove of sugars; there is a large woods in which are found oaks, elms, walnut, hickory,
beechs, persimmons, paw paws, sugars, and butter-nuts. These trees are all in their natural state, and it certainly is a pleasure to see them. The comprehensive as well as instructive articles which have been appearing in the Palladium those written on the subject of trees by Prof. Thompson are surely timely and will
no doubt bear weight.
Those who have been following these
articles, and we trust that every far
mer has, must now have a better
How Roots Penetrate Hard Ground. The extreme tips of a delicate root
are protected by a Sheath set with
minute scales, which as it Is worn away by friction against the soil Is as constantly replaced, so that it acts as a wedge and the root thread is carried down uninjured. Another aid to penetration lies In the provision whereby the root as it pushes downward in search of nourishment exercises a slightly spiral, screwlike motion which worms its tip into the ground. Another Important agent Is the acid cell sap, which exudes on to and dissolves to some extent the rock or hard soil. This may be tested by placing a small piece of polished marble In a pot in which a plant is set and covering it
with earth. After some weeks the marble will be found to have been cor
roded by the continuous action of this acid.
Why the Spider Was There. When Mark Twain in his early days was editor of a Missouri paper a superstitious subscriber wrote to him saying that he had found a spider in his paper and asking "him whether that was a sign of good luck or bad. The humorist wrote him this answer and printed It: a "Old subscriber Finding a spider In your paper was neither good luck nor bad luck for you. The spider was merely looking over our paper to see which merchant Is not advertising, so that he can go to that store, spin bis web across the door and lead a life of undisturbed peace ever afterward."
There has been great industrial development in Austria in the last eight years and the standard of living has been raised materially .
CURIOUS BITS OF HISTORY A COSTLY BOOK. By A. W. MACY. Strolling through the Bodleian library on day, Lord Klngsborough, known In private life as Edward King, happened to notice an ancient Mexican manuscript. He became so Interested in it that he resolved to devote hie life to the study of Mexican antiquities. For ten years he labored faithfully, and in 1831 the results were published in a monumental work of seven immense volumes, almost two feet square. In these volumes are printed, In vivid colors, facsimiles of the ancient Mexican paintings that are preserved in the great libraries and museums of Europe. In this work he had a definite object, to prove the ancient settlement of Mexico by a branch of th Israelites. But It proved to be his undoing. He spent nearly $150,000 on It, and became heavily Involved In debt. He was thrown Into prison on account of this debt, and died there at the age of forty-two.

SYRUP OF FIGS" FOR INDIGESTION.
. GILIOUSBiil COIISTIPMIOII, Better than castor oil, calomel or cathartics to cleanse your stomach, liver and 30 feet of bowels. Harmless Laxative for men, women and children.
Primitive folks did not need laxatives. They lived outdoors, ate plenty of fruit, and all of their food was coarse. We modern people are different We exercise too little, eat little fruit, and our food Is too ine too rich. We simply can't have our ten yards of bowels clogged up, liver , choked with sour bile and stomach full of foul effete matter and feel well. It means that the food and waste retained in the stomach and thirty feet of bowels ferments decays. The decay creates poisons, gases and acids, and those poisons are sucked into the blood through the very ducts intended to suck in the nutriment. Then we have sick headache, become dull, bilious, tongue coated, nervous, meals don't digest, and we feel miserable all over. So we must make our choice. We must
live like primitive folks, else we must take artificial means to move the excess bile and waste matter on and out of the system. The safest, most harmless and effective stomach, liver and bowel cleanser and regulator for men, women and children is delicious Syrup of Figs, which doesn't irritate, gripe or weaken. Its effect is the effect of fruits. It is composed entirely of luscious figs, senna and aromatics. Don't think you are drugging yourself. Syrup of Figs can be constantly used without harm. Ask your druggist for "Syrup of Figs and Elixir of Senna," and aee on the label that it is prepared by The California Fig Syrup Company. This is the only genuine the old reliable. Refuse, with contempt, the so-called FigSyrup imitations sometimes offered to deceive you.

knowledge of trees than he ever before possessed. Many of the trees that were set out last fall did not withstand the severity of the winter, and it will be necessary to replace them. Because the trees did not live should not discourage any one. not even with fall planting. We all know this has been an exception of a winter. Not the kind of exceptions we hear about along the Pacific coast, but a
real for sure exception. On Arbor Day then, the day on which you have drawn a blue pencil mark around the date on the calendar, set out a few trees. The more impressive you make the importance of that day or the tree set
ting on that day, the more good you
will do; because you will not only ao good by setting out the trees, but you will set the example before your family that will be productive of good at some future time. ' Above all do not neglect the trees after they have been set out. Nothing looks more pitiful than an old crippled up tree that is doing its beBt to produce fruit or nuts. Make arbor day a day for doctoring the old, sick trees as well as for the planting of the young trees. If the trees are set out in the pasture lot be sure to provide some kind of protection for them from the stock. A young tree cannot thrive when disturbed by the rubbing and other damage that the 6tock may do to it. Some one has said: "The man who owns land and will not plant trees Is as Bhort-sighted and ambitlonless as a clam located on a hard bottom in a stream of clear water."
