KEYSTONE PRIMARY
IS HELD SATURDAY
Big Business Forces, Led by ' Penrose, Are Supporting Taft Candidacy. (National News Association) PHILADELPHIA, April 12. Tomorrow will witness the opening of the bitterest primary fight in the history of Pennsylvania and many are the predictions that are today being made of ilts result From Pittsburg, the stronghold of iWilliam Flinn, who is in charge of the iRoosevelt forces in the state, word 'has zeen received today claiming that 'the Colonel will sweep the state, electling at least half of the 64 district delegates to the National Republican convention in June. And from the Taft iheadquarters a statement has been issued conceding a possible eight deleigates to the former President and claiming the remaining 68 for Taft. The Roosevelt faction base their claims on two things. One is the fact Hhat Pennsylvania gave the Colonel a (majority of plurality of 505,000 in 1904 land the other is the strenuous efforts
Imade by Flinn, a wealthy politician, iwho is said to have spent money like (water in the interests of Roosevelt, to (swing the voters from the Republican (machine controlled by Senator Boise Penrose. Claims of Taft Men.
The Taft men base their claims to
victory chiefly on the strength of the
party machine, the activity of . the business men of Pennsylvania, headed by John Wanamaker, and the popu
larity of the "conservative" campaign
I pushed by the present incumbent of 'the White House. ' The selection of delegates will be made through primaries held in 32 i congressional districts which will each 'elect two delegates to the Republican 'National convention at Chicago in 'June. These 64 delegates will be sup-
large which will be selected by the Pennsylvania state convention on May
jlet. This will make a total of 76 Republican delegates, the largest body 'outside of the New York State delegation, sent to the Republican National cenvention. The importance of the primary result ia believed by politicians to be more far-reaching than any pre-nomi-nation state fight yet made by either prospective candidate. This situation is brought about by the favoritism shown Roosevelt in his last Presidential campaign and the fact that the Roosevelt supporters have made a fight in every respect as vigorous as that of the machine Republicans, thus

making it certain the results of the contest tomorrow will show in a great measure the true sentiment of the people of a Roosevelt state with regard to the choice for the Republican nomination. Despite the strong fight being made for Roosevelt by sevefal Influential papers and the money spent in advancing his propaganda, however, the situation on its face seems to be all against the Rough Rider, owing to the power or "Boss" Penrose's machine. The Union League club, of this city, an organization whose membership includes some of the most influential business men in the state, recently endorsed the Taft campaign, entering politics for the first time since the civil war. The regular Republican machine has been active in whipping its men into line and the Taft delegates throughout the state show that men of prominence have hastened to join forces with the Taft Republicans. The districts where the fight will rage most fiercely are in Philadelphia and Pittsburg. These cities comprise ten districts and elect twenty national delegates, twelve from the former and eight from the latter.
