The Association of Amer ican Advertisers has exmini and certified to the oircu'atioBef this pablicauoo. i hi ngnrM i urn ontaiaed in tha Association's re nlw mrm aniarani.ed. Association of American Advertisers ) 169. Whitehall Bldg. N. Y. City ( Heart to Heart Talks. By EDWIN A. NYE. R. A. LONG. BENEFACTOR. I am going to give you some rather unusual advice. Make money. ' Make It honestly. Make it and give it away. Say what you will, money as our society is constituted at present is a tremendous power for good as well as evil. There's R. A. Long. lie is a Kansas City millioniare who has made bis money largely in buying timberlands. And he is giving it away with lavish hand. He helps to endow colleges, sends out missionaries and gives to churches and charities. For instance: When it was proposed to build a hospital in Kansas City, R. A. Long said. "Let's make It one of the largest and best in the world." And he went down in his pocket and gave about half the proposed cost of the big institution. Said Mr. Long, "I make it one of the conditions that one-third of the beds of this hospital shall be free to the poor." Is not that fine? Make money honestly and give it away because of the world's need. Colleges, churches, hospitals, homes for the friendless and little children, humane societies, night schools, associated charities all these worthy causes make an appeal that only may be met with money. Make ' money honestly and give it away because you can thus multiply yourself. One time E. A. Nye is just . E. A. Nye. But one thousand times It. A. Long is a thousand II. A. Longs. And a thousand R. A. Longs is a thousand times E. A. Nye and then some. , Do you see? Make money honestly and give it away because of the happiness it will bring you. We are all of us shut up to this limitation. To be happy we must give, either of self or money, and the more we give the happier we may be. He who is stingy cannot be happy. He is not built that way. Nor can the generous man who sees the world's need and is unable to supply it be as happy as be would like to be. Make money honestly. Make it and give it away to the cause that needs because when you lie down in your long, last sleep ' All you can hold In your dead cold hand Is what you have given away. "My little son had a very severe cold. I was recommended to try Chamberlain's Cough Remedy, and before a email bottle was finished he was as well as ever," writes Mrs. H. Silks, 29 Howling Street, Sydney, Australia. This remedy is for sale by all dealers. CURIOUS BITS OF HISTORY THE REWARDS OF TREASON. By A. W. MACY. Benedict Arnold fared well at the hands of trio English after he turned traitor to the American cause. He received in return for his treason a commission as brigadier-general in the British army, and thereafter he fought against his former comrades. When he went to England he was presented with $30,000, and given a pension of $2,500 a year for his wife and one of $500 a year for each of his children. Some time later the king gave him a grant of acres of land in Canada. He remained in the British army until his death, twenty years after his desertion of the American cause. , But not all his rewards were of a pleasant nature. Of course the American people execrated him, and even his fellow British officers despised him. In avenging some of their insults he became involved in a duel, fell Into debt, lost his fortune, and ended his days in poverty. It Is said that he died in the uniform of an American major-general, which he had preserved.

Let's Investigate FirstNot Afterward. What citizen of yayne County knows that $10,000 ought to be spent for a new roof for the Court House? The county commissioners wish to stop the leaks in the roof which are imperilling the walls and fresco of the building. A slate roof will cost $10,000 they say.

It has always seemed somewhat unfair to us to blame or praise a county commissioner. How many of us ever take the trouble to investigate the work of those gentlemen? Several of them have tried very hard to obtain and retain their offices others have complained about the poor pay they get. But for all that all the people out in the county are far away from them and the people in town forget or do not care whether there is a commissioner's court in the dreary wastes of our half million dollar edifice.

Why is is that the roof leaks? Is it because a previous generation did not look after its affairs? It seems to us that this roof ought to be raised and a little light allowed to gleam both in and out. Our reason for saying this is first, because the exepnditure by the county of $10,000 is a good deal of money to spend without investigation. For instance there are the wards in the new detention hospital for the insane. After a controversy pro and con as to whether this should be built after the need for it was thorougly demonstrated behold the next thing we learn is that after it is built that more money will have to be appropriated before the county can get any use out of it. Why? Because the specifications did not call for many things which should have been included. There was not a padded cell so the insane will have to be shackled to keep them from hurting themselves the walls were not plastered because the specifications did not call for it. The county commissioners said that they would have to pay for it because it lived up to the specifications. But the county commissioners approved the specifications originally. The county commissioners should take the suggestion that there be an investigation of the court house roof business before they spend $10,000 so that everybody shall understand the conditions. For instance, why is it that the tile roof cannot be repaired? Are there just a few broken tile? If so can these be replaced for less than $10,000? Are these leaks all over or simply at the eaves? Is this the fault of snow? If so have not all sorts of roofs leaked under these conditions and will a slate roof be any better than a tile one and so on?

We do not pretend to know any of these answers without as thorough an investigation as should be made. But the investigation ought to be made, not alone by the county commissioners but by the citizens of Wayne County themselves.

It is time that we demand efficiency in addition to honesty in the conduct of public business. It is not alone the dishonest man who causes leaks in the public funds for more often it is inexact knowledge and too hasty and casual investigation which causes it. The case of the insane detention hospital is an example of this and such examples are far more frequent than grafters or defaulters.

PETRIFIED TREES. Jtf The "Stone Forest" One of California's Natural Wonders. California, among many other natural wonders, contains a "stone forest" This is located in Sonoma county, only a few miles from the little resort of Callstoga Springs. This "forest" consists of a great many petrified trees, all of which are prostrate. In respect to the great number of petrified trees and their immense size, the California "stone forest" surpasses that of Arizona. Strange to say. very little Is known about these wonderful Sonoma county petrifactions so far as the general public is concerned. Many of these trees are of enormous size. The famous "Queen of the Forest" is a prehistoric redwood about eighty feet long and nearly twelve feet In diameter. It has been broken in several places, and these breaks are as clean as if cut off with a saw. A tree has grown up through one of the breaks and has attained quite a large size. Another giant tree known as the "Monarch" lies near by, which is almost ninety feet long and is without a break. This tree is a fir. and averages ten feet in diameter. Not far away is another giant son of the forest a redwood that is about sixty feet long and nine feet in diameter. This tree is broken Into many hundreds of pieces, yet it retains its shape almost perfectly. Scattered about for the area of several acres are nany other pieces of petrifaction. So perfect has been the transmutation into stone that the grain of the wood still remains very clear, and the variety of the tree may be easily determined. Scientific American. 'THIS DATk

Of all the beauty recipes in my scrap book, here are two that have always given complete satisfaction: Wrinkle Remover One ounce powdered saxolite, dissolved in 'z pint witch hazel. Use as a wash in fa pint witch hazel. Use as a wash lotion. It brings instantaneous results. Face Peeler Pure mercolized wax, applied at night like cold cream, only not rubbed in; wash off in the morning. It causes the worn-out scarf skin to come off in tiny, almost invisible flakes, a little each day, until the fresh young under-skin is wholly in evidence. The beautiful rose-tinted complexion thus obtained is not to be compared with one made over with cosmetics. An ounce of the wax is sufficent. The Theaters

AT THE MURRAY. The Murray is good this week. Everyone should see the headliners, "Jewell's Manikins," one of the most elaborate and interesting of puppet shows. i Puppets are invested with a certain romance. Their operators figure, to make something of a bull. In various well known novels and, of themselves, have a sort of fascination. In this elaborate spectacle there is much variety and scenic effectiveness, tue "Death of Cleopatra." being remarkably realistic and skillfully managed. It is well worth the seeing. Theatrically considered, one of the best sketches seen at the Murray this season is the one on the boards this week, a caricature of the suffrage movement, cleverly presented by Cora Simpson & Company, and replete with laughable lines and situations. A man, running for mayor, finds that a woman who is his most dangerous opponent is his wife. Later it develops she was merely doing this to corral votes from his other political rivals. While the sketch is a caricature it is not exaggerated In presentation and therefore highly diverting. The finale, while tpigrammatically effective "The suffragist would rather raise the devil than raise children," is, in "Clean Up the Bowels and Keep Them Clean" There are many remedies to be had for constipation, but the difficulty is to procure one that acts without violence. A remedy that does not perform b y force what should be accomplished by persuasion is Dr. Miles' Laxative Tablets. After using them, Mr. N. A. Waddell. 315 Washington St., Waco, Tex., says : "Almost all my life I have been troubled with constipation, and have tried many remedies, all of which seemed to cause pain without giving much relief. I finally tried Dr. Miles" 1-axative Tablets and found them excellent. Their action is pleasant and mild, and their chocolate taste 'makes them easy to take. I am more than glad to recommend them." "Clean up the bowels and keep them clean," is the advice of all physicians, because they realize the danger resulting from habitual constipation. Do not delay too long, but begin proper curative measures. Dr. Miles' Laxative Tablets are a new remedy for this old complaint, and a great improvement over the cathartics you have been using in the past. They taste like candy and work like a charm. A trial will convince you. Dr. Miles' Laxative Tablets "are sold by all druggists, at 25 cents a box containing 25 doses.
