CHARLES LORINQ JACKSON.
Professor Charles Loring Jackson,
who has resigned from the Harvard
university faculty after 44 years of continuous service, was born in Bos

department of Harvard, taking his A.
B. degree with the class of 1867. Two
years later he received his A.M. de

which he served as assistant instruc
tor" in chemistry. From 1873 to 1875 he '. studied chemistry in Berlin and
at Heidelberg. All of Professor Jacfc
son's many years of service at Harvard has been spent as a teacher of chemistry, where he has risen from the rank of assistant instructor in 1868 to the Erving professorship of chemistry, which he is to give up when his resignation takes effect next September. He is a member of some of the leading scientific societies in America and a corresponding member of similar societies in Great Britain and Germany.

There is one feature of dog muzzling which throws a side light on human nature. Some of the dogs that have been muzzled have been disfnvaroA in an almost ntnrvinc rnnditlnn Ownprs of doers who do not '
feed them but who make a practice of turning them out to forage arec: the sort of men who do worse things. Is it such a far cry from neglect- i ing dogs to mistreating children and women ? " There has been a good deal of dog shooting on account of fixe'neg-'. lect of masters of dogs. This is supposed to punish the master-- ( . But how much does it punish the master? -. - - A lot of this dog madness is directly traceable to lack of -water and i decent treatment. f The dogs are probably better offdead than in the ownership of such fellows but wouldn't a day in a cell without food and water help some of these men to realize how their dogs feel?
1500 Progressives. Earlier" in the year a progressive organization of shop men and farmers was organized in Richmond wit'fetrength which surprised reactionary politicians the state over, .jfowa,. called the "Hoosier State Progressive League." The reactionary politicians announced that this movement was spasmodic anf onTynad for its purpose the selection of a progressive for PrestdentSFpaftles. Others announced that the organization was merely a LaFollette organization a part of that senator's personal macMn'ef"" ' It would have been enonS:3Bli1rrganization had merely been any of these things but in the i,B.teret of truth the organization never went on record as in favor pf anbn man for president, wisely waiting to see which 'party wouMputTap the most progressive presidential and other candidates. The members of the organization are interested in what Woodrow W4lsoncalls "Men and Measures" the real progressive movement. ' - -i In what position would 'the candidates for office, for congress to tt ' - state and legislative offices find themselves if the Hoosier State Progressive league should call on them for their ideas on progressive legislation? A force representing 1500 votes is not to be neglected.

DIET AND HEALTH HINTS By D. T. I. ALLEN Food Specialist
FEEDING A CHILD. That defective nutrition is the cause of the failure of many children In school work and of truancy, la the opinion of Chas. A. Love, truant officer of Aurora, III. "Hundreds accomplish little beyond the fifth grade because they obtain little nourish-. ment from what they eat and in many instances tuberculosis and other diseases take the Elves that have so weak foundation." This Is the result of long observation. Children should have simple, plain, easily digested food. The habit of quiet, slow thorough mastication should be taught s more important than the three R's. No eating between meals should be allowed; little drink at meals; no flesh meat, nor fresh white bread, pastry or cake, and only good candy. The natural appetite for sweets should be satisfied with sweet fruits. It is surely as Important
I to feed .children, properly, as-
calves or norses or, pigs, ana'
general principles are the same-. Tea, coffee and tobacco and overmuch cane sugar should be ex- : eluded."..
Wisconsin has just had its presidential preference primaries. On both tickets the progressives won hands down. Wilson was victorious on" the Democratic ticket LaFollette won on the Republican ticket. Where the people had the choice it was a progressive who won on each ticket. It is a greater victory for LaFollette and the Republican progressives that Wilson won. It shows that the temper of the people is progressive and that they voted for LaFollette for that reason. What will it be in Ohio, the state which bears the proud title of "Mother of Presidents?" Will the Taft forces rejoice If Wilson secures delegates or will they say "If you can't vote for Taft let's have Harmon delegates?" Where do you think the broken but still potent bi-partisan machine of Boss Cox and "Charley" Taft will line up behind Wilson and Taft? As long as two years ago we suggested that those reactionaries who pretend friendship to Mr. Taft were planning to "put up Taft and beat him with Harmon." This would be impossible if there were a real primary in every state.
FERRYING THE TRAIN.
One of the River and Harbor Sights of New York City. One of the sights of the harbor familiar enough to those acquainted with the water front, but of never failing interest to the waterside strolling stranger, is the big railroad ferryboat that carries the Boston-Washington through trains around Manhattan between Mott Haven and Jersey City, and apparently this ride is as interesting to the people on the boat as the boat is to the people on the shore. They just run the whole train on this boat, and then In fair weather the passengers get out to stretch their legs and take in the view. As the big boat comes along with the cars of the train aboard seen projecting out forward and aft on deck from under the hoods you see the passengers standing forward for their eight or ten miles water ride down the East river and up the north, or vice versa, through all the varied river traffic close at hand, while shoreward they have that marvelous view of the lower city. The boat is one of the city's notable river sights, and the trip on the boat itself and the view from its deck are still as wonderful as ever to the unaccustomed traveler. New York Sun.
DEAD SEA WATER.
In Germany a government engineer
has devised a new system of canal traction, rails laid on the bottom of a
canal engaging rollers on the bottom of a boat, which can be driven by either steam or electrictiy.
Its Buoyancy Not So Great as to Make Swimming Impossible. In Jerusalem ridiculous stories ar told of the impossibility of bathing in the Dead sea. and it is even said by the superstitious that no animals or vegetation can exist near it. The truth is that if Palestine belonged to any other power but Turkey the northern shore of the Dead sea would probably become a popular bathing station and health resort, as the chloride of magnesia which enters so largely into the composition of the water would be found to have medicinal and curative properties, says the Zion Herald. So far as swimming is concerned, the excessive buoyancy of the water of the Dead sea simply renders it difficult for the swimmer to make much headway, but if care be taken not to allow the salt water to get into the eyes a swim is both feasible and enjoyable. The Dead sea contains 25 per cent of solid matter and is. bulk for bulk, heavier than the human body. In a ton of water from the Caspian sea there are 11 pounds of salt, in the Baltic 18 pounds, in the Black sea 28 pounds, in the Atlantic 31 pounds, in the English channel 72 pounds, in the Mediterranean S3 pounds, in the Red sea 93 pounds and in the Dead sea 187 pounds. Bird Eggs, Chocolate Eggs, Cocoanut Eggs, Butter cream Eggs, Decorated Eggs, all good eating. You get them at Price's. mar29-30 apr 3-4-5
YOUR. BACK YARD. ' - Do you remember or have yoa heard ItDr. Conwell's lecture on "Acres of Diamonds 7'
Conweil tells this story: j
A man of South Africa wandered for several years, prospecting over veldt and kopje, searching for a diamond mine. Discouraged by his failures, he settled down in a house. One day while digging in his back yard be came across a find which on development resulted in the discovery of a rich mine of diamonds. And the moral? Plainly enough, what Conweil makes it the need of conserving and using all your resources, however small. "In your back yaru." says the lecturer, "are acres of diamonds." While the prospect of finding literal diamonds in your back yard is rather farfetched, nevertheless there is wealth to be had. Take a look at it. Have you made of your back yard a dumping place for refuse, cluttered it with offensive rubbish? If so clean it up and give it a chance. Change it from a liability to an asset. Learn from the Japanese. When the Jap comes to this? country he is amazed at the neglect of our premises. In Japan every inch of the little holdings, however small, is cultivated. The front yards blossom as the rose, and the back yards grow half the living of the household. Do you waste your back yard?
Properly tended, when the spring comes it has big possibilities of garden stuff. Even a small space is worth while. A few square feet will bring forth nn astonishing quantity of table delicacies. Besides There is the possibility of beautifieation. A few cents expended for profuse blooms like sweet peas and a variety of climbing vines will do much to hide ugly surroundings and trans
form your back yard into a bower of beauty. There's wealth in your back yanJ if you will dig for it. We Americans are so accustomed to big fields and large acreage that we are only just beginning to appreciate what may be done by intensive cultivation of small areas. Dig in your back yard.

Woman s Pcnver

Women's most glorious endowment is the power to awsken and hold the pure snd honest love of a worthy man. When she loses it end still loves on, no one in the wide world can know the heart agony she endures. The woman who suffers from weakness and derangement of her system, soon loses her personal, magnetism. Her general health suffers and she loses her good looks, her amiability and
womanly charm. Dr. R. V. Pierce, of Buffalo, N. Y., with the assistance of his itaff of able physicians, has prescribed for and cared many thousands of women. He has devised a successful remedy for woman's ailments. It is known as Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription. It is a positive specific for ; the wekneses and disorders peculiar to women. . Shut Off All the Power When Yeu Quit Work at Night.
It is a great thing to learn to shut ; off the mental steam when you quit work, says Orison Swett Marden in Success Magazine. What would you think of a factory manager who would leave all of his power turned on after the operators had left the factory, the delicate machinery running everywhere, pounding Itself to pieces, grind
ing out its delicate bearings without producing anything? Many of ns do not turn off our mental power after we are through producing or creating for the day. We carry our business home, take it to bed with us. think, plan, worry and waste previous energy in all sorts of ways, in superfluous thinking, foolish worrying that produces nothing, but grinds out the exquisite mental machinery and unfits it for the next day's work. It is a great art to learn to shut off power when through our day's work, so that we can oil our mental machinery, refresh our minds and recuperate ourselves, so that we can go to the next day's work completely reinvigorated. Many men seem to think that they are accomplishing something if they keep their minds on business even when not at work, but they really ac
complish less than nothing because they are wasting precious mental en
ergy, the power for concentration, the vigor, the focusing of the mind, which is Imperative for creating purposes.
ABDUL HAM1P STILL ALIVE
Abdul Hamid is ave! The former sultan is in Salonica and has not been secretly conveyed to Constantinople. Those are the replies to two recently circulated reports which have told of the former sultan's demise and of his having been spirited away during the night to the capital. The latter report was merely founded upon the passage of a train full of munitions, concerning which quite special precautions were taken. If you want to set yourself a dimcult task it is in going to Salonica and trying there to find out some details concerning the physical condition" and mode of life of the deposed sultan, who for so many years was the political chess player who kept the diplomatists of Europe busy, and who was so skilled In the game that he usually saw 20 moves ahead, while the ambassadors at Constantinople saw but two or three.

An Incident That Showed His Grasp of Military Detail. The parents of a young soldier, who was a private in a Prussian cavalry regiment during the Franco-Prussian war, became very anxious about him. Several battles had been fought and they had received no news of their boy. After some hesitation the father went to see General von Moltke and after a long wait was admitted to the presence of the great field marshal. "What Is your business?" asked the general. "Use as few words as pos
sible." The visitor explained that he wished to know the fate of his son, a private in a certain regiment. Moltke smiled, but not unkindly, and drew forth a square of cardboard covered with dots, lines and crosses of various colors. "This line," he said, "indicates the line of march of your son's regiment. These dots mark the distance of each forced march. Tomorrow morning at 7 o'clock the regiment must be at this point here. Take note of the situation." He said no more, and the interview ended. Long before the hour named the father was at the point indicated on the map. Just before 7 o'clock the trumpets of the advance guard were heard in the distance, and precisely at the hour the father saw his son. London Telegraph.

DANGERS OF FAT HOW FAT EFFECTS THE LIVER IJVER Next to the heart
there is no organ of the body more susceptible tfl an abnormal increase of fattytissue, than the
liver. When the liver becomes too fat, its action is impeded, allowing the fat-making foods to make more fat than is needed for normal symmetry. The liver, clogged with excess fat, becornes inactive, and, from disease, the nature of the organ undergoes a 'change. Constipation, headaches, biliousness and similar local disturbances of the system are not the least of the fat man or woman's troubles, for the rolls and layers of fat on all portions of the body increase, clogging other organs, paving the way to obesity. All this can be avoided, if the proper remedy is resorted to at once. Nothing ever discovered for the removal of fat Is so effective as the famous Marmola Prescription. However, from the same high authority, came Marmola Prescription Tablets, containing all the elements of this sure, harmless Prescription and offering a more convenient means for reducing to normal weight at the rate of 10 to 16 6z. a day, without dieting, exercise or resulting wrinkles and flabbiness.
