SCOTT FINDS COAL III THE AHTART1C Remarkable Discovery Reported in an Account of Explorations. (National News Association) LONDON, April 3. Privations and lair-breadth escapes from death, in distinct contrast with the easy journey of Captain Raold Amundsen, marked the South pole dash of Capt. Scott's British expedition, according to dispatches received here from Akaroa, N. Z., by the Central News and published today. However, none of the party had been lost up to the time the Terra Nova sailed northward from McMurde sound and Lieut Bennett, commander of the ship, brought news from the Antarctic that makes it almost a certainty that Scott will be successful in his quest. ; Already the scientists in the party have made the most important discoveries ever yet accomplished within the shadow of the south pole. They found coal and fossils, the first ever located ip. the Antarctic. The Terra Nova will sail' south in November to pick up the two parties left behind. 'One of these, headed by Scott in person, planned to push on to the pole; the other commandered by IJeut. Campbell is in South Victoria land, doing scientific work. Started on His Dash. Captain Scott started on his depot establishing dash on Jan. 25, 1911. The .party consisted of 12 men, 8 ponies 'and 2 dog teams. The party met' with a. series of blizzards which killed one of the ponies and several of the dogs. On Feb. 16, having reached latitude 79.12 degrees, the party was forced to turn back. On the trip back the party ran Into a crevasse on White Island. A dog '.ie&xa wasviwallowed up and Scott and Meares, a driver, had narrow escapes. They were saved by clingiug to a natmral bridge which crossed the crevasse. - Inclement weather continued. There were, heavy falls of snow, and high winds which piled the snow into enormous drifts. Travel was both tedious and dangerous. The ice floes were full of holes and extreme caution had to 'be used to avoid these. The party finally arrived at Hut Point, the winter camp, after adventures and hardships which none of the party escaped. Up to April 11, the temperature at Hut Point continued at 40 degrees below zero. With indefatigable energy Capt. Scott and other members of the party continued making trips away from the base, despite the hardships of storm and the dangers of travel. Scott said that the winter night began with the setting of the sun, May 2, whereas Capt. Amundsen in his narrative said that the sun set April 22. The temperature during the winter remained from 40 to 50 degrees below zero. The winter was spent in doing scientific work. There were lectures and the men played football for diversion. The final dash started from winter camp November 2, 1911. This was nearly a month later than the Amundsen start. Photographers snapped pictures constantly and a moving picture machine was operated. Later they will be produced in the first moving pictures taken in the Antarctic. Scott's last message was sent back January 3, 1912, when he was 150 miles from the
pole and still pushing on. As a Spring blood purifier, stomach cleanser, blood regulator, Hollister's Rocky Mountain Tea is recognized the greatest, surest, best. You need it now. They are always redeemed, however, as failure to do so means family disgrace. The turtleback shaped tombs, usually located on a hillside facing the "water, are elaborate affairs of stone and cement, and their cost and upkeep often bankrupt the family. OBITUARY Providence has entered unannounced and has wrought a change in our midst which no influence can efface. We cannot understand. Our only recourse is to trust and not to be afraid. The Providence who gave Martha Dickson-Gault as a mother to her children and a wife to her husband and who so early recalled her to Himself will continue to guide through the way which is now so dark and lonely. The loss suffered by this saddened family cannot be repaired. No children ever knew a parent who was richer in motherly wisdom. No husband ever had a more devoted and sympathetic helper. Martha has left to her children, her husband, and to all who knew her intimately a priceless legacy; an example of a life that for many years has been scarcely free from pain or from a sense of physical weakness but the dominant note of which was one of hope and good cheer. There was nothing sordid in her composition. She was satisfied with nothing short of the highest ideals as guides and supports for herself and her children,. Such a character is a source of strength. It demands our consideration and emulation. In our sorrow we are grateful for its example. To its kind influence and to the Great Character who made it possible we commend these children and their brave father, the brothers and sisters and their aged and only surviving parent, upon whose infirmity this sorrow falls with doubled weight. Martha Avis Dickson-Gault was born on Sept. 12, 1869, in Canfield, Ohio, and departed on March 31, 1912, the daughter of Camuel Dickson who survives in Canfield and Susanna Ranck of Wayne county, this state, who died a few months after Martha's birth. The early part of her life was spent with the family of her grandfather Mr. George Ranck, in Wayne county. On Dec. 10, 1896 she was united in marriage with George Wilford Gault, of Mahoning county, Ohio, and resided in that county for a number of years. She became a member of the Presbyterian church in Jackson, Ohio, at the age of 29 years. After her removal to Richmond with her husband and family in December 1904, she became a member of 'the Reid Memorial United Presbyterian church. She is survived by her husband and three children: Ralph, aged 13; Marjorie, aged 8; and Robert, aged 5; by her' father, Samuel Dickson, who resides in Canfield, Ohio; and the following brothers and sisters. Mrs. W. A. S. Dickson of this city, G. Alexander Dickson of Lyons Station, Fayette county, this state J William J. Isn't it a queer language? A New Tork policeman saw a woman in the street with a carpet and a stick. "Beat it," he'harshly commanded. Whereupon the woman struck, the carpet with the stick and the policeman arrested her for violating a street ordinance. The judge heard the woman's story and smiled. "Beat it." he said to her, and this time she understood and hurried away. Cleveland Plain Dealer. Right In His Line. CORAL REEFS.
They Can net Form In the Line of a Freeh Water FlowCoral reefs surround many of the islands In the Pacific. They protect the lowlands from the washing of the wtfves, and the still waters Inclosed by them are the only harbors of refuge for ships. The reefs themselves furnish the greatest peril to navigation, and If there were no inlet through which a Tessel coald enter their protected circle they would be a danger and nothing else. But almost every reef has such an Inlet. It is a necessary result of the laws under which the forces of nature work. To understand this we must see how these refs are formed. Chemically the reef corals are almost pure carbonate of lime, the substance of ordinary limestone and marble. The reef grows as the shell of the oyster or of any other shellfish grows. It is Itself the common and undivided shell of innumerable polypi, or minute insects, which are being reproduced and are dying In successive generations. These tiny beings get all their living from the waters of the sea. It is from this source also that they derive the salts of lime from which they secrete the bony structure that remains after the animal is dead. The coral polypi cannot live in fresh water. Their 'food supply is brought to them by the waves and currents of the sea. As a result, it is found that directly opposite the mouth of a stream from the island the reef does not grow. There will be the inlet to the inclosed waters. Harper's Weekly. CARD OF THANKS. Fields, Hebrew character comedian and LaAdelia present a clever comedy sketch entitled "The Janitor and The Maid" or the Actors' Rooming House. It is a medley of dialogues, monologue and dancing all of which is good, the lady being by a large margin the best toe dancer ever seen here. Bohee and Hyers give severih operatic numbers in a most pleasmg manner. The one lady is possessed of a clear soprano while the other one has a clear contralto voice, not unsimilar to that of a man. Her rendition . of the "Toreador" is especially good. The feature act is Salambo and Olivette the wonder workers in a series of electrical experiments. This is one of the biggest novelties ever here and must be seen to be appreciated. May Irwin. . Letters of marque and reprisal, as they were called, were flrsf issued in the time of Edward 1. to give leave to retaliate beyond the inarches or limits of a country for wrongs suffered at the hands of a power nominally at peace. In this finit instance they were aimed at Portugal. About 100 years later two Hanse towns in Mecklenburg, wishing to relieve their prince, who was beleaguered in Stockholm, issued letters of marque thieves' letters, as the sufferers called them to all the rascals of the Baltic authorizing them to victual the besieged city. This done, they turned themselves into a confederacy of sea robbers known as Victualing brothers, or St. Vltalius' brothers, and rendered the Scandinavian seas unsafe for half a century. Reduced. MODES OF TRAVEL From the Jaunting Car te the Modern Electric Railway. The first jaunting car was established in Ireland in 1513 by a Milanese, Carlo Bianconi, who settled In Dublin and drove every day to Caher and back, charging twopence a mile. From this small beginning in 1837 he had established sixty -seven conveyances, drawn by 900 horses. The extension of modern manufacturing towns and cities demanded still greater conveniences, which were supplied at first by the omnibus lines, which up to 1SG0 were the chief means of urban and interurbnn transportation. To these succeeded the street railroad, traversed by cars drawn by one or more horses, and these in turn' became wholly inadequate to meet the demand of the suburban districts. The cable car, drawn by underground cable, was the next innovation, but this about 1SSO to 1S90 was supplanted by the electric trolley lines, and these again were supplemented In many cities by elevated and subway lines in which the cars were propelled by electricity supplied by a third rail. This latter device has already been applied to extended lines of railroads, and it Is not unlikely that the present century will witness the electrification of most of the railroad lines in thickly settled countries. Moral Don't Be a Goat. The goat while out browsing thoughtlessly stopped and rubbed Lis headin the way that goats have against the side of the house of the wolf. Out rushed the tenant and fiercely upbraided the hairy butter. "But I'm quite sure," said the latter, "that I've done your house no harm. Besides. I saw the elephant stop here only yesterday and scratch his back against your dwelling in a way that almost overturned it. And you didn't say a word to him. Why should there be any difference in your treatment of us?" The wolf licked bis chops. "There is a marked difference," he said, "even if it is only a simple one. I can eat a goat, but I can't eat an elephant." Whereupon he fell to and made a quick and satisfying meal of the unhappy creature. ROUTED THE "ROGUE. A Bad Elephant, a LigMted Lamp and a Lucky Blow. An odd experience fell to the lot of three men who were on tiger hunting expedition in India. To prevent the invasion of mosquitoes and other insects that would be attracted by the light In their quarters the heavy cotton curtain which formed the door of the tent was closed, and the three friends were chatting across the table when suddenly the whole tent shook, and as they looked round to see the cause the heavy curtain was roughly snatched away, and in the open doorway appeared the head of a big elephant. The men had no time to catch up their rifles. They knew by the appearance of the animal that he meant mischief. Lifting up the roof of the tent with his head he threateningly swung out his trunk at the man nearest him. At this the hunter sprang to his feet and. seizing the lighted lamp from the table, hurled it with all his strength against the animal's forehead. The glass broke at the blow, and the blazing oil covered the animal's trunk with a sheet of flame. With a cry of terror the beast drew frantically back, shook off the curtain and fled across the country, vanquished by a single blow from an oil lamp. It was a fortunate act, for the animal
