WOULD SAVE LIFE m WOMAH SLAYER Determined Effort to Prevent Execution of Mrs. Lena Cusumano.
(National NewAociatlon) BOSTON, Masts., March 30. A determined effort Is being made to have the death sentence of Mrs. Lena Cuhumano, convicted of murdering; her husband and sentenced to be electrocuted In the State Prlaon at Charlestown tbe first of June, commuted, to life imprisonment. No attempt la being made as yet to secure a commutation of tbe sentence of Enrico Mascioli, who was convicted of the same crime as Mrs. Cusumano, and sentenced to be electrocuted on the same. date. Mrs. Cusumano and Mascioli were convicted of the murder of the woman's husband. The crime was committed in. Hull in September, 1910. A few weeks after the disappearance of Cusumano his body was found on tin shore and an autopsy disclosed that he was murdered. The trial took place in the historic town of Plymouth. A number of witnesses testified, the most Important of whom was the seven-year-old daughter of Mrs. Cusumano, who identified the quilt In which Cusumano's body was wrapped, as onu that was on her father's bed. Other witnesses were Mrs. Cusumano's sisters, who testified against her. Both defendants testified, denying the crime, but the evidence, such as the finding of a blood-stained ax. a hole in the ground near the Cusumano house and a bundle of blood-stained clothing belonging to Mrs. Cusumano, was so strong that the jury found the pair guilty after short deliberation. It ia believed there is little doubt that the efforts to secure a commutation of the woman's sentence will succeed. It is the first time in the history of Massachusetts that a woman was sentenced to die In the electric air, as It is the first time in the memory of persons of this generation that 1 a woman was condemned to death In this State. The cases were the first in Plymouth In twenty-five ears that a person has been convicted of first degree murder. " Take Notice! MEXICO CITY CUT OFF FROM WORLD No Word Has Been Received From Mexican Capital Since Midnight.
(National News Association) NEW YORK. March 30. Mexico City was cut. off from wire connection with the rest of the world yesterday and at the office of the Western Union Telegraph company and the Mexican cable company here it was reported that no word had been received from there since midnight. "Wire communication suddenly cea8ed around midnight," said the Western Union officials, "and neither we nor the Mexican cable company have been able to get a word to or from the capital since. We do not know whether the wires have been cut or whether the suspension of service has been caused by storms. "The only advice we have had came from the Mexican telegraph company today by way of Galveston to the effect that all wires to Mexico City were down but that service would be restored some time ago.- We got into northern Mexico by various routes but cannot get anywhere near the capital yet."
