It has been found that the power of charcoal to absorb gases Is vastly increased at Tery low temperatures, so that It can be employed for exhausting Incandescent lamp bulbs and Crookes tubes and also for separating mixed gases. Experiment has shown that at tbe freezing point of water and at normal atmospheric pressure one gram of charcoal absorbs four cubic centimeters of hydrogen and eighteen cubic centimeters of oxygen, but that t 183 degrees centigrade, the temperstore of boiling air, one gram of charcoal absorbs 135 cubic centimeters of hydrogen and 250 cubic centimeters' of oxygen. Harmony.
Governor Hadley of Missouri in speaking of the conditions in the Republican party said the other day: "We have in our own party, unfortunately, some politicians who are political Hessians, available for employment in any cause, without regard to its merits, and ready toadopt any method which will bring results. Such men do not deserve tbe name of Republicans; they deserve to be classed along with Butler's "Indians" and Shannon's "Rabbits," whose chief claim to distinction was their ability to pad registration lists, stuff ballot boxes and forge election returns." Of all those who are talking "harmony" in the 6th District the Hessians who took part in the attempt to deprive the men in the ranks of their right to a fair count are the loudest. There is one sort of struggle which will never cease that is the etruggle between those who believe in honesty, and those who wink their eyes at anything. There will never be harmony In the Sixth district as long as men attempt to steal representation that doees not belong to them by sharp practice. The fight is on in the Sixth District until tbe Hessians are removed.
The Bible Study Conference.
The announcement that the Student's Bible Study conference is going to meet in Richmond means a compliment of no mean order to this community. It is not only that Richmond has facilities for handling such events that it Is extremely ascessible--but more than everything else it means that there is a recognition of the interest which people in Richmond have in all ethical movements. Earlbam College, tbe church life in Richmond and tbe sturdy Y. M. C. A. are but the outward sings of the active regard which people here have In the movements designed to make things better. The Student's Bible Study movement represents a voluntary interest in religious life which comes at a time when the merely perfunctory relations of men and women to churches is falling off. Added to tbe things for which Richmond is well known throughout the country is the Interest here in tbe movement which announces its intention of coming here it is therefore an extremely happy arrangement that Richmond should honor Itself by its entertainment of the expected guests.
Mr. Taft's Friends. But the President's words, of course, have a far wider application. When he, with whatever good intentions, keeps dwelling upon his distrust of popular action, his disbelief in action by the people themselves, it Is natural that his lieuterfants should feel that they have a free hand in trying to thwart the wishes of the people. Theodore Roosevelt. Nothing stands clearer today than the difference between Taft and the reactionaries on the one hand and the progressives with Roosevelt at their head on the other. Everybody now sees that Mr. Taft's fear of the people called "mob rule" means that he trusts those who do not allow the majority to rule. That Taft has hooked up with the old gang everywhere is responsible for the scenes such as happened in New York, Colorado and in Indianapolis. Does anybody need to be told what this signifies? If Mr. Taft is elected who will he be under obligations to the Kealings, the Guggenheims, the Watsons or the everyday citizens? And who do the Kealings and Watsons and Guggenheims line up with, where do they get their livelihood? The danger of the majority ruling will be slight if Mr. Taft is elected.

Talk to your horse and teach him to obey your voice as well as the reins, This may prove valuable if. as sometimes happens, the lines break or become unbuckled. Besides, tbe horse likes the sociability of It. He easily learns a dozen or more words, but be careful to use them only for exactly what you mean. For Instance, "whoa" means to stop at once and stand perfectly still, "get up" to go straight ahead and at once, "back" to step backward, "easy" or "steady" to slow up. These words the horse readily learns and takes kindly to. "Walk" means to change at once to a walk, and "all right," spoken In a calm, reassuring tone, means "don't be afraid that won't hurt you," and it is wonderful to see what a calming effect It has. Speak firmly, but not sharply, to the horses, for they are nervous creatures. Talking to your horse will make him more intelligent and more friendly. Spirit of the West. IN HISTORY Backache

A few years ago Mrs. Norab Burke lived in a comfortable house in an old fashioned street in New York. Life for her was full and Joyous. A good husband loved her. Children played about the house. Up the street lived her father and mother. Across the big bridge were a brother and a sister. Inside of two years came the end of her world. In that time, strangely enough, husband, children, parents, brother and sister died, and she sat desolate In the old house. It was a house of torturing and pathetic memories and peopled by the vague shadows of the loved and lost. She almost went mad. Sleeping or waking, recollection told her weary brain the sad history of bereavement. Finally she groped her way to the church where she was christened and wedded and told the old minister she must have relief or go Insane. "My daughter," said the priest, "when you feel yon are going mad go out and find some one sadder than you and try to comfort that one." "But there is no one." "Oh, yes, there is! Look around you." That day she took a car to the most miserable quarters of the east side, and there she found a woman who had flung herself on the dead body of her child, killed by an automobile. "Where is your husband?" she asked the woman. "He Is in prison for life." She had found a life sadder than hers. She helped to bury tbe child, took the woman to her own home, loved ber back to sanity and found her work. And every day she sought to comfort some miserable one. She was too busy to think of her own Borrows. Finally tbe authorities, learning of ber work, made her probation officer of the Juvenile court She works eighteen hours a day. And always tbe old house Is overrun with the poor kids of the street. She has no time to brood. In self forgetfulness she has found her refuge. And It is said there is no weeter smile on any woman's face. Thus did "the angel of tbe children's court" fuse and weld again in the flame of human pity the fragments of ber broken heart.

News Forecast
WASHINGTON, D. C, March 30. The Wlseonain primary election Tuesday ia expected to furnish the leading subject for political discussion of the week. Delegates to the national conventions of both parties will be elected in the primaries, under the new Wisconsin law. The best impartial judges of the situation in the Badger State concede that La Follette will carry the majority of the State delegation, with delegates reported in many cases to favor Roosevelt for second choice. The state is strongly progressive. The Taft men are active, but their hope apparently is not to get a majority of the delegation, but to prevent La Follette from having a unanimous vote from the State. On the Democratic aide, Wisconsin seems to present about the same situation as Oregon and Nebraska, all being primary election states with three tickets in the field. Harmon is supposed to be stronger in Wisconsin than in the other states and, backed by the soliu conservative vote, it is thought possible the Ohio governor may win over Wilson and Clark, who will have to divide the "radical" vote between them. Democratic primaries will be held in Alabama Monday for the selection of delegates to the Baltimore convention. The voters will express their preference for president in the primaries, but the delegates will be named later in the state convention. There is no doubt but Alabama will give a decided vote for Congressman Oscar D. Underwood, and the delegates will be positively instructed for the Southerner first, last and all the time. At the same primaries candidates for Congress will be named, also minor state officers to be voted for next fall. The tours of the presidential aspirants will be watched with interest. Colonel Roosevelt is to be heard in several cities in the middle west, while Senator La Follette plans to invade New England. The reception of the Wisconsin senator in New England will afford an opportunity-for an interesting comparison, as both Taft and Roosevelt recently visited that section. Champ Clark has accepted an invitation to speak at a Democratic banquet in Louisville Saturday night, while William J. Bryan and other party leaders will be heard at a similar gathering in Des Moines. Also of political interest will be the local option elections in Illinois and Michigan, the municipal election in Milwaukee, where the Socialists are fighting for a continuance of power; the aldermanic elections in Chicago, and the Republican district conventions in Maine, Missouri, Iowa and several other states. Some important decisions are expected to be handed down by the Supreme Court of the United States, when that body convenes Monday after a two weeks' recess. Political New York is awaiting with State of Ohio, city of Toledo, 1 68. Lucas County, Frank J. Cheney makes oath that he Is senior partner of the firm of F. J.
