Nominations are considered (equivalent to elections. Senator Jell Davis is a candidate for Te-electlon and Is opposed by former Congressman Stephen Brundidge of Searcy. The latter has stumped the State from end to end and his friends Ibelleve he has more than an even chance of winning the senatorsbip. The contest for governor has been 3ieated between Governor George . iDonaghey, who desires a third term, and Joseph T. Robinson, who has represented the Sixth district in Congress sfor a number of years. Statewide prohibition and taxation re the Issues In the light for the governorship. Governor Donaghey advocates Statewide prohibition through tthe medium of the Initiative and referendum, to be submitted in the election to be held next September He also advocates adoption by the people of the o-called Turner-Jacobson revenue act. Saescd by the last legislature, which eeks to revolutionize the taxing and tether revenue laws of the state. Congressman Robinson, who is ,opkposing Governor Donaghey for a third term, is Inclined to make light of the prohibition question as a leading IkMue. He says, however, that if a majority votes for Statewide prohibition jbe will Insist upon its cenforcement in tthe event he Is elected. He opimsed the Turner-Jacobson revenue act, claiming Of ratified It will increase the taxes Xatd by farmers. Arkansas has not adopted the presidential preference primary system, "tout ward and township mass meetings "mill bo held tomorrow for the selection of delegates to the State conven tion, which, in turn will name the delegates to the Democratic national convention. ceptable candidate, especially amon? the old-line Democrats. Unless developments between now and the meeting of the State convention change the situation materially it appears likely that Virginia's twenty-four delegates will go to Baltimore without instructions.
ISSUE SHARPLY DRAWN. COLORADO SPRINGS. Colo., March 26. There is every prospect of a lively contest in the Republican State convention which is to meet here tomorrow to name eight delegates-at-large to the national convention at Chicago. Colorado has-been claimed for Taft ever since the State Committee declared for him at its meeting in Denver last month. The Roosevelt managers declare that the Denver gathering was packed with Federal office holders and that its resolutions in indorsing Taft and rejecting the proposal for presidential preferences primaries did not reflect the sentiments of the rank and Hie of the party. Despite the fact that the 8tale organization is against them, the Roosevelt followers are preparing to make a hard fight in the convention and are hopeful of results.
NO DECIDED CHOICE. RICHMOND. Va., March 26. That Jths Old Dominion baa no decided preference aa yet In the matter of a candidate 'for the Democratic presidential nomination in Indicated by the views expressed by the members of the VI rirfnla State Democratic committee who assembled here today to decide upon the time and place for holding the iStato convention to select the d-le-ugates to the Baltimore convention. Wood row . Wilson has made the most active campaign here so far and his aim probably is heard more frequently than that of any of the other Democratic aspirants. The fact that lw 'da a natjve of Virginia is expected to uald bis candidacy to some extent. Conarressman Underwood Is well thought . of, and he also la regarded as something of a "native son," since he wps educated at the University of Virginia. Halcyon Days. The seven days preceding and the seven days following the winter solstice were called by the ancients "halcyon days." This phrase is derived from a fable which sets forth that Hal cyone, a princess who grieved so deeply for the loss at sea of her spouse, wai sent thither in pity In the form of ti halcyon bird or kingfisher. According to the legend, the halcyon bird had during the time of breeding the powct of lulling the waves, and It was believed at this time the sea was always calm and might be navigated in perfect security. Experience, of course, dispelled this fuble; but, like many another old world story, it has left behind It a distorted meaning. In this cas the connection between the old and the new significance is clear, for the term, once expressive of peace and calm upon the waters, is equally expressive of tranquillity upon the sea of life.
