A PLOT Alleged Taft Supporters Are Secretly Working for Fairbanks. (Palladium Special) INDIANAPOLIS, March 22. The men who have been intrusted with the Taft campaign in Indiana and who have already caused a serious disaffection in the Republican party of this state through the methods they have pursued to further their own ends, are to be held responsible by the real leaders of the party. It Is conceded that the told Keallng-Watson-Hemen-way gang has already jeopardized the party's chances this fail needlessly. The fact is, it is generally recognized that these politicians are 'not at heart for Mr. Taft but that they are merely using him as a decoy in order to gain control of the Indiana delegation to the National convention with the belief that somehow they may be ab)e to slip Charles V. Fairbanks into the place at the bead of the ticket. It I merely a case of self preservation with this crowd, it is asserted by others. These same men were accused of having caused the defeat of the Republican party in Indiana two years ago, preferring to ruin, rather than to lose the rule of the party. Now it is asserted that tbey are again willing to see their party go down in defeat rather than permit the progressive Republicans to come into power. The party at large has awakened to the selfish motives which have been the mainspring of the actions of these bosses and it Is promised that the first step In the direction of shelving them for good and all will be the selection of Roosevelt delegates to the early state convention next week when tbe four delegates at large to the National Republican convention will be selected. Even men who have been Inclined to support the Taft candidacy are now lining up with the Roosevelt men for the purpose of discountenancing the type of politicians into whoso bands Mr. Taft's candidacy has fallen Into in this Btate. They feel that there is even more at stake in this state than the expression of a choice for presidential nomination the future welfare of the Republican party in this state. And with the further belief that the men in charge of affairs on the Taft side are really not sincerely for Taft at all, they do not believe that they are assisting Taft when they vote for delegates to the state convention who will be controlled by the Keating crowd. At The Murray Vaudeville afternoon and night At the Murray. The bill offered at the Murray this week is one that will satisfy every one who visits this theater looking for a high class entertainment. Stanley and Scanlon present a novelty musical act that takes well, the lady in the team giving several excellent character changes. The Carr Trio with Master Clifford Carr the wonderful child monologlst give a singing turn that is always sure of making good. 1 Dick and Alice McAvoy in their comedy skit "Herald Square Jimmy" furnish most of the laughs In the show. The little song bringing in the names of all the popular "stars" is especially clever and well appreciated. The skit fairly brims with comedy of the good clean sort. The big act is furnished by Murray's dogs. Every child in the city should see the act and every grown person who can appreciate exceptionally clever work by dumb brutes will regret it should he fall to take advantage of this opportunity to see one of the best dog acts that has played the Murray this season. Odd but Effective Vay of Attaching a Man's Property. Attaching a man's property for debt is supposed to be a legal process, but an incident which occurred years ago in the city of Natchez, ns related by Davy Crockett in his "Life and Adventures. shows that there are other "attach ments" which sometimes accomplish a beneficent purpose. An odd affair occurred when I was last at Natchez, declared Mr. Crockett. A steamboat stopped at tbe landing, and one of the crew went ashore to purchase provisions. He went into a saloon on tbe way. and tbe adroit inmates contrived to rob blm of all his money. The captain of the boat, a determined fellow, went ashore in the hope of persuading them to refund, but tbey declined. Without further ceremony the captain, assisted by bis crew and passengers, some 300 or 400 in number, made fast an Immense cable to the frame building where tbe theft bad been committed. Then be allowed fifteen minutes for the money to "be forthcoming, vowing that if it were not produced within that time he would put steam to bis boat and drag the house into the river. Tbe thieves knew that be wonld keep bis word, and tbe money was promptly produced. PRESENCE OF MIND. The Earl Kept His Head, and the Highwayman Lost His. In "Sporting Days and Sporting Ways" Ralph Nevlll relates two incidents of the early nineteenth century In which English highwaymen figure: "lu August 1S19. Lady Stanley, traveling from York accompanied by her servant, was stopped by a highwayman, when the maid in her alarm took up a bottle of ginger beer, and the cork flying out made such a report that tbe highwayman instantly galloped off in great alarm." Lord Berkeley's encounter with one of the famous "gentlemen of tbe road" had more serious consequences: "Being driven over Hounslow Heath he was awakened from sleep by bis coach being brought to a standstill and a threatening face looking In at the window. 'I hare you at last, my lord. said a gruff voice, though yon said yon would never yield to a robber. Deliver! Certainly. was tbe earl's reply. bot tell me first wbo is that looking over your shoulder? "The blghwayman turned his head to look and at the same moment Lord Berkeley shot him through the head dead. BBISKOLI IM A RAGE An Unapprociativo Audience and Sympathetic Servant. BrignolL tbe famous Italian tenor always expected aa encore, no mattet where or what be sang, and If it was not forthcoming be was off in a rage Instantly. In some small town be sang bis favorite song. "Com e GentiL" a serenade from Donizetti's "Don Pasquale," with unusual care and walked off tbe stage perfectly satisfied, paus lng at tbe wings td listen to the ap p la use. To. bis utter amazement there was not a sound of approbation. Hp strode Into tbe dressing room muttering that be would not respond to an encore: be would refuse to sing an otber song. Still the house remalneo silent "No. he cried to those a boat blm: "I refuse to sing again. I refusa to respond to tbe encore." INSTANT DEATH. It Is Not So Quick but That the Mind Has Time to Act It is questiouable if sucb a pbenom enon as Instant death is known to tbe scientist and Investigator. Physicians and surgeons tell us that death by gun shot wound Is the easiest mode of terminating life: yet, rapid as such h mode of taking off must necessarily be the body has leisure to feel and time to reflect and on rare occasions even ic act On the first attempt of one of tb adherents of tbe Spanish monarch t assassinate William, prince of Orange the bail passed through the bones v his face and brought him to the ground In the instant which preceded stupe factlon. however, lie was able to frauj tbe notion that tbe ceiling of a rooc had fallen in and crushed him. Another question in this connectioi ia that of probable pain. Although mi merous Instances could be cited ii support of tbe view that the mind act in cases of so cal'ed Instant death, it by no means follows that tbe infliction of a fatal blow Is attended by tbe leas; semblance of pain or a single pang of fear or regret. Unless death results Immediately, however, tbe pain may be as- varied as the nature of the injuries. ' Winning a Fur Coat Tbe artist Hans Canon once painted a Russian prince In a magnificent fur mantle which took his fancy so greatly that be endeavored to bit on a plan by which he might retain possession of it On sending home the portrait be omitted to return tbe garment, and to the letter requesting blm to do so Jie made no reply. One day when looking oat of a window be saw the prince coming toward bis bouse. Has tily slipping into tbe garb. Canon sat down in an armchair near tbe fire. Tbe prince, wbo had come for bis coat started on seeing Canon groaning and trembling at the fireside "What is the matter with you?" he asked. "Ob," groaned Canon. "I don't know what it is. hut I feel so weak and wretched, and 1 cannot get warm. Two days ago my brother died of smallpox, and 1 am a bit nervous about myself." GETS A POSITION, THEN INTOXICATED Acknowledging his subservience to John Barleycorn, and his inability to keep straight when drinking whiskey, Harmon Clark arraigned on the charge of drunk Thursday, was given an opportunity to leave the city with a suspended sentence of 140 days in jail to face if he is again brought into police court on the charge of drunk within six months. The young man .was arrested and fined recently for drunkenness, and was 'released Wednesday. He had secured a position as traveling salesman at a good salary, and started up town Wednesday afternoon to buy some clothes before starting out. He got drunk and was arrested. He pleaded for another chance to straighten up Thursday, saying that he wanted to take the position offered him, and get on his feet .again. "Give me a chance to make a man of myself," he asked the mayor, and was given his chance. It will be the last time. He says he does not intend to come back to Richmond again. They will prove best in the field where the real test comes. The length of shaping of Janesville plow bottoms is based on correct principals, that's why Janesville plows have won more prizes in five successive years at the world's two greatest annual plowing matches than all other makes combined. The reason is, that Janesville plow bottoms are scientifically correct and before they were adopted in their present form they had been proven best by exhaustive tests on the experimental grounds -of the Janesville Machine Co., doing actual work on wild soil, and turf and stubble. The moldboard of the Sod Breaker bottom is long, but not too long. The. furrow slice is turned . completely upside down and laid before It begins to drag and increase the draft The moldboard of the Stnbble bottom is shaped to carry the furrow slice as high as possible and lay it properly with the greatest amount of pulverization possible. Repeated experiments have produced the moldboard called the Turf and Stubble Bottom. We have succeeded in producing this combination through the application separately of the principals which meet the requirement of a Turf Bottom and Stubble Bottom. Youwill find the Janesville Turf and Stubble Bottom will give perfect satisfaction on either ground with the least friction and the most thorough pulverization possible. The Janesville Sod and Stnbble Bottom has been proven equally successful. It is adapted for work similar to the Turf and Stnbble Bottom. It will not only lay sod over smoothly; but will pulverize stubble ground more than any other style of bottom we make. Many of these combination bottoms have done good work in the fields, saving their owners the price of an extra bottom, and the labor and time of changing from one to the other. We cannot recommend our combination bottoms too highly. FARMERS WILL NEED THE BEST THIS SPRING because of the late Spring and Short Season. Come in and let ns demonstrate to you that we have the most up-to-date line of Plows, Harrows, Planters, Seeders, Spreaders, Etc.
