Keeping Up The Fight. ' At last the real significance of the coming ward meetings has come out into the open. The veriest child can understand it. The ward meetings on Friday night will decide whether this county is to fall again into the clutches of machine politics or whether this is to remain a place where the people have some real part in their party government.

Is it necessary to explain to intelligent men that the mere business of going to the poll is not enough? ' Elections are a choosing between the men who have been nominated either at the ward meetings or at the primaries. But the man who Is deluded into believing that he is really helping to govern the city, state, or nationals only doing half when he goes to the polls. ' The other half, the important half, is to choose the right men as candidates and to control the party machinery.

The control of the district machinery lay for a long time with sell sh men. Hence It came that when the voters went to the polls all the work had been done before they got there by gentlemen who controlled the ward meetings. The slump In the republican vote has been due simply to the fact that many men have not been pleased with the candidates and yet did not want to vote the Democratic ticket. if this process had not been checked it would have meant atpractfcal disfranchisement of the voters. But then a change came. The Republican voters demanded that they be given a share in the naming of the delegates to the convention demanded that they have a hold on their own party machinery. The effect was that almost alone among Indiana counties, Wayne County has stood out as a place in which the everyday man had a chance for his white alley. If this had been confined In its influence to this county there would not now be money pouring in here to corrupt voters in behalf of the old machine which everyone thought was vanquished. But as long as Wayne county is free and untrammeled it means that not only this county but the whole district is undominated. Those who saw Jim Watson "retire" Those that saw Barnard lose the majority in this county which was needed to pull him through Those that know that for the first time in many years a shop workers and farmers organization is gradually displacing the activities of attorneys and bankers know that this is repugnant to those who used to control the Sixth district The present activities of men representing not only Kealing of Indianapolis and Jim Watson but the whole force of machine politics in this state means but one thing to stamp out of any chance of control the everyday citizens of this county. Yet this can be defeated if the men in the ranks will simply do what their adversaries are trying to do by the use of money. They can attend the ward meetings and .vote for known progressives on Friday night. If the men in the ranks of the Republican party will do this they can defeat the attempt. If they do not it will be known of all men that the picking and choosing of the candidates and the control of the machinery which is to elect them does not lie with the everyday citizen. With the foothold gained the rest of the conquest might not be so hard. It simply is a question as to whether the people of Wayne county wish to keep what they have and go on fighting.

Diedrloh Knickerbocker. It may be that a Dutchman named Knickerbocker did live in the early history of New York, but If be did there are no records extant to prove it The truth Is, the name was created by Washington Irving, who applied it to all residents of New York la his time who happened to be descended from the early Dutch settlers. Irving used this quaint Dutch character in his "Knickerbocker History of New York" to burlesque tbe early days of the city. The volume purported to have been the work of Diedrlch Knickerbocker and gave an amusing and satirical account of the early Dutch settler. Records of the period tell us that tbe book bitterly offended their descendants, who never forgave Irving for his fling at thorn. Now York Times. ''THIS DATE

Length of tho Law.

The phrase "the length of the law" owes its origin to the enormous length of some of the parchment rolls upon which tbe ancient statutes of Great Britain Were inscribed. The present day official title of the "master of the rolls" is a reminder of this ancient custom. Some faint idea of the "bulk of the English records may be obtained from the fact that a single statute, tbe land tax commissioners act, passed in tbe first year of the reign of George IV., measures when unrolled upward of 000 feet! In one week during the early part of last summer the Port Elizabeth (Africa) feather market reached the (170,000 point, the highest ever. JN HISTORY" 0
