EHTERED PROTEST Pppose ; Removal of Tracks

From the Park Wcishaupt Scores Them.

STREET CARS A TOPIC

Council Thinks It Foolish to

Put New Signs on the Old Gondolas.

Although the ordinance providing

for the removal of the tracks from the Olen and allowing the freight interur-

bane to run down North Twentieth

- street, was before council for the first

reading -last night, a remonstrance

, signed by thirty-three residents of

North Twentieth street and vicinity was also read. Both matters were referred to the committee on franchis

es.

Councilman Weishaupt made a de

cided stand against the remonstrance,

ssylng: "I don't understand why they

re against freight cars. They are not very pubUc-tplrited citizens la my

opinion, as they don't keep up their

sidewalks. 1 was out there recently to look over this matter, and the sido-

. walks on North Twentieth street are

full of holes in which water stands

This removing or the tracks from the . Mien will be a public improvement, and

these people don't want it." A Good Suggestion.

The suggestion that "it would be

like putting new gold buttons on an

' old worn out coat," to place new light

ed signs on the "old shells of street

cars here," proved the means of delaying for a time the consideration of

the ordinance providing for llluminat ed signs on the street cars. The or

dlnance was passed, but will not be

effective until the street' car investi

gating committee reports.

Dogs again! Councilman .Bartel'8 resolution providing for muzzling of

dogs all the time when off the premls

s of their owners, was lost by a big

majority. There were ten votes cast.

, nine against the resolution. Councilman Thatcher protested against the practice of "kids," armed with small air guns, shooting people.

He said this practice should be dis

couraged without loss of time. The police department will order all "kids" to cease shooting people. An ordinance appropriating $30 to pay in full the stenographer employed by the hospital Investigating committee was passed. Discuss Brick Streets. Brick streets were also brought up for discussion. Councilman Williams stated that he had paid a visit to West Main street, the paving of which he recently defeated by his negative vote, and, he said, as a result of this visit, he had changed his mind. He stated ' If the city would pay toward the brick paving the amount It would cost to macadamise the street, he would vote for bricking it. This matter will be brought up again soon. It is thought. ' Mayor Zimmerman explained that he was against, as Williams was recently, of skipping . from Fourth and Main 'treats across the river to make permanent streets, but said that as the grading of Main street under the C. 'and O tracks was' not established. It v would not be wise to pave that part of the street now and run the risk of having it changed. A petition for a cement sidewalk on the east side of South Tenth street, from E to F streets, passed. The only resident property owner la the square desires the improvement. , , Councilman Evans again discussed the crosswalks at South C and Fifth streets, which are in bad condition. North C street, from Thirteenth to Fourteenth, and North E street, near Twentieth, are also in bad condition, several councilmen said, but they were told that the weather conditions makes it impossible tt do anything now, and that the board of works would take the matter up as soon as possible. Semi Minor Matters. A deep hole on Southwest A street was ordered filled by the council last Bight. The Light. Heat and Power company dug the hole, and did not fill It properly, so it was stated. No street light at this point makes it dangerous. A light at North Nineteenth and O streets is desired by nineteen resldenta . nearby. The matter was referred to the committee on street lighting. A choked catch basin at South Twelfth and F streets; water on the street at South B and Fourth streets; i s bad aidewalk on north side of South B street, between Fourteenth and Fifteenth street, and mud washing on the

east sidewalk or South Fifteenth street v between B and D street, were referred

to the board of works with numerous other complaints on the conditions of

the street and sidewalks over the city

generally. As soon as the weather

opens up and the city can put a force of men to work on the streets and

sidewalks of the city, all defects will

be remedied.

peen permanently cured by their use.
