BILLBOARD FIGHT IIITiraSTEIID People West of- the River Seek to Eliminate This Nuisance.
At the meeting of the West Richmood Improvement Association this renins at the Baxter School building the main topic for discussion will be the methods suggested on how to secure the elimination of the billboards. This subject has been before the association for some time and tbla evening the report of the committee which was appointed at a previous meeting will be submitted. As there is no legal way to bave the billboards removed, the committee was rest rue ted to devise some plan which it believes practical and it Is likely the association will decide this evening to invite all advertisers to Its next meeting when .they will be requested to refuse to advertise on the boards. The association believes that if the advertisers knew the sentiment of the people on the West Side they would refrain from using billboard advertising. City Statistics Deaths and Funerals. TOWER OF HAMILTON COURTHOUSE FALLS TWO FIREMEN KILLED AIID FOUR INJURED
HAMILTON, Ohio., March 15. Two firemen were killed, four other persons were injured and Butler County's fine stone courthouse was so badly damaged that it will be impossible to rebuild it, when fire in the upper stories, at 11:30 yesterday weakened tbe supports of the high tower, which crashed inward, carrying all before it. THE DEAD. John Hunker, fireman, 35 years old, of 223 South C street; buried in ruins. William Love, fireman, 38 years oM, of 135 Franklin street; died at hospital. THE INJURED. George Fritz, fireman, seriously, burned about the arms and legs. Rog Ogg, fireman, badly cut on the right hand in rescuing Fireman Love. John F. Heath, Deputy Clerk of Courts, cut about arms by falling glass. Chief of Fire Department William Doty, caught in debris and right arm injured. Crossed wires in the cupola is believed to have been tbe cause of tbe fire. Tbe big dome fell within six minutes after the fire was discovered, and it is thought that the fire must have been burning unnoticed for some time. The tower dome fell with a resounding crash, the clock works and other portions falling to the rotunda, three floors below. It was in this crash that Fireman John Hunker lost his life and Fireman William Love, both of the One Hose Company, received the Injuries of an internal nature which caused his death. Traffic Officer Welsh was the first to turn in an alarm of fire. His duty places him at the Second and High street crossing, where he discovered the dense volume of smoke pouring from the doomed tower. Barney Eilers, the courthouse elevator operator, and a newspaper man narrowly escaped being caught in the flames. Both smelled smoke at 11:30 a. m., and running the elevator to the garret, opened the garret door. A flash of fire singed their hair. They rushed to the elevator, but REFUSEDJWOSAL Miners Throw Down Gauntlet Today. NEW YORK, March 15. The anthracite miners today threw down the gauntlet to the operators by refusing to accept the mine owners' counter proposal that tbe men remain at work three years longer under the wage working agreement fixed by the Anthracite Coal Commission. Delegates from the miners, headed by President White, gave their answer at noon at a conference with the operators. The men's communication today was an ultimatum which may precipitate a strike that will tie up the anthracite industry. found access cut off by the wire cable snapping in two from the intense heat. They made their escape through a door leading to the law library on the fifth floor. Almost at the same moment Judge Gard, of the Common Pleas Court, who was engaged in hearing the injunction case of tbe Standard Oil Company vs The City of Middletown, heard an ominous rumbling overhead, and, realizing the serious nature of the warning, quietly adjourned Court and all escaped in safety. Judge Clarence Murphy was seated in his private office with his stenographer, Miss Branett and Court Bailiff John Mem gel camp when he detected the odor ot smoke. They hurriedly got out of the building, picking up in their flight as many of the Court papers as possible. The news spread like wildfire through the county offices and there was a mad scramble among the clerks and officials to get the valuable records to a place of safety. The blaze had hardly been discovered when the debris from the tower began falling, electric wires to sizz and spurt and all beat a hasty retreat. With the exit of the officials came a mad influx of excited citizens, who began smashing windows and saving the almost invaluable record books from the shelves of the Recorder's, County Clerk and Probate Judge's offices. Many grabbed pieces of furniture, chairs and typewriters and hurled them from the windows. It was just six minutes from the time the fire alarm was sent in that the .magnificent dome, bearing upon its crest a giant figure of the Goddess of Liberty, came crashing and tumbling from its frail support, as the flames licked the gilded figure of justice and obscured It In a cloud of smoke. It was In the falling of the tower that Fireman Fritz received his injuries, being caught in the debris as it landed with a terrific crash upon the tiled floor on the second floor. Courthouse attaches for years have been aware of the insecurity of the support to the heavy tower, which it is Baid was built upon two-by-four timbers.
