REFUGEES ARRIVE. KL PASO. Tex., March 6. Refugees from Mexico are crossing Into the United States today. Every train that arrives across the border brings its quota of Americans who have fled In fear of the revolutionists. A train bearing 150 Americans, mostly women nd children from t h little town of Madero was followed by another from Chihuahua. Every American woman and child In Madero is now safely across the border though a number of men remained behind to protect interests there. A small hospital staff was left near Pearson, other Americans Joining the party from Madero. DEADLY EXTERIOR OF FRUITS Made aa Germleas as Sterilized Water by Simple Process of Washing Off Bacteria. Professor Metchnikoff has ha so much to say in recent years about the enormous proportion of diseases that re acquired by taking bacteria into the system on raw fruit that certain class of people afflicted with the modern mania which may be called sjermiphobia will be interested in the nndIngs of Drs. FlUasier and Sartory, wtoo assert that a little common washing will render the deadly exterior of alt fruits as germless as sterilized water. These men are members of the French Academy of Sciences, and becoming Interested In the charges brought against raw fruit they recently set about the experiments of a aimple character which proved the complete efficacy of cold water as a germ chaser. They placed a few grapes in a little water and found from 120.000 to several million germs In a cubic centimeter in the water. A second washing produced a few thousand of the Metchnikoff terrors, and at the end of a fourth rinsing scarcely any germs could be found In the water used. The interesting part of this work was that with each washing a constant decrease of germs was noted 90 per cent, being eliminated each time the process was repeated. In addition to demonstrating how simple It is to ward off all danger from germs on fruit the Frenchman asserts that not half the specimens which do llnd a habitation on fruit are harmful.

BIG LIFE INSURANCE POLICIES

The largest amount of life Insurance held by any woman in the world is now carried by Mrs. Charles Netchter. head of a Chicago department atore. Mrs. Xetcber has just taken out a life Insurance policy for $200,000, which raises her total insurance to 11,200,000, more than that of any other person In Chicago. It was announced. Mrs. Xetcber has followed a platform of her husband, who, when he died in 1904. was insured for $500,000. After the death of her husband, Mra. Xetcher assumed control of the store and has conducted the business ever since, building it up and constantly increasing her holdings in real estate as the profits from her business increased. She soon became what Is known In insurance circles as "a good risk." When she decided to take out large policies on ber life the various comnaniea extended to her the usual

rights allowed business men. And, according to the Chicago executive, representative of a big eastern company, who has written her Insurance, It la uncommon for a woman to be allowed the same rights as a man in the writing of large policies. "Women are usually limited in the amount of Insurance they are allowed to take out." he said. "However, we regard Mrs. Xetcher as an extraordinary business woman and one who is Important enough to carry the largest Insurance in Chicago." Mrs. Xetcher's policies are with three companies. All the policies are of the straight life variety. As to the reasons for the insurance, Mrs. Xetcher says they are simple. She la the head of a great business, she has many holdings, and besides she haa four children whom she loves.

IMPROVEMENT ON AEROPLANE

Object of Recent Invention Is to Provide Propellers to Drive and Also 8teer Machine. In describing an aeroplane, the Invention of G. W. Thompson of Kingston, Okla., the Scientific American says: This invention relates to flying machines of the heavier than-air type, and the object Is to provide a macbtne of this class which has its propeller? so arranged that they not only drive the machine but steer it also. By soch a construction the inventor minimizes the necessity of using movable

Aeroplane. rudders heretofore used to

the machine's course of travel. Balancing Is accomplished by locating the power plant directly below the center of gravity of the supporting planes, and by the manner In which the planes are tilted with reference to the line of travel. The Improved aeroplane Is shown in perspective In the accompanying view.
