DIVORC

ACTION

Mrs. Karns Decides Not to Make Defense, Her Counsel Oppose Decision. Attorneys Will Bond and Will W. Roller, this morning withdrew their appearance In the divorce case of Otis K. Karns versus Minnie Karns, which la pending in the Wayne circuit court. Thr action of tb attorneys has caused some comment. Upon being asked why they withdrew from th case Attorney Reller made the following stateI'jfCt: "We withdrew from the case because Mrs. Karns, our client, decided not to make any defense. This decision ws made after consultat'on with leathers In her church and was furthered by the desire on her part not to involve hr children in a court trial. Wt feel that defense should be made cgainst the allegations in the plainllif's complaint, and being unable to lo so because of our client's instructions, (he matter is now in the hands ot the prosecuting attorney, who is required by law to appear am! make det nse to nil divorce proceedings where 1h defendant does not have counsel. .Although the prosecuting attorney is not bound by the wishes of Mrs. Karns nr we are, we fell'confldent that in the exercise of his duty to the state he vIP bring out all evidence in the case so that the court will be ab'e to intelllfntly pass upon the matter." ...

TRUSTEES MAY BE NAMED INSPECTORS As there has been a great deal of contention in this county as to whether township trustees are entitled to be appointed inspectors of the board of registration by virtue of their office. In general elections, county auditor Lewis Bowman recently wrote to Thomas M. Honan, attorney general, for his opinion. In a letter received by Auditor Bowman this morning, Honan states that township trustees are not entitled to Inspectorship of the board of registration by virtue of their office, but that the county commissioners may appoint them, or others who mtbey. desire to appoint as Inspectors. For some time the trustees in Wayne county have pressed their claims, saying that they should be appointed Inspectors under the new registration act. Their claims were substantiated by a number of persons, while others declared chat it was not compulsory to appoint them.

WEED ANNOUNCES LOCAL CAMPAIGN Letters announcing the banquet to be given at the Y. M. C. A. on February fifteenth to launch a local "men and religion forward campaign," were sent to religious leaders in all parts of the county today by H. S. Weed, chairman of the special banquet committee. Plans are being completed to have nearly two hundred Wayne county men attend the dinner. H. H. Yohe and T. L.. Smith, leaders in the Indianapolis campaign, will speak. Several Richmond citizens will also make short statements as to the purpose of the movement, and it is probable that before the evening is concluded, action will be taken to start a week's campaign here with the hope of bringing the Bible and its teachings into business houses and factories.

Repenting at Leisure. Agnes was u little tot of five, with curly, flaxen hair, china-like complexionand a will of ber own. She had been ill advised, not to say deliberately naughty, at the dinner table, and mamma bad dismissed ber to her bedroom, to remain In durance vile till she should express due contrition for ber behavior. Agnes cheerfully obeyed the parental order and showed no spirit of repentance at the end of the first quarter of an hour. When thirty minutes had elapsed mamma called from an adjoining room: "Agnes, dearie, aren't you sorry?" There was no reply from the darkness beyond. Ten minutes later the question was repeated. Back came the reply in the patient dignity and childish treble of five summers: "Mamma, please don't ask me any more. I'll come and let you know when I'm sorry." This 8mall World. "This is getting to be a mighty small world compared to what it used to be," said a telegraph operator. "I'm handling a cable wire now. The other night the cable editor of one of our dally papers called me up over the telephone and asked 'me whether hi9 correspondent down at Cape Haltlen had filed anything. The wire from Cape Haitien had just called, and I told him to wait a moment. Then 1 went to my key and in an instant learned that the correspondent bad just filed a thousand words. I went back to the telephone and reported the fact to the editor. It didn't take nearly as long for him to get that luformation all the way from Cape Haitien, more than a thousand miles distant, as It has for me to tell yon about It" New York Herald.

COMMERCIAL CLIJB BEGINS CAMPAIGN "We won't get everybody, but we find that a large per cent of the men we visit are willing to join the Commercial Club" was the statement made late today by E. M. Haas, chairman of the squad of fifty men who are trying to secure 230 new members for the Commercial Club this afternoon. No exac( figures could be secured, as it is not thought the committees will finish its work until late this evening, but telephone calls sent back by captains of the sixteen teams showed that fifty or sixty names were added to the membership roll during the first two hours of the short campaign. At one o'clock this noon, fortyeight members of the club, divided into sixteen squads of three men each, met at the club rooms and were provided with lists of non-members whom they were to visit.

Thanks That Differ. "I never take a morning bath," says Sir John Crichton Browne, "without feeling that I ought to ask a blessing and return thanks for it as much as foi my dinner." In the case of dinner, however, one's gratitude Is a preamble; In

the matter of the bath the feeUng is

that of one who sighs, shivering, "Thank goodness, that's over!" New York Mall.
