Since the recent notion of the Richmond High School authorities In doing away with high school fraternities there is one more thing which a great many people would like to see happen. That Is the spontaneous action of tbo girls In tbo high school toward a 'simpler way of dressing. Indianapolis Is seeing this go into effect at Shortrldgo High School. The announcement of the lntenttlon of the girls of Sbortrldge High School to put the ban on peek-a-boo waists, cheap Jewelry and high- heeled shoes may not appear at Irst sight a very important or serious thing. But If they carry It through it Is likely to accomplish very much for health and decency in Indianapolis. The present tendency of a good many girls in Indianapolis seems to be to try to be and look older and more sophisticated than tbeir mothers. And this tendency may be one of the many reasons why a great many mothers and fathers look older than they ought to look.

There may not be any great barm in a bunch of young girls blowing into a hotel dining room at eight o'clock in the evening and having a soft drink with two very smartly dressed : oung gentlemen but we venture that It would cause their families some annoyance. Why? Because every man in the room turned around to look. Why did the men turn around to look? Because each and every one of the girls looked as if she might have stepped in the cafe from the boulevards of Paris? There were a bunch of such silly artless girls in a fashionable cafe le.it night. They seemed to belong to good families. They were expensively attired. It would have been very hard to have told them from their mothers. Their hair was as beautifully coifed. It must have taken some lady's maid a good long time to arrange it. But there was not a man in the whole room who would not have turned around a great many times more to look at a crowd of simply dressed girls with rosy cheeks and hair innocent of the curling Iron and hairpins rats and puffs. They would have rejoiced in the simple and dnusual pleasure of seeing clear skinned, clear eyed girls with their fathers and mothers. They would have felt a thrill such as Riley's poems awake a Joy of good, clean, wholesome home things. Pig tails may not be very 'romantic to the girls who wear them but they are attractive when accompanied by ruddy cheeks and arms that look capable of playing tennis or hitching up a pony or tending a sick father or a little brother. There it no harm In men turning to look at women it all depends on the girl. For a girl who hangs out the signal of sophistication may expect to be treated as sophisticated If a girl chooses to look like an adventuress you may be pretty certain that she will be treated as an adventuress. But there are mighty few men who would bring harm or shame to any woman who bears the outward marks of innocence. The girl with the low heels, the pip tails and smooth hair; the girl with simple and appropriate clothes is the girl who is loved, honored, respected and If need be fought for at the drop of a hat. That is the sort of a girl that men are glad to get up in street cars, trains and stations to give a seat to. And that is the sort of girl that somebody wants to marry or wishes he could. The girls at Shortridge know what they are about. It isn't a matter of beauty and attraction at all its timply a matter of character and tense.

On two topics the great trans-Atlan

agreed. Some creep through a fog at a snail's' pace. Others dash through It at topmost speed the quicker out of it the better. Some insure heavily against loss by lire. Others carry all their tre risks themselves.
