This Is My 74th Birthday
The Kansas City Star last Sunday published an Interview with a "progressive Republican" on the views of an "Old Wheal Horse." And this was the view of the "Old Wheel Horse:" Everybody who ever held an office Is "under obligation" to the party. -Just see," says the old wheel horse, "what the party has done for that fellow, and now he is fighting it." A few years ago when La Pollette made a speech at Salina a standpatter was deeply offended. La FoIIette had read those memorable roll calls showing how Aldrich, Elkins. Gallinger, Long and other Republican senators had voted. "That was a pretty good speech, wasn't it?" asked a friend of this particular Old Wheel Horse. "I didn't like the way he abused the leaders of our party." he replied. "It shows ingratitude." "How's that?" he was asked. "Why, Just see what the party has done for this fellow. It elected him to congress, then elected him governor three times and then elected him United States senator. And now what is he doing? Fighting the party. No, sir, 1 don't like It. Why. if it hadn't been for the Republican party this man I -a Kollette would never have been beard of." Now the thing which seems to worry a great many of our friends the standpatters is the fact than an ethical view is injected into what would otherwise be merely a game: The Game of Politics. In the middle of the last campaign a man wrote this paper asking whether or not he would publish the records of the votes of the then incumbent of the congressional seat. We did. The result was that by the "old wheel horses" we were told that we "had fought the ticket." The question remains still in our mind as to why a standpatter should not approve as much of the record of votes as a Progressive might disapprove? This is the only thing which we have to offer concerning the Republican progressive movement that it depends on proof. The fight against Wisconsin's present senator begau when he told the truth about the record of Philetus SawyerIt is this thing which prejudices us against those who believe that the record of any member of congress or any other office should be suppressed. What shall be said of any organization which asks its record to be suppressed ?

TO SAVE CORN CROP
(National News Association) LINCOLN, Neb. Feb. 16. Recent experiments are said to have indicated that seed corn In Nebraska is in the worst condition in its history, and that unless something is done at once to remedy existing conditions the crop this year is likely to fall short by about 60 per cent. In an effort to save this probable loss of from t25.ooo.OAA
to $40,000,000 a whirlwind educational campaign is being planned by the business interests. During the coming week half a dozen seed-testing trains
will start over the state to get the farmers to test their seed corn before it is planed. Each train will be in charge of experts of the Nebraska Experiment Station. Stops will be made at every town and village to give the lecturers an opportunity to explain the situation to the farmer
and instruct them in the methods of
testing seed corn.
The Horse. The reins may guide the horse, the bit may Inspire him by Its careful manipulation and the whip mas urge him forward to greater ambition, but the human voice Is far more potent than an these agencies. Its assuring tones will mora quickly dispel bin fright, Its sharp, clear, electric commands will more thoroughly arouse his ambition and its gentle, kindly praises will more
completely encourage the Intelligent road horse than the united force of the bit and reins and the lash. No animal la domestic as more readily responds to the power of kindness than the road horse. Exchange.

They Are Closely Observing Public Health Conditions. An examining physician for OM tit
the prominent Life Insurance Compan
ies, in an interview on the subject, made the astonishing statement that
the reason why so many applicants, for
insurance are rejected Is because kidney trouble is so common to tfc
American people, and the large major J

mat tney nave the disease. He states that Judrlnc from hla own
experience and reports from druggists
wno are constantly in direct touch with the public, there is one Drenara-
tlon that has probably been mora suc
cessful in relieving 'and curing theso
diseases than any remedy known. The mild and healing influence of Dr. Kilmer's Swamp-Root Is soon realized. It stands the highest for its remarkable record of cures. We llnd that Swamp-Root is strictly an herbal compound and we would advise our readers who feel in need of such a remedy to give it a trial. It is on sale at all drug stores in bottles of two sizes fifty-cents and one-dollar. However, if you wish first to test its wonderful merits, send to Dr. Kilmer & Co., Blnghamton, N. Y., for a sample bottle, absolutely free. When writing be sure and mention the Richmond Daily Palladium.

The Law. Of. all the parts of a law, the most effectual is the vindicatory, for it Is but lost labor to say, "Do this or avoid that," unless we also declare. "This ball be the consequence of your noncompliance." The main strength and force of a law consist In the penalty annexed to it. Blackstone.
The Courage of Life. The two virtues that help us along most in life are trust and courage. Apart from the tragedies invited by in and violence and self Indulgence, a large part of our trouble comes from anxiety, distrust, apprehension. It waa not ail frivolity that dictated the answer of a young girl who, being urged to prepare herself for a profession, or a definite work, responded: "I'm not going to look ahead and worry. I can
do a lot of useful things. I can mend.
and make salad, and amuse children, and be patient and economical, and help people to enjoy themselves, and
I don t believe nice girls starve." Courage and faith are always assets. Even if life goes back upon them and fails to come up to expectations the practice of theso virtues is just that much to the good, and we have at least not lived In the evil moment until It arrived. Harper's Bazaar.

Per Peace Only. It is well known that the Friends have always been devoted to the principles of peace. As they had a controlling influence in the public affairs of Nantucket, there was no military organization on that island for several generations. How the matter wad managed Is told by the author of "September Days on Nantucket Whenever military companies came to the island for a holiday young women thronged the windows and waved
