Lorimer & Lincoln.
So many men have started poor In America that an unsavory reputation can often be covered up in later prosperity by the simple statement that the man is "self-made." Witness Billy Lorimer of tb stockyards district , sitting in bis bought seat in the United flutes senate. The name of the T. M. C. A. and the fact that he made his first money selling newspapers on the street were a part of the sob story that he made in his speech on the floor of the senate. Even the name of Lincoln has been lately prostituted to serve his purpose. Perhaps on February 12th the birthday of the most famous American poor boy it may be a good thing to differentiate between the poor boys 1 who keep their ideals at any cost and the poor boys who succeed at any cost. Lincoln the son of a certain class of illiterates of little ambition in the South was but a boy of the "poor white trash." If ever a man was selfmade it was Lincoln. Lincoln and Lorimer are American types they stand at the end of the poles. As long as those who have not wished that they were in the shoes of those that have we shall continue to have Lorimers not Lincoln There was no envy in Lincoln's heart there was in Lorimer's. But bow many of ul envy Lorimer as a successful man to be emulated by all America if "he had gotten away with it?"

When one tiiiuk of the greet events that have taken place In the Holy Land, the multitude of cities. Tillages and towns, the countless millions who bare been born there and whose bones now lie in its rock ribbed bills, xhf small dimeniiiong of Palestine are almost startling. West of tbe Jordan, wbore most of (be historic events took place, there are only 3.800 square miles, including all tbe geographical divisions now called Palestine. Including the land both east and wesl of tbe Jordan, the total area is 9340 square miles. The length of Palestine from north to south is about 150 miles, it varies in breadth from twenty-three to eighty miles.
An Idea That Failed. In 1870 a Scotchman named Johnston patented a treasure safe for ships designed to render loss of specie and other treasures by wreck Impossible. His proposal was that an unslnkable safe should be suspended at the ship's davits, ready to be lowered into the water at a moment's notice, and he invented a contrivance by means of which the safe would detach itself on emergency and float about until picked up by another vessel. Ships' captains, however, declined to entertain tbe thought
of having a safe full of money hang-; lnir at the davits reartv to thi hand of I
any who cared to trust to a dark nlgbt and the navigable qualities of the chest to make off with it. Exchange.

Next Thursday afternoon there will be a paper read at the Indiana Sanitary and Water Supply Association in its meeting at the German House in Indianapolis which should be heard by every man who is in the public utility business in this state. On the program it appears entitled: "Methods of Appraising Public Utilities by the Railroad Commission of Wisconsin." Prof. Halford Erlkson. Things are getting pretty thick not only here but all over the state in the public utility business. Those public utility men who see the light in cutting the water out of their stock and then ask for a fair return on their money Invested in efficient service for the community will come out best. Halford Erlkson is a member of the public utilities commission in Wisconsin the commission for which Robert Marion La Follette is responsible. His coming into Indiana may be a real turning point in the affairs of the state along constructive lines. After hearing the views of Erlkson what would Mr. Todd of the T. H. I. & E. remark? Mr. Howard Dill will be present at the meeting.

Otyarrt Sang and Schumann Pasted the Hat In the Street. The famous Spanish tenor, Gayarre,
raa one at Barcelona In company with tbe Impresario Schurmann. They
were strolling down the Rambla and
met two street mendicants, one of
whom waa singing while the other beg
ged. Gayarre was touched at their wretched appearance and suggested
Lairing them a couple of louls, but
changed Us mind ana saia tnat ne
might do better still.
"I will sing and yon shall go round
to collect the money. Nobody will ever have heard me sing so cheaply, and th contributions will be a charity. Let us begin at once."
No sooner said than done. The cele
brated tenor asked tht poor singer for
hit repertoire and then attacked the
grand air of "La Traviata." Scarcely bad tht first notes been heard before a crowd began to assemble, and a whls-
ar went round: "It Is bet. It Is Gay

Tht applause was tremendous, and
aa an encore he sang MI1 Barblert di

broke all bounds, and Schurmann, having filled his own hat, had to borrow
Gayarre's. Tht contents, amounting
to a little over $188, were then poured
Into tht hands of the astonished and grateful musicians, and the two improvised street performers had tht greatest difficulty In forcing their way back to the hotel, where Gayarrt remarked: "Well. I hope you are pleased with tht takings. As for me, I have never sung with so much pleasure. It la good to help others."
GUQIOUS BITS OF HISTORY A NAVAL VICTORY WITHOUT BLOODSHED. By A. W. MACY. In 177S Captain Rathburn, commanding a little American vessel with twenty-five men and twelve four-pound guns, swooped down upon the Island of New Providence with Its nest of Tories snd Itt British garrison. With a quick dash he landed, seised the forts, raised the American flag, released some American prisoners, and , captured six British vessels. A privatttr tf sixteen gun lay at anther In th pert, snd a British sloes of war hovered outside ; but they wore too tun. Heed to do anything. HANDEL'S TEMPER. i Sorely Tried by a Joker Who Knew tho Composer's Weakness. The celebrated composer Handel had such a remarkable Irritation of nerves that he could not bear to hear the tuning of instruments, and therefore this was always done tfefore he arrived at the theater. A musical wag who knew how to extract some mirth from Handel's Irascibility of temper stole into the orchestra on a night when tbe Prince of Wales was to be present md untuned all the instruments. As soon as the prince arrived Handel gave the signal of beginning, con spirito, but such was the horrible discord thst tbe enraged musician started up from his seat, and, having overturned a double bass, which stood in bis way, he seized a kettledrum, which he threw with such violence at the leader of the band that .he lost his full bottomed wig In tbe effort. Without waiting to replace it he advanced bareheaded to the front of the orchestra, breathing vengeance,
but. so much choked with passion that utterance was denied him. In this ridiculous attitude he stood staring and stamping for some moments amid a convulsion of laughter, nor could he be prevailed upon to resume his seat until the prince went in person and appeased his wrath.

They Didn't Liko Games. Shelley's view of games was approximately Swift's view that "games .re tbe recreations of people who do uot think." Tbe world he felt was so "full of a number of things" that It waa absurd to waste time on such trivialities as pegtops and marbles. Elderly gentlemen might appropriately play with marbles or pegtops (Just as elderly gentlemen nowadays play golf) in order to divert tbeir minds from anxiety as to tbe price of stocks and shares, but why should a boy do so when life lay like a fairyland, beginning at bis door and inviting him to explore?
