AT THE GENNETT A Plague of Rats WINNIPEG, Man. The brown rat has reached Winnipeg. According to the statistics of tbe department of agriculture of the province there is an area of 90 miles long abutting the United States on its northern frontier and 60 miles wide In which tbe rats have made their appearance. Mr. Golden, the deputy minister, estimates that the damage done this year by the brown rat is $1,000,000. and it will proportionately Increase unless the people generally awaken to the seriousness of the situation. According to the deputy minister, the rats in the province move in a radius of 15 miles each year, and he has compiled many valuable statistics relating to the rat. Two years ago the department conducted a series of Investigations and produced virus that it was thought would eiLnlnate the pest. There was quite a considerable amount of Interest at first, and many applications were made for the virus. Reports indicate that thousands of rats were destroyed by Its use, but that public interest lagged after a while, and no systematic method now

2 ALL NEXT WEEK. Afflicts Winnipeg l0M.O00 flMAKB THCM A DONE Br RATS seems to be followed by the farmers. Minister Golden conducted some interesting experiments at Gretna, a town a few miles from the frontier of the United states last year, to determine the amount of food the rat would consume a day. and at the same time to test the virus. The rats were caught and one of tbem received an injection of the virus. Within two days it died and the other rat, not having been provided with food, proceeded to devour its dead comrade. Within 24 hours it had consumed all of the dead rat with the exception of half an Inch of the tail, and it succumbed within a few hours to the poison which had been injected into the other rat. The Gaekwa? of Baroda is essentially a modern monarch. His palace is furnished In many respects quite like a New York mansion, he has a big bank in the capital of his state, which was organized by an American, his son is being educated in an American college, his wife is encouraged to go In for the "fripperies" beloved of American women and now the Gaek war has been named co-respondent in a suit for divorce! Some unhappy Englishman, not identified as yet, who wishes to be freed from his wife, claims tho .. fascinating Gaekwar is to blame for his domestic troubles. Through his attorney, the latter, although he doesnt bother to deny his connection with the case, claims loftily that being a prince of India, he is- outside the jurisdiction of the court. This idea the opposing counsel turns down flatly and the point Is being argued at great length. The Gaekwar, who Is well known ducing company, of which John Cort is President. The story of the play involves a debonaire young freebooter who has come into the management of his staid old father's bank, and who, in his effort to expand the business, resorts to various quastionable practices. There is a woman in the case, the wife of the prosecuting attorney of the Federal Government, who was once the sweetheart of the young broker, and whose husband is given to posing as an infallible moralist, and he allows his unjust jealousy to override his sense of legal justice. Mr. Klein illustrates the axiom that there is no gain .without risk. He shows that I men and women cannot make tre mendous gains without making tremendous Josses, and that success in fame and fortune does not always mean real success in life. St. Slair Stock Company. Get a 50 cent bottle of HTOMEI today and in case of an attack of croup pour 20 drops into a kitchen bowl of boiling water. Hold the child's head over the bowl so that it can breathe the soothing, penetrating vapor that arises. In tbe menatime send for a physician. The Value Life's Puzzles
UCH of life's daily story is made up of facing questions more or less perplexing. Now and then comes a call for a decision that plainly will largely shape one's future. Almost every moment raises a minor problem, and later years may show that the matter was by no means so trifling as it seemed. The process does not affect all alike. All are passing Judgment on an endless series of points But those without a serious purpose are hardly aware of this. They are used to following the line of least resistance. In consequence they decide so lightly as to be unconscious of having used their wills at all. On the other hand, for those with a keen sense of duty the burden often comes to seem very heavy. There is a temptation to seek to escape it. There is a longing at times for some authority that shall point out the right path after the manner of a guide-board without demanding any effort on tbe part of the traveler. One may become weary of being reminded that the Bible is a book of principles, not rules, and fancies what living might be if it were possible to turn to a given page for any emergency, and there read a definite, precise direction aa to the right course. Some persons take refuge In accepting a human authority, either one claiming such power or one that they themselves enthrone. Some earnest Christians have resorted to ways not unlike kinds of divination .known to other ages. The kind of guidance sometimes wished could doubtless have been provided. It has not been, and wisely, It must be believed. Scholars may find books that will give the right answers to their problems, but true teacbera do not encourage the use of such miscalled helps. Not only in getting tho answer, but learning the way to it, is of vital Importance in training. If reason is one of man's noblest endowments, to use it for worthy ends is one of his greatest glories. With tbe added light of revelation, with the illumination of the spirit, with God's special leading In dark places, the questions that still demand thought and study become one of the most valuable and blessed elements of life. To shun them would be to experience a loss not to be made good. Christian Endeavor World. Endowing City Churches. Many have felt during the last twenty-five years that the church was suffering at the expense of the colleges. Once great fortunes went to the church. In recent years they have been going to the universities and social foundations. Perhaps John S., Kennedy is responsible for the turn of the tide toward the churches again. He left large sums for church work. Morris K. Jesup left $100,000 to the brick Presbyterian church. Now comes the good news that Mrs. William Van Rensselaer Smith has given $100,000 to tbe First Presbyetrlan church, Brooklyn, as an endowment fund to help the church do its work in the future, amid changed condi tions. It stands close to the Church of the Pilsrims, where Doctor Storrs ministered j5o,long in a region. which Arrow TCotch COLLAR Easy to put on, easy to take off, easy to tie the tie in. One on Ingersoll. - The great agnostic, Robert G. Ingersoll, it is said, was one morning seated in a Washington city hotel, looking out of the great window, when a United States senator, coming in. said: "Mr. Ingersoll. I saw a sad thing a moment ago. I saw a man struggling across the crowded street on crutches, and I saw another man strike the crutches away from him. And Ingersoll rose with fingers twilfhfng and eyes flashing and said: "I should like to see the man. I would punish him." The United States senator put his hand on his shoulder and said: "That is what you , have been trying to do for years; striking away the crutches of people, the support of people in sorrow, the support of people in temptation." What glasses are to weak eyes. Caeca rets are to weak bowels a 10-eent box will truly amaze you. . Most old people must give to the bowels some regular help, else they suffer from constipation. The condition Is perfectly natural. It is just as natural as it is for old people to wttlk slowly. For age ia never so active as youth. The muscles are leas, elastic. And the bowels are muscles. So all old people need Cascarets. One might as well refuse to aid weak eyes with glasses as to neglect this gentle aid to weak bowels. The bowels must be kept active. This is important at all Ages, but never so much as at fifty. Age is not a time for harsh physics. Youth may occasionally whip the bowels into activity. But a lash can't be used every day.
