lockouts however necassary they may be lab extreme cases; and we are ready to Criticize the most extreme phases of Industrial conflict such as boycotts nd 'blacklists; but we leave the situation such that industrial disputes lead Inevitably to a state of industrial war in 'Which these are the only weapon left .to tho two combatants. No more clumsy or expensive method of determining the rate of wages and hours and conditions of labor could well be devised. At the moment when the discomforts and dangers incident to industrial strife are actually felt by the public, there is usually an outcry for th stabllshroent of some tribunal for the immediate settlement of tho particular dispute. But what is needed Is some system devised by patient and deliberate study in advance, that will meet these constantly occurring and ejearly forseeable emergencies not a nakeshift to tide over an existing crialtTNot during a rainstorm, but in fair weather should the leaking roof be examined and repaired. The magnitude and complexity of modern industrial disputes have put upon tome of our statutes and our present mechanism for adjusting such differences where we can be said to have any mechanism at all-r-a strain they were never intended to bear and for which they are unauited. What Is urgently needed today Js a reexamination of our laws bearing Upon the relations of employer and employe and a careful and discriminating scrutiny of the various plans which arc being tried in several of our own states and In other countries. This fcould seem to be the first natural step tn "bringing tibout an adjustment of fhese relations better suited to the fcewer conditions' of industry." fft- " ! MAKES WIFEY AIIGRY Because Hubby Is Fond of Lady Barbers.
(National Xows Association) CHICAGO, Feb. 2. Fondness for the company of "Lady Barbers," ' among whom he is known as "te angel," is given as one of her grounds for divorce in a bill by Mrs. Mary M. Arnold, on file in the county courts today against her husband, Alvan H. Arnold, a wealthy manufacturer. In the bill Mrs. Arnold declares that for eight years her husband has been so infatuated by the wiles and society of female tonsorial artists that he spends more time in "lady barber shops" than is required to get shaves and haircuts. It is alleged that after a particularly fine shave, Arnold gave Mrs. Daisy Mullen, head barber in a downtown fchop a tip of $$00 and told her to buy a shop of her own. ,
Spencer's Love Affair. Herbert Spencer never married. When he was twenty years old he had something like a tender affair, and he tells about it In his autobiography. The young lady's affections had already been placed elsewhere, and she was only playing with the buddiug philosopher. One day her "young man" called, and they all went out for a walk. Spencer says: "She, taking his arm, looked over her shoulder smilingly and rather mischievously to see what effect was produced on me, there being an evident suspicion that I should not be pleased. The revela-
j tion was not agreeable to me, but? still
it am not give me a snocK or a serious kind."
OH DING IT - 6. HOG SAW HIS SHADOW
This is Ground How Day, and This is Candlemas Day, and On Candlemas Day, if the sun appear There'll be two winters, in tho year. Undeterred by rabies, shot guns and slippery footing the arbiter of February and March weather appeared this morning and after one ground hogian grunt disappeared again into his hole to remain for six more weeks. Bad weather for six weeks is due. Strange what power a ground hog wields. Candlemas day, in popular parlance, is nothing more nor less than "groundhog day," "ground hog day" from the ranges of Hudson Bay to the pines of Carolina and from New England to California. According to the popular fable if Br'er Arctomys Monax, the ground-hog, creeps out of his hole between sunrise and high noon this day and sees its shadow outlined by the sunshine, the little animal promptly scampers back into its aperture and there remains for six weeks more. But if he fails to see his shadow, according to popular tradition, It is a sure sign that winter is practically over and there will be an early spring.
There is some dispute aa to the origin of Candlemas day, but most authorities are agreed that this ecclesiastical festival was instituted by Pope Gelasius in the year of 492 In commemoration of the presentation of Christ in the temple and of the purification of the Virgin Mary. February denotes pari lea tion and in this month the Romans performed the ceremony of purification of the people. When the Roman church changed this feaat of Prosperi ne, as it was called by the Romans, it retained the procession feature and associated the occasion with the purification of the Virgin. The festival is celebrated throughout the Christian world annually on February 2, and derives ita name from the fact that in the Roman Catholic churches candles are blessed on this day and carried in procession Va commemoration of the words of Simon spoken of the infant Christ, "A Light to Lighten the Gentiles."

A Demonstration by Crowd
of High School Boys.
Rhoderick Fitz-Dhu was a quitter and
got killed; Custer put up a good fight
and was killed. A crowd of fraternity
boys of this city made a demonstra
tion this noon, and their leader was
decapitated, figuratively and educationally.
This noon Benton Barlow with a
large pipe in his mouth and twentytwo other disgruntled fraternity sd non-fraternity boys marched proudly liorthward on North Ninth street to
ward the high school building. In
single file, with no apprehensive glances to the rear to see if papa was following, they marched. Fancy figures and marching formations of all kinds
were carried out until the building was reached. There the principal of tho high school, I. E. Neff, met the procession, and hat in hand waved back the blood thirsty throng. They backed. The leader was then called up and banished. Smoking within a square of the school building is a crime against the school statutes and for this offense Barlow was suspended. His fellow marchers were highly indignant, some even advising personal violence but quiet was observed in a short time by the ringing of the bell calling the pupils to recitations for the last half day of the school term.

No matter how healthy a human being may be it la safe to say that not many months are passed without some obstruction of the bowels, in other words, constipation, even if only temporary. The bloating, the dull feeling1 may start after the evening meal. If a laxative Is not taken that night it is certain that sleep will not be sound, and you will awaken unrefreshed. Hence, it is important for you and for all the members of your family that a aood, reliable laxative be always kept in the house for just such emergency. It la sure to be needed, and when needed you want It at hand. No family that lo careful of Its health can do without such a remedy. But the question of which remedy to have on band Is also of vast Importance. The laxative most highly recommended by the majority of intelligent Americans as being best for babies and grownups la Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pep
sin. It Is a liauld laxative-tonic, mild.
and never gripes, is effective on robust j people and can be given with safety to ' an infant. Children like it because of 1
these gentle qualities and because it Is pleasant to the taste. It is tho best all-around remedy you can have in tho bouse for any disorder of the stomach, liver and bowels, and
many people like Emma Blankenship,
Bedford. Ind., and H. O. Watson, Bowie. Ind., say they would as soon be without the necessities as without Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin. Anyone wishing to make a trial of thus remedy before buying it in tho regular way of a druggist at fifty cents or one dollar a large bottle (family else) can have a sample bottle sent to the home free of charge by simply addressing Dr. W. B. Caldwell! 406 Washington St. Monti cello. 111. Tour name and address on a postal card will do.
