The Theaters
"Over Night. "Over Night" was played to an amused and appreciative audience at the Gennett last evening. It Is the story of two young married couples starting, each unknown to the other, on their wedding journeys by way of the Hudson river, the man in one case, the woman in the other, leaving the boat to find something forgotten introductions having before been accomplished and the boat leaving them ashore. The complications that result make up the motive of the play, and the final stralghtenliiK out In a hotel further down the river where all have stopped, is brought about through laughable situations. The stars of the affair were Harry Sldat, as "Richard Kettle," the effeminate, undersized, sissiHed husband of
a large, Amazoniun "suffragette," and Augustus Cofette as the hotel clerk. The latter, indeed, seemed a bit out of place as the impudent clerk of a fcmall town he locked rather too much like, those magnificent young men who poise for tailor's models in the backs of the magazines. In a song to guitar accompaniment Mr. Coffette proved himself the possessor of a voice pf afireeabJe quality. In "Over Night," by the way, there is an admirable opportunity to contrast the conventional stage "comedy" with the genuine of the "Irish Players" in "The Building Fund." The former, billed as a comedy, but actually a farce, is built on the accept
ed lines that mark the construction of all contemporaneous plays of its class. Its as easy to put together a play of this sort, so far as its machinery Is concerned, as to build a house on the early Hicbmond plan parlor, sittingroom, dining-room and kitchen downstairs, with an ell in which is insinuated the sitting-room door, with three bed-rooms and a bath above. To furnish this house artistically bo it will make an appeal to the average visitor Is, of course, the test of its attractiveness. The frame-work of the play is filled up, in this Instance, with the usual two married couples who get twisted up, the lovers who have a misunderstanding but fall into each other's arms before the fall of the curtain, the maiden of uncertain age who fancies herself beloved when she isn't and the usual minor farcical incunabula hanging on the fringes. It is played right over the footlights at the audience, its jokes are hurled like bombs over the dividing-line to explode at random, and its "business" is apropos, well done and transparent. 1 A representative farce in short not a comedy. Comedy presents life in its entirety not In sections. Farce is a caricature of life. ' Comedy a portrait. Comedy is a masquerader beneath his brilliantly-hued costume mocks the grim tragedy of existence. "Over Night" is a farcical trifle that pleases the average theater-goer but sustains no particular relation to dramatic art. E. G. W.

The Chines Get Them With a
Net and a Decoy Bird. Every year, according to nu old custom, in the second quarter of the September or October moon, the inhabitants of jtie Chinese province of Shantung go Co Mongolia to hunt the eagles which abound in that region. The huntsmen march lu troops ulons the roads, carrying ou their shoulders long poles from which are suspended their baggage and provisions and on which aru perched tame eagles to be used as decoys. The hunters make use of a large net. spread open on the ground uud baited with small dried fishes, in the midst of which is placed u tame eagle. The decoy naturally begins to devour the bait and thus invites its wild cousins
to follow its example. When the birds have alighted and are feediug the hunter, from his biding place two or three hundred yards distant, qufckly closes the ne by means of cords and thus captures the eagles. Eagle hunting is very lucrative. The feathers are used .in the manufacture of fans and are sold at u bijib price even in China. There are three sorts Kicpet. black with white centers; Chema. white spotted with black; Toutsing, half white and half black. Several eagles contribute to the making of a fan. for only a small part of the plumage can be utilized; hence these fans are very costly.

because we are becoming acquainted with simple physiological laws. When
the first aging marks appear wrink

Perfumed Baths. The most notable feature of the fashion today is the remarkable extent to which perfume Is being used in baths. Another modern fashion is the burning of perfumes in rooms. Perfumes hare, of course, been burned in this way for ages', but of late there has been a remarkable revival of the custom, and there are now on the market ingenious little lamps. There has to be no flame. The perfume is brought from the reservoir to the surface by an ordinary wick and there 'volatilized by a red hot needle. Orieutal scents, which are composed chiefly of sums and spices, are used for tSe purpose.
