Ward meetings and primaries are
As long as the present form of government exists in this country it will of necessity be a partisan government. This may he right or wrong, yon may like it or not like it but as things go now it Is a matter of fact. Along about election time people begin to wonder why it is that the men they are voting for do not measure up to the standard which they think a candidate should measure up to. They wonder why the platform and the party promises do not meet with their approval more generally. This feeling of dissatisfaction has grown especially in the last few years. But while people are willing to grumble when the time comes for them to vote they are not so willing to get at the root of the matter. This state has some very vicious election laws, some very unsatisfactory primaries, half the business and the most important business of the parties is transacted In a way which admita of machination and twistings. But for all that it is the greater reason why the men down in the ranks should be on hand to take care that delegates are Instructed by them and not by the domination of designing men.
On Friday the preliminary organisation takes place in Wayne county for the formation of the Republican party machinery- If men who will complain later stay at home they will have the privilege of complaining later. If they do stay at home they can depend upon It that others who have selfish interests at heart will be there rain or shine, wet or dry weather or hot or cold.
We are most of us progressive in this part of the country. We are insurgents. We are people who believe that the popular government should be restored. We admire La Follette and Theodore Roosevelt and other progressive leaders. But as a matter of fact this admiration does not go very far when it comes to getting results unless this admiration is put into results. If there are ward meetings be at the ward meeting and see that it goes your way see that there are enough men there to get a really representative result. Ward meetings are the beginnings of .government. If it is a primary be sure that you know who you are voting for and what he represents and be sure that he is tied up with promises which it will be hard for him to break or else that he is a man who can be left unInstructed with safety. . But do not wait and complain that the party machinery is not in your possession. If you are for Taft see that the man is a Taft man. If you are not a Taft man Bee that the man is not a Taft man. If you are for any change in the party policy bring the matter up at a ward meeting and thrash it out bo that it can really be said that this is representative government. If it is for control of the party machinery be sure that the man is a representative man and that you do not vote for him because you like the color of his eyes. From this time on till the fall of this year it will be a good thing if you will keep your eyes on the papers for announcements of ward meetings and primaries That is a good thing to keep in your mind on Friday.

BROWNING'S "SORDELLO." Mystery ef Thst "Colossal Deroliot en the Oooan ef Poetry." The Impenetrable nature of Robert B.'ownlng's "Sordello." published in 184A "a colossal derelict on the ocean of poetry." as William Sharp terms it. has been the theme of many anecdotes. Tennyson declared, writes Lilian Whiting in "The Brownings Their Life and Art," thst there were only two lines in it the opening snd the closing ones which he understood, snd "they are both lies." he feelingly added. Douglas Jerrold tackled it when he wss just recovering from an illness and despairingly set down his inability to comprehend it to the probability that his mind was impaired by disease, and, thrusting the book into the bands of his wife, he entreated her to read it at once. He watched her breathlessly, snd when she exclaimed, "I don't know what this means; it is gibberish." Jersold exclaimed, "Thank God, I gm not an Idiot." A French critic, Odysse Bsrot, quotes a passage where the poet says. "God gars man two faculties," and adds. "I wish while he was about it God bad supplied another namely, the power of understanding Mr. Browning." Mrs. Carlyle declared that she read "Sordello" sttentively twice, but was unable to discover whether the title referred to Ma man, a city or a tree." SNAKES ARE USEFUL They Are Chock Upon the Lessor Reptiles ef the Tropics. What is the use of snskes? In their "going on their belly," the circumstance that so offended Bacon, lies one of their greatest uses, because that, together with -their internal formation and external covering, enables them to penetrate where no larger carnivorous animal could venture, into dark and noisome morasses, bog jungles, swamps amid the tangled vegetation of the tropics, where swarms of the lesser reptiles, on which so many of them feed, wonld otherwise outbalance the harmony of nature. Wondronsly and exquisitely con structed for their habitat, they are able to exist where the higher animals could not, and. while they help to clear those inaccessible places of the lesser vermin, they themselves supply food for a number of the smaller mammalia, which, with many carnivorous birds, devour vast numbers of young snakes. The hedgehog, weasel. Ichneumon, fat, peccary, badger, goat, bog and aa immense number of birds keep snakes within duo limits, while the latter perform their part among the grain devouring aad .herbivorous lesser creaturea. JN HISTORY" A FASCINATING SPORT. The Hold Aviation Tskos on Those Who Have Ever Tried It. Flying is a sport that truly exemplifies one of the greatest Darwinian theories. Only the fittest survive. It taxes one's physical resources. It makes tremendous demands upon one's nervous assets. It sharpens one's intellect. It develops one's faculty of judgment 'It demands the very best a man of the best type can bring to it The better the man, the better the ..aviation sportsman. For this very reason the sport has attracted men of the finest type that have ever Indulged in sport. It is for this very reason that the world has been amazed at the high Intellectual type of human that has embarked In this activity. For this reason I call it the klngllest of sports. Mo one who has ever flown an aeroplane can be induced to abandon It utterly. The craving to fly will survive with the man who has thrilled in response to the sensation of driving his own craft The strange, wild, almost uncanny, exhilaration of rushing through the air like a bird cannot be put Into words by a clumsy architect of sentences like the present writer. It takes a poet like D'Annunzlo to tell the story properly. Clifford B. Harmon In Country Life In America. How a Woman May Retain Her Youth "The woman who wants to look young must taboo massage creams and liquid rouge. She will only harden the structure of her face and destroy the fine texture of the skin," said Mrs. Margaret Holmes Bates, the wellknown author, to a Chicago Journal representative. Reputable physicians have declar ed that if she indulges in artificial methods she risks losing her health," she continued. A perfectly natural method of treating a bad complexion is by using ordinary mercollzed wax; this adds nothing to the complexion, but removes it instead. This wax, obtainable at any drug store, flakes off the sallow or blotchy outer skin in fine particles, gently, without harming the skin beneath, which gradually makes its appearance. The brilliantly beautiful complexion thus obtained is a new one quite different from a patcbed-up old complexion. This is one way to retain youthful looks. An ounce of mercolised wax is sufficient It is applied at night like cold cream and washed off in the morning. OUR COFFEE ' Is Roasted Every Day at the o Store It Will Please You e H. fc. Hadley

Thinking Whila Asleep. It is rather startling to hear that man thinks as intelligently asleep as awake, but no WSs an authority than Sir Arthur Mitchell admits that thinking is essential to life, says the Chicago Tribune. Thinking when we SleeD mav be different from whan to'o are awake, bat the process goes on j just the same. Man cannot think un- j less he is alive, and he cannot be alive without thinking. Dreams are not as confused as we think. They become confused from the standpoint of memory, but are not from the point of the dream organ. Memory half blurred in trying to recall them makes dreaming seem confused. Dreams born under normal conditions are normal. It is only those that are created under abnormal conditions that are strange, for, as Cicero said: "It cannot be doubted the number of true dreams would be greater if we were to fall asleep in a better condition. Filling ourselves with wine and flesh obscures our dreams." Hitch In tho System. A Boston tramp has begging reduced to a system. He has his regular customers. He knocked at the door of a house. The owner came out As soon as he saw the tramp be said: "Now, look here; last week I gave you a nickel to stay away for ten days, and here you are back again." The tramp put his hand to his forehead and was lost in thought for several minutes. Then he said: "You are right colonel. Your assessment does not come due for a week yet When I get back to my counting room I'll pay off my head bookkeeper and discharge him. He has neglected to give you the proper credit on the ledger." New York American. Ant Strength. An English scientist weighed a small ant and a dead grasshopper which it was dragging to its nest. The weight of the grasshopper was found to be sixty times greater than that of the ant The force exerted by the ant in dragging the grasshopper along the road was therefore proportionately equal to that of a man weighing 150 pounds pulling a load of four and onehalf tons or a horse of 1,200 pounds a load of thirty-six tons. If the trouble was of such a nature that it attacks your sensitive nerves and gave you severe pain you would perhaps regard it of more importance and seek prompt relief. But do not forget that it is doing you just as much harm and damaging your nervous system as much as though you felt it. It is affecting those nerves which regulate the functions of your pelvic organs and doing you more damage than though it caused pain. Such symptoms indicate that something is wrong. Steam shovels are eating their way into the birthplace of Nellie Custls, granddaughter of Mrs. George Washington and ward and adopted daughter of Washington. For years the shovels have been biting trainloads of yellow clay out or the fields of Abingdon as this estate was named by John Parke Custls, son of Mrs. Washington and this clay has been molded and baked into brick for the upbuilding of Washington city. Year by year tho shovels have dug nearer to the old and battered frame house where the most popular woman of the late revolutionary and the early republican eras came into the world and where her childhood was spent. Now the deep clay pits are but a few yards from the house and probably not many months will pass when the house will be no more. The clsy exhausted and the level of the fields reduced about thirty feet, the place may be converted into railroad yards by the Washington Southern railroad the Washington-Richmond line. Abingdon was a great estate, but the house was never a noble bit Of building, according to an exchange. ple though plain dwelling with the Idea that later he would erect a house In keeping with his wealth and standing In the community. Abingdon being a Custis home, was directly or remotely associated with nearly all the colonial and revolutionary families in Virginia, and Maryland. The house waa built by John Parke Custis in 1778. It stands about 300 yards back from the Potomac river and about three milea south of Washington. John Parke Custis was descended from John Custis, who came to Virginia from Holland In 140. The son of this immigrant, John Custls II, built Arlington house in Northampton county. Virginia, naming It after Henry, tho earl of Arlington, who, with Lord Culpeper, held Virginia under patent from Charles II. Young Custls bought from Gerald Alexander 1,100 acres of land, part ot which is now Arlington National cemetery. He built Abingdon House and there in 1779 Eleanor Parke Custis (Nellie Custis) was born. John Parke Custis, an aid on Washington's staff, died at Yorktown In 1781 snd Washington adopted Nellie and her young brother, George Washington Parke Custis. The' children thereafter made their home at Mount Vernon. Nellie remained there till she became the wife of Lawrence Lewis, Washington's sister's son. and George Washington Parke Custis remained there till the death of Mrs. Washington, in 1802. Abingdon House is now occupied, by the foreman of the brickmaking company and his family.
