Those Who Hear La

Senator Robert Marion La Follette will be in Richmond on Saturdayevening, January 6, 1912. He will be the guest of the Hoosier Srate Progressive League. He will come here to set the principles that he stands for squarely before the people of this community. No man in public life has been more misunderstood than La Toilette, the choice of the Republicans of Wisconsin for Vnite'l States Senator. No man has been more consistently and ;jroIoneeiIy lied about than Senator La Follette. The reason for this is nor e ause Senator La Follette has been hard to understand or bor-ause his n-tiuis hnve been difficult of comprehension. His life has been simple and open; his (nurse of action direct; his spoken word In exact accordance with his dc d ; his promises unbroken His plan of action has been uhvas to ect the facts and then to act after mature deliberation on as just a basis as could possibly be declared. This done he has been as uneompromipirn; as flint and utraightforward as an Atlantic type of locomotive.

And what has been th result? A certain class of individuals in this country have at every opportunity sought to maintain that. La Kollette is corrupt, dissolute, dangerous, self-seeking, a liar, a cheat, a h po ri ', a d m.ivoc, a destroyer, a nincompoop, flighty, a man on horseback, a weaklir.tr, a maniac, a thief, unsteady, demoniac. At the same time that he is credited wit ti the greatest power for machination in laying plots to destroy this govt rnment he is asserted to have put forth the silliest proposals, ill-considered, immature, visionary.

All these things miulit tie conceived of the same man but it is quite unlikely tha. they could be true. In the case of ordinary politicians we have most of us come to discount the spoken word and rely on the deed. "What Is a man's record?" we ask. Well, there was Jim Watson. His speeches can hardly be excelled in oratorical ability and no crowded hall ever was better pleased with his speeches than those in Richmond in his early days. Jim Watson would still draw a crowd a bin crowd in Richmond. Rut jeople in Richmond and all over the district know Jim Watson s record. And it Is because of Jim Watson's record and not on account of any falling off in his oratorical powers that Jim Watson failed to hold the confidence of the people of this district.

It seems to have been the other way with Bob La Follette. From the time when he was a young man in Wisconsin as a prosecutor he has run on his record. His record as a prosecutor was such as to embitter Boss Keyes. Rut he wont to congress on his record The first man in Wisconsin that ever went to congress that Ross Keyes opposed. As a congressman he stood on his record and when he returned from congress beaten by a Democratic landslide which swept the state in days in which parties and not men and their records were the test his record stood him instead. It stood him instead when he refused a bribe from Philetus Sawyer, the lumber king, and his word was sufficient to combat a most complete organization of special privilege which owned newspapers, public men and their public utterances by the hundreds. As a governor his record was so open and simple that the most heart, breaking attacks couldn't shake the confidence of the people. For this reason he was able to enlist their aid in breaking down the machine and Its control he was able to put into effect the public service commission law.

As a result of La Follettc's work and influence Wisconsin stands today as a model state It has taken him year after year of soul-tearing work. And when the people sent him to the senate it was because of his record.

That in this hard struggle La Follette has made bitter enemies stands to his credit. A prosecutor friendly with men who should be prosecuted; a congressman friendly with selfish men seeking special privilege; a governor friendly with railroads desiring immunity from state control; a senator friendly with those desiring land steals, fortune making bounties, find all the many steals possible in a nation's laws these things were all possible to La Follette. These are the things he might have been. In return for them he could have had a fortune but he is poor. In return for them he might have had flattery from the thousands of insincere, bought and kept newspapers but he has had abuse and malignant attacks. He might have had all that money can supply a man but he has not.

As for what La Follette believes it is not different from what hundreds and hundreds of honest, law abiding, God fearing men in this community are believing and saying but the great point about what La Follette says is that he lives up to It. That is the reason that hearing is believing with those who hear La Follette.

A Winning Price Mark. A New Tork merchant, in speaking about his early experiences in the retail business, said: "I made four ventures In a small way, three of which were, if not failures, unsuccessful. It was the custom in those days to mark all goods with a cost and a selling mark, and the former was essential because the latter was not always lived up to. It was elastic, the one price system being Impossible because of competition. My first cost mark was 'God my helpr, each letter representing a numeral. Then I had 'Mark honest' The third mark employed was 'Fulmeasure,' but I had no luck nntil I changed my cost mark to Makeprofit.' "New York Tribune. The English parliament may be a tolerably well behaved body, but not all the British parliaments can boast of their manners. In Sydney, Australia, Mr. Willis, the speaker, has to keep an eye on the books which mem bers hurl at him.

Not Saving Them. Three men, one a German, were smoking together and talking over the topics of the times. An odor not of cigars detracted somewhat from the interest in the conversation and soon became almost unbearable. The German apparently did not mind it, but the other two men began looking around for the cause of the odor, when one of them discovered that it came from the burning cigar band which their German friend had left on his cigar. "Excuse me, Heinrlch," he said. "Your cigar band is buruing." "Ach, dank you. olt man," the German replied. "I'm not saving dem." Housekeeper. While a United States warship was ! off Barbados a few years ago a sailor i who was amusing himself fishing for i sharks brought up from the depths a j long "chnrchwarden"' pipe that evi-1 dently had been lying at the bottom of the sen for a hundred years or more. It was unbroken and had either been accidentally dropped overboard or washed out of some old wreck. The coral insects had seized upon it and covered the long stem with delicate, lacelike branches and the bowl with fine "vermicelli" work. So completely was it concealed with the coral coating that it was Impossible to determine the original material of the pipe. Oddly enough, the inside of the bowl bad been left untouched and still showed the stains of tire and nicotine. New York Press. Hope. Hope Is anticipation. These Are Plain Facts

Now. when nearly everybody is couching, it is well to know the plain truth about coughs and colds. Since coughs are caused by irritation of the sensitive lining of the bronchial tubes, the only way to cure a co-.:th is to stop that inflammation. The only way to do that is through the blood by making it richer so that it ill nourish and soothe the inflamed, tender tissues. Instead of cough syrups we always recommend that sterling blood and strength renewer, Vinol. It is a delicious cod liver and iron preparation without oil and actually cures coughs, colds and bronchitis by building up the whole system. Mis Bessie Mathes, Lynchburg. S. c , says.
