CHRISTMAS Dime IS EVEIIUF YEAR Housewives Makes Special Effort to Please Value of Color Scheme.
In every home the Christmas dinner table will be the center of interest on Christmas Day, at least it will share the honors with the Christmas tree. Whether the table is laid for a large company or guests, or only the members of the family are to be gathered about the board, whether the home be rich or poor, the housewife Is sure to expend her best effort to make the meal the most attractive f all the year. The Christmas dinner in Richmond Is usually served early in the afternoon. The menu generally conceded s particularly appropriate to the great feast day of the year, is far too heavy to serve late in the evening, especially If It be a family dinner, when the children will of course be at the table. The usual Chriutmas program for the American family is church in the morning with dinner at 2 o'clock and the remainder of the day given over to a quiet home afternoon, with perhaps a Christmas tree in the evening, or a visit of a few intimate friends. Whether the dinner be formal or informal the best linen cloth will grace the board. If the dinner Is an elaborate function and there are guests, the hostesB, if she is fortnuate to possess It, will use a cloth of fine old lace over cloth of gold, a new paper fabric which, gleaming through the meshes of the lace, stimulates gold cloth. Some tables will probably have a covering of holly crepe paper with crepe paper napkins, but nothing is quite so refined or elegant as a handsome linen cloth with napkins to match. A table so spread and decorated with red and green will fairly radiate the ChristmaB spirit and Christmas cheer. For a simple informal dinner, an effective decoration would be a large bunah of holly placed in the center of the table in a low vase or fern dish and tied with a flowing bunch of acarlet ribbon. A spray of holly at each cover would complete a pretty decorative scheme or the ends of the sprays might be Joined to form a complete circle of green about the table. A blooming poinsetta plant in a pot, the pot conceared with red crepe paper, would make an attractive centerpiece for a simple home dinner. Many housewives will probably use nothing more pretentious than a little fern, in the decoration of the table. If a fern dish happens to be among the Christmas gifts it will of course occupy the place of honor at the feast. An effective and inexpensive decoration for the table would be a low mound of holly and mistletoe used as a centerpiece with sprays of either at the covers. For an elaborate formal dinner, a nowy cloth patterned in mistletoe or holly, a centerpiece of glossy holly leaves and brilliant red berrier, silver candelabra and silver bon bon dishes, would be appropriate and dignified. The centerpiece might be a flat wreathe of holly tied with bows of ribbon. A similar wreath should encircle each candelabrum. A silver or cut glass bowl of holly and meteor roses, or holly and mistletoe, may be set within the wreath to complete the centerpiece. The-outllne of the Christmas star may be used instead of the wreath and the bows of ribbon omitted. The place cards in such a scheme might be either bells, stars, holly or Ivy leaves cut out and ornamented with Christmas verse or greetings. Appropriate favors would be little silk stocklngB of bon bona at each cover. Even if the dinner is only for the members of the family there will be some pretty Christmas favors to brighten the table. A simple plan would be to use holiday cards with appropriate sentiments. More elaborate would be crepe paper baskets filled with candy for the women, and crepe paper canes for the men. Other pretty favors that may be obtained in the shops are tiny candy boxes with a snowball and a spray of holly on the top, red sleds with holly, FEARFUL BURR ITCH WAS CURED By Cuticura Soap and Ointment, Another Man Had Itching on Scalp. Hair Fell Out, Leaving Bald Spots. Now Hair Has Grown, Thanks to Cuticura Soap and Ointment. "I deem it my duty to tell about a cure that the Cutlrur Soap and Ointment have xnado on myself. My trouble began in splotches breaking out right in the edge of my Lair on the forehead, and spread over the front part of the top of my head from car to ear, and over my ears which reused a most fearful burning itch, or eczema. For thrre years I had this terrible breaking out on m j forehead and scalp. 1 tried our family doctor and he failed to cure It. Then I tried the Cuticura Soap and Ointment and used them for two months with the result of a complete cure. Cuticura Soap and Ointment should hare the credit due, and I have advised a lot of people to use them." (Signed) C. D. Tharrlngton, Creek, N. C, Jan. 26. 1911. "I will say that I have been suffering with an itching on my scalp for the pat few years. My hair feU out in spots all over my head. My scalp started to trouble mo with sores, then the sores healed up, and crusts formed on the top. Then the hair fell out and left roe three bald spots the hap of a half dollar. I went to more than one doctor, but could not get any relief, so 1 started to use the Cuticura Remedies. I tried one oar of Cuticura Soap and some Cuticura Ointment, and felt relieved right away. Now the bald spots have disappeared, and my hair baa grown, thanks to the Cuticura Soap and Ointment. I highly recommend the Cuticura Remedies to all that are (ufrertnr with scalp trouble." Jack Horner pies, snow men, and little red satin coats with holly boutonniers. The menu will be simple or elaborate according to the nature of the dinner and the number who will assemble around the board. If an elaborate function oysters will be the first course and a pretty garnish of green will carry out the general holiday effect, a bit of parsley will float in each soup dish and if stick bread is used it may be tied with red baby ribbon to carry out the color scheme of red and green. Whether the dinner be simple or elaborate the turkey will still form the piece de resistance of the meal. It will be elaborately garnished with holly and to complete the tempting picture a huge dome of creamy white mashed potatoes may be smoothed high in a tureen and mounted with a touch of green leaves. The salad course for an elaborate dinner may be either shrimp or lobster. The pink of the shrimp will contrast prettily with the green lettuce arranged around the outside of each plate. If lobster salad is served some of the red meat of the claws may be chopped up to give a sprinkling of color. For a simple dinner the green of lettuce and red of tomatoes will combine in a pretty salad that will harmonize in the general color scheme. As the culminating event of the meal a plum pudding should be ushered in with all ceremony. Many of the canned plum puddings are considered wholesome and are to be commended for their richness of flavor, but nothing can equal the fresh, moist home made pudding put together from a i standard recipe and turned out of the bag steaming hot on the platter. The plum pudding in this country is frequently retired in favor of the popular mince pie. Finally, the ideal Christmas dinner is completed by a handsome dish piled high with fruits and nuts. Newbro's Herpicide
FOOLS THE CALENDAR Don't look older than you are. It is just as easy to look younger. While lack of hair or poor hair is not always an indication of age, it is frequently accepted as such. A person well advanced in years possessing a good head of hair is always spoken of as ' well preserved." Everyone can retain beautiful, luxuriant hair if they make the effort. In almost every instanc e poor bair or the loss of hair may be traced to the activity of the dandruff germ. Newbro's Herpicide kills this germ and puts the fecalp in a perfectly healthy condition. With the destruction of the dandruff germ the hair no longer drops out. The itching of the scalp stops almost at once. Newbro's Herpicide is the original remedy for which there are many substitutes, preparations claimed to be ' just as good." You don't have to accept a substitute. Insist upon having genuine Herpicide. For sale by all druggists. Applications obtained at good barber shops. The Aborn company numbers one hundred persons in its double cast, large chorus and orchestra, and travels by special trains including several carloads of scenery, costumes and effects. At the Murray. The following is taken from the Philadelphia Ledger of recent date. The star feature of the vaudeville part and forsooth the star feature of the whole show is a one-act melo-dra-matic comedy entitled "Huckin's Run" as played by the Walsh, Lynch & Co. It tells the story of an East Side youth marooned in a cross roads town, where he falls in love with an orphan and saves her from the clutches of a man who would rob her of a mine. The slang is good and contrasted with the country dialect, very funny. The act was received with great favor by an autdienc that packed the house. "Huckins Run" will be the feature at the Murray during the coming week. Besides this feature there are several other acts worthy of being featured on any bill. Al Wing Foe presents a number of tricks of magic, whilst Eldora, one of the world's greatest jugglers assisted by a clever comedian present a comedy and sensational heavy weight juggling act, that is nothing short of marvelous, an act that is replete with startling maneuvers and shows astonishing skill. Herbert and Willin in a black face singing and dancing act, will doubtless furnish a great many of the laughs of the show. They have an act that is full of clean, comedy and with all new songs and a line of jokes that are entriely original. The Murray scope as usual concludes the performance. If youare troubled with chronic constipation, the mild and gentle effect of Chamberlain's Tablets makes them especially suited to your case. For sale by all dealers. THE C0MST0CK LODE. A Strike" That Was Destined te Influence the World's Finances. "You've struck it. boys'" Thus said Henry Paige Comstock to Peter O'fiiley and Patrick McLaughlin, who were his fellow prospectors in a search for gold in Six Mile canyon, near the present Virginia City, then capital of Nevada. The date was June 10, 1S59. In that remote spot in the American wilderness by these three obscure men was made on that day a discovery destined to affect the current of American politics for a score of years and to have for long a disturbing influence on the world's finances. The thing which was "struck" on that June day of ISot) was the vein covering what came to be known as the Comstock lode, in which were hidden the richest deposits of silver ever found anywhere on the globe. Their development years afterward simultaneously with that of the silver mines of Colorado started the downward flood in the price of silver which broke the old ratio between the money metals, changed the monetary system of the leading nations from the double to the single gold standard, incited the movement, beginning in 1S77 under the leadership of Richard P. Bland, for the reopening of the mints to silver on the same terms as to gold, led hence to the passing of the BlandAllison limited silver coinage law of 1878 and to that of the Sherman silver bullion deposit act of 1890 and was the issue which split the two great parties and made havoc among the smaller ones in 1S9G, resulting In the act of 1900 which gave statutory recognition to the gold standard in the United States. THE EARTH'S CHANGES. What the Fossil Remains of Plants and Animals Tell Us. There was a time when even the polar regions bloomed with many of the splendid and varied forms of life that now adorn the tropics. The fossil remains of these ancient forms preserved in the bosom of the rocks carry us back perhaps millions of years in the earth's history and show clearly what wonderful revolutions the surface of the globe has undergone since the first plants and the first animals appeared upon it Who would think of meeting a rhinoceros nowadays on the prairies of northw-estern Canada unless perhaps a traveling menagerie should pass that way? Yet at one time, as discoveries of recent years prove, a creature closely resembling the rhinoceros of India and Africa dwelt in that now comparatively cold, snowy and barren region. Remains of these extinct ancestors of an animal that in our day thrives only in the tangled tropical forests and under the hot equatorial sun have been found buried in the Canadian rocks, where now the cold blasts of winter blow over treeless plains and sweep the flanks of ice incrusted mountains. The rhinoceros of that remote age was no less formidable a beast than its descendants, for the skull of one of the skeletons discovered is three feet long, while some of Its teeth are four inches across. The fossil remains of many other forms of animals have been found in the same region within recent years. Harper's Weekly.
