OPPOSE CELEBRATION Of Christmas as Is the Custom Now.

To make an effort to guard against Allowing commercialism to creep into the local celebration of Christmas, was the decision reached this morning, after the Kev. T. J. Graham had read a paper before the Richmond Ministerial association on the mibject of "The Significance of Christmas." The consensus of opinion among the pastors seemed to be that unless some action twas taten by the leaders of the church loon, the holiday festivities would become entirely separate from any association with the Christian church. 1 In pointing out the growth and deTclopment of the celebration now in vo.(ue here. Rev. Graham stated that Chidstmas Is now a combination of

pagin and Christian ideas, and that the itagin ideas were growing stronger constantly. He asserted that the churctx now offers nothing to interest the ptiftMlc in the religious observation of the day and, by inactivity is allow-

E

Ing commercialism to dominate the celebration. Following the address. Rev. Lightbourn, of St. Paul's Episcopal church, recommended that the ministers keep "Santa Claus out of the Church." It

was noted that Santa was gradually I taking the place of the true concep- j tion of Christmas, and some of the ' pastors suggested that special church I

services on Christmas would have considerable influence in combating the commercial inroads.

Men Wear Combs. The traveler in India is surprised to see that men wear combs in their hair much more than women do. A Cingalese gentleman wears what we know as the circular comb and a very ornamental buck comb of tortoise shell to gather his curly locks together. He wears a full beard also, but his servant must trim bis own beard and is only allowed to wear the circular comb.

A Fire Threat. The train was full of fierce robbers. Strong men sat in the seats of the cars and held their hands as high as possible. Women trembled and wept, with

the exception of the spectacled young j

A New Us. Quito a novel method of announcing an engagement was that employed by a clever young lady in the west. She telegraphed a girl friend in Boston: "Solomon, six. three." Looking np that chapter and verse the friend read: "I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine." Boston Transcript.

Another of our cherished Ideas will soon be no more. The leech has been deposed from its sovereignty and its "passing" form sthe subject of an article in the Mois litteraire et pittoresque by Jacques Boyer. who tells us that prior to 1S70 a dozen whole sale houses in Paris were en-

! paged in the traffic of this "giblet

liharmaceutitique," and that they sold between 300. 000 and 00.000 a month

at the rate of 250 francs or 10 thousand. One house alone survives and the number sent out is 130,000.' and the price ehas fallen to about 19 francs a thousand.
