Copyright, 1908, by Edwin A.Nye MOTHER'S APRON STRINGS. To be tied too closely to mother's apron strings may prove disastrous to child. It depends upon the mother and upon the length and substance of the strlDgs. Surely a mother must bold her children to herself by the bonds of affection else they may stray far. But she must not tie them too closely. She must give them rope. The apron strings should enough and they should be Ions stretch enough so that the children will not feel the constant tension of mother's hold on them. Give the children freedom. If a child does not enjoy rational freedom It can never grow Into strength of character. It must learn to cboose and to decide for Itself. It must learn to act Independently and to take the consequence of Its action. Loosen the strings. The child that feels the apron strings drawn taut and fast must lead a narrow existence. It ought to learn wisdom by experience, and no matter bow wise the mother she cannot substitute her own wisdom. Individuality Is a great force, and Individuality Is built up by the Individual who is forced to think and act for himself. As much as possible let the child do for Itself. Ever see bear cubs at play? The mother you may be sure is not far away. She keeps an eye on the cubs, all right, but she does not let them see that she is watching. Her apron strings are long and expansive. The cubs gambol and wrestle and tumble. Even when they fight the mother apparently pays no attention. But When there Is danger or a real necessity the mother bear quickly rounds up her children. Wise bear! Let the children play and wrestle and get dirty. And even should they fight do not interfere too quickly. In case of real necessity the child will come to the mother the better way. Mother's apron strings should be of rubber-llko material. And when there is a real need there ahould be no sudden jerk, only a gen- ' tie, wise pulling In. This JsMy 65th Birthday 8TEPHEN 8. GREGORY. 8tephen S. What Shall We Call
Last Monday at the cabinet meeting of the mayor with the heads of his departments the question came up as to what we shall call the park which lies to the east of the city. Shall it be: The Glen? Glen Miller? Glen Miller Park? Glen Park? The discussion of this subject came up on account of the necessity for knowing what bhould be planted in a bed of flowers which will tell the passerby what the city officials think the name of the park ought to be. Our own notion on this is that people will call it whatever they have been accustomed to call It. The same principle obtains here whether it is the case of the Society of Friends "commonly called Quakers" or whether it be a small boy whose name is Augustus Caesar Jones, known to his friends as "Gus," "Gussie," or "Jonesey." It will be very hard to settle this matter of names. For instance the whole American nation knows there is only one Teddy but falls into confusion over trying to associate so common a name as Bill with the present incumbent of the White House.
But we must take exception with the gentleman who intimated that fiimrily because the city purchased the tract of land from Col. Miller that it was under no obligations to continue the name. Glen Miller is not called Glen Miller because it was bought for a price from Col. Miller. That is not the reason for one minute. The reason is that a considerable number of citizens in the good days when Richmond was a small garden spot, where everyone knew everyone else and his personal affairs; the name of his dog; when everyone went to everyone else's weddings and funerals, and carried good things to eat to those who happened to be under the weather whole parties used to go out on long summer evenings to Glen Miller and picnic. There was a mill there then an old ramshackle affair on which the weathers had played until it had become a soft gray and over which trailed (if we are not mistaken) trumpet vines and Virginia creepers. Thus many a heart cherishes memories of Glen Miller, which not all the resolutions of any body of men the Russian Duma or the United States Senate can alter. It was Glen Miller then it will always be so. For somewhere in woman's memory lingers always the time when she was a young girl with all life ahead of her. Things little things make a big difference then thus it is that the changing of the name of a landmark is something which does not lie in the province of a few men to change arbitrarilyGlen Miller should be Glen Miller to the last and it will be. The street names of Richmond are far too reminiscent of convict cells letters and numbers. Shall we extend this to our parks also say Park Zero for Glen Miller Park Park Number One for Starr Park, etc. It may seem a very small thing but it is these lingering vestiges of human memory that lie behind us that make Personality and Richmond can not afford to lose what it has! If only our A's, B's and C's, as street names, had been even Adams, Benton and Custer down to "V," which stands for Voorhees, Vail or Victoria, we would have had a little more cover on the naked ugliness of our machinery for street names. There would have been more personality to linger in men's lives and less of this dreary and regular existence, that Strick Gillllan tried to break when he called a certain block on South Fourteenth, "Joy Square." A certain personality sticks out in the Doran Bridge, a memory clothes Elliott's Mills. A tract of land south of the Country Club should be Buhl's woods to the end of the chapter. Why? Simply because too much of real life the things that are close to the heart are tied up in names. Wherever we got the name of Richmond it is too late to change it now and even though the United States government should try to change the name of the post office it would be Richmond still. For these foolish reasons Glen Miller will stay Glen Miller.

A CHAIIM VENUE Will Be Asked by Attorneys in Richeson Case.
(National News Association) BOSTON, Nov. 16. Attorneys for Rev. Clarence V. T. Richeson, accused of the murder of Avis Linnell, are. to make a motion for a change of venue for the trial of the murder charge, it has been learned. The attorneys who are to battle for the life of the minister have decided that public feeling in Suffolk county is such that an unprejudiced jury cannot be drawn, even from a long list of talesmen. District attorney Pelletier will make a fight in opposition to the propsed change. He will declare that Suffolk county contains enough men unprejudiced in so grave a matter as the one in question, despite the publicity which has been given the case. It is expected that the motion by the defense will be made within a week. With the date of the trial set for January 15, just two months away, the lawyers tor the accused are going ahead with their plans as rapidly as possible. COLLEGE PARROT KNEW HOW TO CUSS
PITTSBURG, Nov. 16. Two hundred students of the Carnegie Technical school yesterday paid their last respects to Mike, the school's parrot. They were accompanied by a band playing funeral music. Mike, whose vocabulary consisted of "Carnegie" and an oath, both of which he used continuously, died Saturday. The bird lay in state with candles burning around the bier. The funeral was held in the school auditorium, and T. R. Critchlow of Pittsburg, delivered an oration on Mike, the school and profanity. To a grave in Schenly park, overlooking Forbes field, the bird was borne, while immediately following the funeral procession came a student carrying a placard reading. "Twenty-one dollars gone to hell," apparently referring to th cost of the bird.
