JOAQUIN MILLER IS 70 YEARSOLD TODAY Noted Poet of S ierras Quietly Celebrated His Birthday Anniversary. OAKLAND, Cal., Nov. 10. ReceivIng congratulations from distinguished friends in this country, and also from abroad, Joaquin Miller, the "Poet of the Sierras," quietly celebrated his seventieth birthday anniversary today. Notwithstanding his advanced years the poet is still enjoying good health and Is mentally fresh and full of energy. Cinclnnatus Heine Miller was the name which the poet received in baptism shortly after the day of his birth, November 10, 1841, and under this name was he known before he assumed the pen-name of "Joaquin" Miller at the beginning of his literary career. In the three-score and ten years of his life Miller has crowded a greater number of adventures and experiences than half a dozen average men of the same age could master in the aggregate. He was born from Scotch-American parents in the Wabash district of Indiana and was scarcely ten years oiu when his father emigrated to Oregon, then a wild and sparsely settled country. He received but little education, but became thoroughly acquainted with everything pertaining to woodcraft and the adventurous life of the trappers, hunters and prospectors in that region. He was only thirteen years old when he left home to try his fortunes in California. For seven years he aimlessly roammi through the wilds of Northern California and Southern Oregon, sharing the life and dangers of gold-diggers, lumbermen and trappers and finally casting his lot with a tribe of Indians, becoming a "Squaw-man" and losing caste with the white men altogether by this step. He was treated with contempt, like all "squaw-men" and retaliated by leading the Indians in their attacks upon the white settlers. After seven years of this life young Miller returned to his home in Oregon

and began to study law in the office

of George H. Williams at Eugene, Ore gon, who afterward became attorney general of the United States. The fol

lowing year Miller became express

messenger in the gold-mining districts of Idaho, which position he resigned to become the editor of a weekly newspaper in Eugene, Oregon. The paper was shortly afterwards suppressed by the authorities because of the seditious character of its editorials. It wus while he was editor of that paper that Miller became acquainted with "Minnie Myrtle," a frequent contributor of poetry to the paper. A brief courtship was followed by their marriage and two children were the result of that union. Their married life was not happy, however. His wife oon separated from Miller and took the youngest child, a boy, with her, while the daughter, Maud Miller, in later years well known as an actress, remained with her father. In 18G3 Miller opened a law office In Canon City, Oregon. While living in that young and struggling town he distinguished himself by leading an expedition against the hostile Indians, who had attacked the settlement. In 1866 Miller was made county judge of Grant county, which post he held until 1870. His literary activity began about 1864 or 1865. He began to write poems, dealing mostly with the adventurous life of the West and published first a collection of poems in paper covers, callen "Specimens" and next a volume with the title "Joaquin t at," wrich contained a defense of Joaquin Murietta, the famous Spanish-American outlaw, who had been the terror of California for ten years. From this Miller took his pen name "Joaqulri" under which he published all his subsequent works. In 1870 Miller went to London,

"The Girl From U. S. A." In "The Girl From the U. S. A." the theatergoers is treated to a story of intrigue and crime, of love and revenge that grips with a tenacity by no means is allowed to dominate; it is dispelled by racy comedy and healthy action and the denounment brings happiness to the wronged and punishment to the wrongdoer. This musical comedy drama will be presented by an excellent company of singers and actors at the Gennett Theater, Monday night, November 13th.

"Russian Orchestra." M. W. W. Ondreeff, "foster father of the balalaika" has made the present instrument as superior to the peasant prototype as the cornet is to the fish horn. He is himself a composer of renown. Yet he has left untouched the native Russian melodies he has chosen for the orchestra's program. The muscovite melodies M. Andreoff retains In their pure original state. So ingratiating, however, are the native tunes, as rendered by the orchestra that one understands at once howgreat composers, German as well as Russian, made the indigenous melodies of the Czar's realm the basis of much of their work. The Russian grand opera stars who will sing with the Balalaika Orchestra when it comes include in their program a number of the Russian folk songs, as well as selections from all the popular Russian operas.

At The Murray. The offering at the Murray vaudeville theater is one of the very best of the season, and the patrons have been showing their appreciation by filling the house at every performance so far on the week. The Meade, Trow, Trio Novelty ring artists and gymnasts open the show. The Trio work for the most part on a trapeze, work fast, has nothing that has ever been done here before in their routine and accomplish everything with a finish that can not be denied. The strength of the smallest of the trio is something phenomenal and the closing of their act is a clever exhibition of what may be attained by diligent effort. It scarcely does Pauline Corbett full justice to say her singing gives her high rank in her line. The pure soprano voice that charms so well "Come Back To Erin" "Killarney," and other Irish ballads is delightfully fresh and piquant in such modern songs as the "Love Bug." Along with vocal fitness goes exceptional charm of manner and person. Marie Yuill, or Bobby Boyd, the gay and giddy duo have one of the liveliest and neatest singing, dancing and talking act seen at the Murray this year. Mr. Boyd is an excellent dancer and Miss Yuill as petite and vivacious as any one could wish. August Neville and Company in their political playlet by Oliveh White entitled "Politics and Petticoats" is one of the very few who have been

able to make good with a Richmond audience. The playlet is one of intense interest and Mr. Neville, who is a dramatic man of great ability has been most fortunate in surrounding himself with such able support as Mme. Mureal and William J. Marble, Jr.

Hardicapped His Humor. The staff humorist approached the editor with a lugubrious face and his resignation. "Why, you are doing all right," said the editor. "What's the trouble?" "Well, you see, sir," replied the staff humorist, "it's this way. I got married a few weeks ago, and now if I print a joke about wives my wife thinks I mean her, and If I mention a mother-in-law her mother comes around and raises the roof. Then, too, one of my wife's brothers is a plumber, another an iceman, and the third is a coal dealer. More than that, she ha a half brother who is a book agent, and they are all big. husky fellows with ugly tempers. If you don't mind I'd like to retire from the humorous department and take a position as obituary editor." Boston Transcript.
