WET AND DRY FIGHT Delegates to Constitutional Convention from Preble at Sword Points.

(Palladium Kprciai 1CATON, O., Oct. 18. Aside from the interest attaching to the wet and dry fight in the race leading to the

election of a delegate to represent Preble county in the coming constitutional convention, a feature of the campaign will be the ilivision and fight among the dry forces. Frank Blackford, of Kldorado, who asserts that he was the first man in the race to openly declare himself in favor of the dry cause, lias been angered because of an attempt of three local ardent dry supporters to centralize the vote upon Henry K. Eby. Circulars sent out from this city by this committee, whom Illackford charges as unauthorized, are addressed to "Our Dear Co-Worker," and ask that Eby be given support. According to Blackford, a meeting of the county anti-saloon league was held September 23 In Eaton for the purpose of uniting on a candidate, but nothing was donewith the matter, because of a lack of 'attendance, and the meeting was adjourned. No other advertised meeting1 was held, and the attempt of the authors of the petition to favor Eby, he' says, excels any underhanded piece of work ever attempted by Boss George B. Cox. Statements to this effect have been made public by him, and he calls upon his friends to rally in his support. That there will be a division-of the dry forces is generally believed. Blackford has always been dry, and it was believed that he would, receive the endorsement of the anti-saloon league. He is known all over the county, and has a large coat indent of followers on the dry side who will cast their support to . him in preference to Eby. It is also currently talked that the chances of Attorney Roscoe Griffis, the only wet candidate in the race, will be helped I by the division, of the league vvote.

CharlesJone8, carpenter, employed by Becker Bros., a few days ago fell from a buirtding at the home of R. C. Prugh, southeast of Eaton, and sustained a brcUien right arm at the el

bow. A few months ago Jones suffered a fall in which he received a broken hip. Mrs. lola Wilkins, a former resident of Eaton, but who has been living in Richmond with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Sliver, escaped from the Home of the Friendless a few days ago but was later arrested while intoxicated, a violation for which she had been sent to that institution. After she will have served the remaining twenty days she will again be arraigned. While a resident of Dayton the woman was arrested several times on the same charge, it is said. Infirm and destitute, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Schaffer, aged respectively 81 and 70, have been taken from their home, east of Katon, near Banta's Fork, to the county infirmary. The pitiable condition of the couple was found by Sheriff William S. Boner on investigation into the case against their son, Jesse Shaffer, who was taken to the state reformatory at Mansfield Monday to serve a term for chicken stealing. Neither of the old couple had been outside their home for about a year. Contractor A. L. Armstrong, of this city, has the contract for the cement work on the $10,000 barn to be built in Jackson township by I'ottis A. Iteid of Richmond. The carpenter work has been awarded Becker Bros., of this city. A large number of members of the local lodge will go to West Alexandria Tuesday evening to witness the conferring of the I'age rank upon a class of six candidate's by Royal lodge K. of P., of that place.

REPORT JFJCHOOLS Shows a Steady Increase in Attendance. f

A decided increase in attendance is the chief feature of the report for the first month of the present public sch'ool year. This report has just been issued by Superintendent T. A. Mott, and shows that the public schools of this city are in the best condition now that they ever have been. Very few pbscences and cases of tardiness have been noted, and practically no truancies are on record. The campaign which many of the teachers planned to raise the standard of scholarship is working out well, and the principals of the several schools state that the work done in the class room is well ahead of past years in thoroughness and excellence. One of the pleasing features of the increase in attendance this year is that

the growth is regular, and not spas-;

modic, showing the stability of the en

tire community. The figures for the last ten years bear this out, as every ; year has marked a slight increase in! the figures. The total attendance in all ; the schools of the city for the first ; month was 3307. The count for the last ten years follows: 1902, 2S39; 1903. 2855; 1904, 2862; 1905, 2947; 1906, 29S6; 1907, 2991; 1908. 2992; 1909 3151; 1916, 3252; 1911, 3307.
