HENRY L. MYERS. Henry L. Myers, the successor of the late Thomas H. Carter as United States senator from Montana, was born In Booneville, Mo., October 9, 1862, and was educated in the public schools of his native town. He worked on his father's farm, taught school, became a newspaper man and finally a lawyer. He was admitted to practice In the supreme court of Missouri at the age of 23 and practiced for some time at Booneville and West Plains. In 1893 he went to Montana and opened a law office in the town of Hamilton. He was elected county attorney in Bavilll County in 1894 and re-elected two years later. In 1898 he was elected State senator on the Democratic ticket. In the senate Mr. Myers confined his attention largely to measures aiming at the reform of judicial procedure. After his retirement from the senate he was elected a district judge. His election to the United States senate last spring was something of a surprise as he was in no sense an active candidate for the honor.

American Goods In Germany The American Association of Commerce and Trade in Berlin, Germany, Is sending out circulars which will be of interest to American Manufacturers seeking business in Germany. The circular is entitled "Did You Ever" and asks a number of questions as follows: Did you ever try to sell your goods in Germany? "Did you ever hear that Germany has a population of 60,000,000? "Did you ever realize that these 60,000,000 of people are great buyers? "Did you know that some of the biggest American firms are doing a rattling good business in Germany? ''Did you ever stop to think that labor-saving machinery is eagerly bought in Germany? "Did you ever hear that American machinery has revolutionized several branches of German manufacture? Did you ever know that the Germans are like the Athenians of old always looking for something new? "Did you ever try to exploit the German market? Did you ever know that the Germans are larger buyers of American machinery and American mad e goods than all other Europeans? Did you ever hear of the American asociation of Commerce and Trade, Berlin? "Did you ever hear that this association was organized primarily for the promotion of American trade wit Germany. "Did you ever hear how the American Association of Commerce and Trade has assisted American business men? "Did you ever consider it would be wise and in your interest to ask the American Association of Commerce and Trade to help you? Did you ever consider the advisability of becoming a member of the American Trade Association of Commerce and Trade? "Did you ever ask the assistance of this association to help you enter the German market?" In conclusion the circular says, "if you have not done this do so at once." The questions asked may be applied to other countries and the sug gestions may also be used in connection with all foreign business.
Citizenship Organization "In proportion as the structure of a government gives .force to public opinion it is essential that public opinion should be enlightened." This sentence written by George Washington is carried at the top of stationery used by the Washington Neighborhood Civic Club of Madison, Wis. And on that stationery there has been outlined the program and the purpose of a meeting to be held in Madison, October 25 to 28, for the develpoment of a people's machine of enlightenment a light and power plant for running the government. This dynamo is to be placed in the schoolhouses of America, using the schools as social and civic centers. The wider use of the schools is to get the people to know one another and to know what affects them all and to put their social and civic consciousness in good working order. A foremost man of the United States. Governor Woodrow Wilson, of New Jersey, is to start this social conference with an address entitled, "The Need of Citizenship Organization." President Van Hise of Wisconsin University once said to a reporter for The Star that the aim of that commonwealth school was to get information out of all the people. Now, that is the purpose of the school center movement for the schools are the people's properties conveniently situated for the people to get together for information for information on how to have good times, how to act together for right things, on what are right things for information, in short, on the general facts of living. Let the people break the barriers of simply isolated lives. Let them know how both halves live. Let them be aroused to what the city, the state and the Nation mean to them. Then they will be happier. Then they will vote not only for constables and presidents, but for things. An organized citizenship in that best sense outside the political machine organizations will be so efficient that the democracy can do anything. It can run railroads and street railroads or make others run them fairly. It can put poverty in limbo. It can make a country which is capable of feeding a billion people actually feed all of 90 million people something which has not been done yet. "Citizenship organization." It is the great ideal of the Twentieth Century. Whatever will help it should have the support of every citizen whose conception of individual welfare is not that to be propserous others must be poor, that to be enlightened others must be ignorant, that to be virtuous others must be vile. Kansas City Star.
TO KEEP PACE WITH GRAIN CONSUMPTION
(National News Association) OMAHA, Neb., Oct. 9. How the grain production of the United States can be made to keep pace with consumption is one of the big questions to be discussed by the members of the Grain Dealers' National association who assembled in Omaha today for their fifteenth annual convention. The attendance includes nearly 1,000 elevator owners, grain brokers, commission men and receivers of grain in nearly every part of the country.

A SHIP IN A STORM. The Peril When Wind and Water Rage In Opposite Directiona. In a storm at sea, with a gale blowing in one direction and the sea running in the opposite direction, it takes a stanch ship to stand the water pressure on one side and the contrary wind pressure on the other. Stability is one of the greatest problems to the constructor of a steamship. Naturally the center of gravity should be low. The hull must be of such a form that when the vessel rolls to one side the center of buoyancy shall move sufficiently far to that same side for the forces of buoyance acting npward to right the vessel. A badly designed ship is liable to many dangers. If light in the stern the screw may come out of the water, race and be snapped off. If too low in the steru when running before a storm breaking waves may fall on board and so tend to swamp the vessel. A ship may be topheavy; there comes a moment when the upward force of buoyancy no longer tends to right the ship, but Instead exerts its force in pushing the ship still farther out of perpendicular, with tbe result that she capsizes. BANKER MORSE MAKES FIGHT FOR FREEDOM
THE WklOriG WAY "I want to do more for my children than was done for me." I knew the history of the man who made that remark. He was tumbled out into the world to earn his living at an early age and had succeeded by deserving success. Like many other such fathers, be wanted to save his children from tbe hardships he bad known. I knew his children. There was the boy, yet in his teens, but already a young snob. He was dressed like a swell patent leather pumps, silk stockings, gold watch fob. pearl stickpin, etc. It was plain to see from the way he turned up his nose at poorly dressed boys that bis measure of life was the cut glass, Persian rug standard. And the girl: At an age when she should have been playing with her dolls her mind was occupied with dress. She was loaded with jewelry, wore false hair and painted her lips, if not her cheeks. She swayed in her extremely short dresses, and it was pitiful to see how she struiguteued herself ia order to pose like a fashionable woman. In trying to "do more" for his children the father did not see that Because he had gone up against the hard knocks his struggles had developed his powers. His children, being reared by hothouse methods, were weaklings. There were no luxuries for him in early life, and self denial had put fiber into his character. His children were flabby and lacking because of luxury. He never indulged his appetites as a boy, and contineueo had made a man of him. He was pampering tbe appetites of bis children to the full. Do you seeHow much better for these mere kids would be the plain dress and plain fare and the experience of discipline than the fine dress and the overindulgence? There is a way to "do more" for your children than was done for you. It is not the way of filling their pam pered stomachs with rich food and their weak bends with silly notions. It is the way of education, of obedience, of thrift, of discipline. Beware lest in trying to "do more' for your child you succeed in doing less. An Insinuation. Scribbleg I say. old man. the firs; edition of my liook is exhausted. Dribbles Well. I trust your friends appreciate yonr generosity. Chieag? Nowa.

(National News Association) ATLANTA, Ga., Oct. 9. The case of Charles W. Morse, the New York financier, serving a fifteen-year sentence in the Federal penitentiary here, came up again today before the United States circuit court of appeals in this city. In the present proceeding it is contended that Morse should have been sentenced on but one count of his indictment and that he should have been sent to a New York jail instead of to the penitentiary, where hard work is required. Federal Judge Newman ruled adversely on this contention some time ago, but an appeal was taken.
AMBASSADOR BRYCE LAYS CORNERSTONE
SOOTHED THE SPIRITS. A Preliminary to House Building Ir the Shan States. House building in tbe Shan States is not such an easy matter as it looks. Mrs. Leslie Milne, author of "Sbans a; Home" tells how she arranged for the building of a bamboo house at Namkham, and, though the materials ar rived, no progress seemed to be made with the actual construction: "When I first spoke of bouse build ing I had been asked what to me peeined an irrelevant question namely, the day of the week on which I was born. When I answered that it was late on Saturday night or early on Sunday morning I did not know that my reply was of importance. As time went on and the bamboos lay un touched, looking like long green snake? in the grass, I complained of the delay only to be told that until I could tell them my birthday they were afraid to begin work, as the spirits would be angry if the offerings for the propc: day were not uiadc "I suggested that the building shoul l begin. I braving the anger of the spir its, but they thought the work toe dangerous, as the risk was uot only for me, but for the workmen as well On consulting a wise man a way was found out of the difficulty. He decreed that an extra large offering to content the spirits of both Saturday and Sunday should be made. This was done, and tbe building commenced
next day."
(National News Association) HINGHAM. Mass., Oct 9. Ambassador Bryce today made the presentation of the old "Mounting Stone," which Old Higham, in England, has sent as a gift to this town. SINGING SANDS.
Peculiar Propertiea of Theae Curious Freaks of Nature. The most notable of those curious freaks of nature, "singing sands," are those of the Hawaiian island of Kauai. When a small quantity of this sand is clapped between the hands it is said to give forth a sound so shrill as actually to resemble a boot. Put into a bag and violently shaken, tbe sand emits a
noise strangely like tbe bark of a dog.
Similar sands also occur in tbe Colo
rado desert, where also are to be found
those curious nonsedentary sands that
continually travel hither and thither over the vast plain of clay. Their
movements are Induced by the winds.
nnd when a strong breeze is blowing
the particles of which they are composed give out an audible humming or singing. Under tbe microscope these Bands show an almost perfectly spherical
form, so that they roll upon each other at the slightest impulse, a circum-
1 stance that also accounts for the rapid'
ity with which the sands travel over the desert. One theory advanced with respect to the "singing" of these sands is that it is due to an exceedingly thin
film of gas that covers the grains.
Gathered and removed from the desert the sands loe their vocal properties.
